Interview Excerpt of Mr. E.B. Campbell
(1900-1990) Elisha Bowen Campbell was a teacher and Alabama State University’s long term Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. “E. B.”, the name he preferred, was the son of Wallace and Ida Campbell of Bullard County, Alabama. According to the 1920 U.S. Census, the family resided in Mt. Meigs, Montgomery County, Alabama.
E. B. attended what is now Alabama State University, where he distinguished himself in sports, especially football. According to the 1928 yearbook, he was noted also as the “Biggest Bull Shooter” and the “Biggest Flirt.” While attending the school, he worked on campus as a carpenter and a dining room cook. In June of 1931, he earned a Bachelor’s Degree. The next year, the college employed him full-time in operations and maintenance. By 1974, Campbell had worked there forty two years, mostly as the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds. He married Montgomery native Albertine Moore in 1936 and they shared fifty-four years together
Interview Excerpt of Dr. C.J. Dunn
Coach C. J. Dunn enjoyed a forty-six-year long career at ASU where he served as the school’s first basketball coach. Between 1934 and 1963, Coach Dunn won 298 games and would go on to occupy teaching positions at ASU, as the Athletic Director, the principal of the Laboratory High School, the Dean of the Junior College, and as the Dean of Students. Dunn also served as commissioner of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1970-1972
