Analiza środowiskowych uwarunkowań lokalizacji osadnictwa ze starszej i środkowej epoki kamienia na Pojezierzu Lubuskim. Zastosowanie drzew klasyfikacyjno-regresyjnych
The article presents results of the study of environmental variables influencing location of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic settlement in Pojezierze Lubuskie. A new method of predicting archaeological sites location has been suggested, based on classification and regression trees (CART), including nine natural variables. A detailed model has been designed illustrating dependency between these natural variables and intensity of prehistoric activity. The study, results have been also presented on the map, which systematisies and presents, in a coherent manner, a model of human presence in Palaeolithic and esolithic periods
Początki kultury pucharów lejkowatych na Niżu Polskim
In the article, the author discusses and accepts the need to rejuvenate the chronology of the beginnings of the Funnel Beaker culture in the Polish Plain which should be then dated to about 4200/4100 years BC. While accepting such an approach, the author presents also some of its consequences – e.g. multi-stylistic of pottery and variability of environments inhabited by the earliest Funnel Beaker communities. The article also presents some suggestions concerning the participation of huntergatherers and early agrarian groups in the shaping of this culture in the Polish lowlands. It also raises some questions, which, under the new chronological circumstances, await further archaeometric data and proper discussion
Przyczynek do badań nad krzemieniarstwem grupy łupawskiej KPL
Discussion in the article concentrates mainly on the relationship between flint working of the communities of the Łupawa group and populations representing the Funnel Beaker culture in Kujawy. Such a comparisons became possible with the discoveries at Wilkostowo 23/24 site, com. Aleksandrów Kujawski
Z badań nad neolityzacją polski środkowej. Pozostałości osadnictwa kultury pucharów lejkowatych ze stanowiska Polesie 1, gm. Łyszkowice
The article presents the results of the study of the Funnel Beaker culture settlement at site Polesie 1, com. Łyszkowice. There have been recognised very damaged remnants of a settlement and campsites of Neolithic communities. The author of the study links them to the process of colonisation, which had started in Kujawy or eastern Wielkopolska
Funkcja krążków glinianych ludności kultury łużyckiej w świetle nowych znalezisk z Wielkopolski
Although the collection of “Lusatian” clay discs is quite significant, not much attention has been paid so far to their interpretation. The discs might have been used for various purposes in “Lusatian” society, e.g. as toys for children, or the Sun cult objects. They might have also played strictly utilitarian role of spindle whorls, polishing stones in pottery workshops, or miniature pads used in casting process. It would be difficult to accept any of the hypotheses exclusively, as it seems that the discs might have had various functions depending, among others, on the socio economic context in which they appeared
Znalezisko serii wiórów ze stanowiska 9 w Dąbrówce, gm. Kowal
Archaeological excavations carried out by Patrimonium Foundation at site Dąbrówka 9, com. Kowal, in 2009 provided a unique assemblage of a series of blades made on so-called chocolate flint. Refitting of blades permitted reconstruction of core reduction stages. However, there the question arises of what was the origin of the find – a purpose for which the artefacts were brought to and finally deposited at the site. The blades were produced outside the site Dąbrówka 9 and they are represented either by very even regular ones – “select”, as well as debitage of the core reduction. Use-wear analysis, however, proved that each artefact had been at least sporadically used
Wybrane aspekty społecznego funkcjonowania wytworów wiedzy archeologicznej i archeologii we współczesnej Polsce
In the article an attempt has been made to conceptualise the presence and range of the functioning of the products of archaeological knowledge, indirectly also archaeology, in social space in modern Poland, in the context of broader transformations of modern man’s attitude towards the past. The ambition of the author has been to formulate certain regularities, observable in the processes of making prehistoric past present in modern times and to formulate specific developmental trends in this respect. The article describes the basic strategies of manifesting archaeological past, and shaping their trends, namely sensational attitude towards archaeological discoveries, reconstructionism, dramatisation of the past and its festivalisation. It also discusses the characteristic elements of the aforementioned trends, which create the specifics of the modern man’s approach towards the past, including the prehistoric past
Ceramika z ornamentem pasmowo-grzebykowym z osady kultury pucharów lejkowatych w Poganicach, pow. słupski, stan. 4. Przyczynek do studiów nad kierunkami kontaktów interregionalnych ludności grupy łupawskiej
During the excavations within the settlement of the Funnel Beaker culture in Poganice, Słupsk county, carried out in the 1970s, two fragments of vessels decorated with band and comb ornament were discovered. This discovery appears to be one of the north-westernmost appearances of such a type of pottery, very common in Chełmno land, and considered to be one of the indicators of the Mątwy group of the Funnel Beaker culture. Their presence at the site of the Łupawa group of the Funnel Beaker culture permits to follow the ways the pottery got into the Łupawa River basin. It might have been via the route along the left side edge of the lower Vistula valley, and further on along the courses of the Wierzyca and Słupia Rivers into Central Pomerania
Piece wapiennicze z południowo-zachodniej strefy osadnictwa kultury wielbarskiej w fazie lubowidzkiej na tle porównawczym – przegląd źródeł
This article is intended to complement the present state of knowledge on the lime production conducted in the area covered by the settlement of the Wielbark culture in the earlier stage of its development. The article includes a review of available evidence of such a production, reflected within a settlement by the presence of a lime kilns. The article focuses mainly on the presence of such features in the south-western area occupied by the Wielbark communities
Possibilities and limitations of research methods of the social structure in the Roman Iron Age in Poland
The question of structure of prehistoric communities constitutes an interesting, yet challenging research problem. Most often it is analyzed from the perspective of the equipment of individuals buried it cemeteries. Researchers dealing with the Roman period, largely base their studies on the qualitative and quantitative diversity of funerary material, assume that the richly furnished graves belonged to rich people (elites), and poorly equipped – respectively – to the poor. They take into account the present value of materials of which objects were made (gold, silver), even though they may not have been as significant as they are today. A major problem in the study of social structure turns out to be the poorly preserved bone material which often prevents anthropologists from determining sex and age of the deceased. The solution could be found in the study of fossil DNA, able to answer questions about the possible existence of kinship and family sectors in the cemeteries. What is more, the study of stable isotopes of oxygen, nitrogen and carbon, although not without limitations, can support archeology in finding answers to questions if diet could be related to social status (or dependent on sex, age, wealth, etc.). Finally, in the study of social structure, the research on divisions arising from labor and its distribution according to sex is also used. In the studies of social structure it is crucial to realize that burial is an intentional action, which is influenced by the aspirations of family members of the deceased, grief, emotions related to death, and even current “fashion”. Therefore, asking questions about the social structure and using methods which are to help obtain the answers, what we really ask about is the attitude of the living towards the deceased and death itself, as well as their own idea of the afterlife
