Blood pressure
Blood pressure is determined by measuring the relative amount of force necessary to prevent transmission of a pulse wave to the capillaries. This force is measured by 1) applying to the arm a rubber cuff which is 2) inflated with air to compress the artery until 3) the pulse cannot be felt. 4) The air pressure necessary to stop the pulse is measured by a column of mercury which indicates the blood pressure
