Evidence for Alfven eigenmodes driven by alpha particles in D-He-3 fusion experiments on JET

    No full text
Alfven eigenmodes (AEs) driven by energetic alpha particles can lead to enhanced fast ion transport and losses, thereby degrading the plasma performance in ITER and future magnetic confinement fusion reactors. Unexpectedly, AEs with negative toroidal mode numbers, which are currently not considered for ITER, were observed in dedicated experiments with fusion-born alpha particles on the tokamak Joint European Torus (JET). The paper provides evidence for a complex interplay between fast ions, monster sawtooth crashes and AEs. Our results highlight the need for an improved description of the synergies between different fast ion phenomena in future burning plasmas.SP

Mitigation of Voltage and Frequency Excursions in Low-Inertia Microgrids

    No full text
Power systems proliferated by distributed generation sources are becoming increasingly prone to frequency and voltage disturbances. These problems are exacerbated in microgrids since they have fewer intrinsic disturbance-rejecting measures and features. To increase the reliability and stability of emerging power systems, the advanced control structures of the distributed generation sources based on power electronics devices must be deployed during suboptimal operating conditions. The aggravating circumstance is that both voltage and frequency excursion can be transient and long-lasting and consequently can occur simultaneously. The algorithm proposed in this paper integrates voltage support (nominal voltage restoration) and inertia emulation features with the comprehensive current references management scheme, thus securing improved grid operating conditions during several different faults and occurrences. The control algorithm is developed and tested in the context of a small microgrid, but it can be applied with minimal alterations in traditional grids, also. To prove that it is possible to decrease simultaneously voltage unbalances and frequency deviations, a test microgrid consisting of a synchronous generator, photovoltaic system, battery storage system, and controllable balanced and unbalanced loads was developed in a hardware-in-the-loop environment.PE

How quickly do cloud droplets form on atmospheric particles?

    No full text
The influence of aerosols on cloud properties is an important modulator of the climate system. Traditional Köhler theory predicts the equilibrium concentration of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN); however, it is not known to what extent particles exist in the atmosphere that may be prevented from acting as CCN by kinetic limitations. We measured the rate of cloud droplet formation on atmospheric particles sampled at four sites across the United States during the summer of 2006: Great Smoky Mountain National Park, TN; Bondville, IL; Houston, TX; and the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program Southern Great Plains site near Lamont, OK. We express droplet growth rates with the mass accommodation coefficient (α), and report values of a measured in the field normalized to the mean a measured for lab-generated ammonium sulfate (AS) particles (i.e., α′=α/αAS)- Overall, 59% of ambient CCN grew at a rate similar to AS. We report the fraction of CCN that were "low-α′" (α′<10-1, corresponding to α<1.5×10-2). Of the 16 days during which these measurements were made, 8 had relatively few low-α′ CCN (<16%), 6 had moderate low-α′ fractions (27% to 59%), and 2 had large low-α′ fractions (> 82% during at least one ∼30 min period). Day to day variability was greatest in Tennessee and Illinois, and low-α′ particles were most prevalent on days when back trajectories suggested that air was arriving from aloft. The highest fractions of low-α′ CCN in Houston and Illinois occurred around local noon, and decreased later in the day. These results suggest that for some air masses, accurate quantification of CCN concentrations may need to account for kinetic limitations.LAP

Towards mouse genetic-specific RNA-sequencing read mapping

    No full text
Genetic variations affect behavior and cause disease but understanding how these variants drive complex traits is still an open question. A common approach is to link the genetic variants to intermediate molecular phenotypes such as the transcriptome using RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq). Paradoxically, these variants between the samples are usually ignored at the beginning of RNA-seq analyses of many model organisms. This can skew the transcriptome estimates that are used later for downstream analyses, such as expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) detection. Here, we assessed the impact of reference-based analysis on the transcriptome and eQTLs in a widely-used mouse genetic population: the BXD panel of recombinant inbred lines. We highlight existing reference bias in the transcriptome data analysis and propose practical solutions which combine available genetic variants, genotypes, and genome reference sequence. The use of custom BXD line references improved downstream analysis compared to classical genome reference. These insights would likely benefit genetic studies with a transcriptomic component and demonstrate that genome references need to be reassessed and improved.BIC
