You Are Known by How You Vlog: Personality Impressions and Nonverbal Behavior in YouTube
An increasing interest in understanding human perception in social media has led to the study of the processes of personality self-presentation and impression formation based on user profiles and text blogs. However, despite the popularity of online video, we do not know of any attempt to study personality impressions that go beyond the use of text and still photos. In this paper, we analyze one facet of YouTube as a repository of brief behavioral slices in the form of personal conversational vlogs, which are a unique medium for selfpresentation and interpersonal perception. We investigate the use of nonverbal cues as descriptors of vloggers’ behavior and find significant associations between automatically extracted nonverbal cues for several personality judgments. As one notable result, audio and visual cues together can be used to predict 34% of the variance of the Extraversion trait of the Big Five model. In addition, we explore the associations between vloggers’ personality scores and the level of social attention that their videos received in YouTube. Reconfigurable radiofrequency filters based on versatile soliton microcombs
The rapidly maturing integrated Kerr microcombs show significant potential for microwave photonics. Yet, state-of-the-art microcomb-based radiofrequency filters have required programmable pulse shapers, which inevitably increase the system cost, footprint, and complexity. Here, by leveraging the smooth spectral envelope of single solitons, we demonstrate microcomb-based radiofrequency filters free from any additional pulse shaping. More importantly, we achieve all-optical reconfiguration of the radiofrequency filters by exploiting the intrinsically rich soliton configurations. Specifically, we harness the perfect soliton crystals to multiply the comb spacing thereby dividing the filter passband frequencies. Also, the versatile spectral interference patterns of two solitons enable wide reconfigurability of filter passband frequencies, according to their relative azimuthal angles within the round-trip. The proposed schemes demand neither an interferometric setup nor another pulse shaper for filter reconfiguration, providing a simplified synthesis of widely reconfigurable microcomb-based radiofrequency filters. For microcomb-based radiofrequency filters pulse shapers are required, which increase the system cost, footprint, and complexity. Response of irradiated nuclear fuel rods to quasi-static and dynamic loads
This paper presents the methodology applied for the experimental and numerical investigation of the mechanical response of spent nuclear fuel rods under static and dynamic loads. The experimental activities were conducted at the JRC Karlsruhe where a 3-point bending test device and an impact tower have been developed and commissioned at the hot-cell facilities. Results are provided for two PWR samples. Load-displacement curves describe the mechanical response of the sample in the 3point bending tests, whereas an image analysis methodology has been developed to comprehend the sample's behaviour under dynamic loads (recorded using a high-speed camera). Finite Element Analysis (FEA) are used to simulate the rod's response based on static and transient structural models in ANSYS Mechanical.LR
The Jones-Ray Effect Reinterpreted: Surface Tension Minima of Low Ionic Strength Electrolyte Solutions are caused by Electric Field Induced Water-Water Correlations
The surface tension of electrolyte solutions exhibits a minimum at millimolar electrolyte concentrations and then rises with increasing concentration. This minimum, known as the Jones-Ray effect, has been hotly debated over the past 80 years. If not considered as an artifact, it is typically ascribed to a phenomenological rare binding site for ions or ion pairs. Here, we propose an alternative underlying mechanism, namely that the hydrogen bond network of water responds to the collective electrostatic field of ions by increasing its orientational order, supported by recent surface tension measurements of NaCl solutions in H2O and D2O, and second harmonic scattering experiments in combination with ion resonant second harmonic reflection experiments. Recent thermodynamic and purely electrostatic treatments of the surface tension provide support for this interpretation. Network-Calculus Service Curves of the Interleaved Regulator
The interleaved regulator (implemented by IEEE TSN Asynchronous Traffic Shaping) is used in time-sensitive networks for reshaping the flows with per-flow contracts. When applied to an aggregate of flows that come from a FIFO system, an interleaved regulator that reshapes the flows with their initial contracts does not increase the worst-case delay of the aggregate. This shaping-for-free property supports the computation of end-to-end latency bounds and the validation of the network's timing requirements. A common method to establish the properties of a network element is to obtain a network-calculus service-curve model. The existence of such a model for the interleaved regulator remains an open question. If a service-curve model were found for the interleaved regulator, then the analysis of this mechanism would no longer be limited to the situations where the shaping-for-free holds, which would widen its use in time-sensitive networks. In this paper, we investigate if network-calculus service curves can capture the behavior of the interleaved regulator. We find that an interleaved regulator placed outside of the shaping-for-free requirements (after a non-FIFO system) can yield unbounded latencies. Consequently, we prove that no network-calculus service curve exists to explain the interleaved regulator's behavior. It is still possible to find non-trivial service curves for the interleaved regulator. However, their long-term rate cannot be large enough to provide any guarantee (specifically, we prove that for the regulators that process at least four flows with the same contract, the long-term rate of any service curve is upper bounded by three times the rate of the per-flow contract).PH-I
Thermodynamics of Saturated and Unsaturated Soils.
An understanding of the behaviour of saturated/unsaturated soils is important for the design and analysis of geostructures. In this paper a continuum approach based on a structured thermodynamic theory of mixtures developed by Svendsen & Hutter (1995), in which the constituent volume densities play the role of internal variables, is applied to the formulation of field equations for saturated/unsaturated compressible/incompressible soils. Emphasis is on the presentation of differences in the formulation and the roles of thermodynamics. It is seen that this approach does specialize to conventional mass and momentum balances as well as constitutive relations in saturated and unsaturated deformable porous media. With this result it is shown how some of well-known coupled theoretical formulations describing the deformation of soils are thermodynamically consistent. For example, we establish a thermodynamic basis for effective stress in saturated and unsaturated soils and delineate the applicability of Terzaghi’s effective stress concept.LM

Network state estimation and prediction for real-time transportation management applications
Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) have the potential to contribute to the solution of the traffic congestion problem. DynaMIT is a real-time system that can be used to generate guidance for travelers. The main principle on which DynaMIT is based is that information should be consistent, and user optimal. Consistency implies that the traffic conditions experienced by the travelers are consistent with the condition assumed in generating the guidance. To generate consistent user optimal information, DynaMIT performs two main functions: state estimation and prediction. A demand simulator and a supply simulator interact to perform these tasks.
