    Quantifying the effects of rainfall temporal variability on landscape evolution processes

    Rainfall characteristics such as intensity, duration, and frequency are key determinants of the hydro-geomorphological response of a catchment. The presence of non-linear and threshold effects makes the relationship between rainfall variability and geomorphological dynamics difficult to quantify. This is particularly relevant under predicted exacerbated erosion induced by an intensification of hydroclimatic extremes. In this study, we quantify the effects of changes in rainfall temporal variability on catchment morphology and sediment erosion, transport, and deposition across a broad spectrum of grain size distributions and climatic conditions. To this purpose, multiple rainfall realizations are simulated using a numerical rainfall generator, while geomorphic response and soil erosion dynamics are assessed through a landscape evolution model (CAESAR-Lisflood). Virtual catchments are used for the numerical experiments and simulations are conducted over centennial time scales. Simulation results show that higher rainfall temporal variability increases net sediment discharge, domain erosion and deposition volumes, and secondary channel development. Particularly, dry regions respond more actively to rainfall variations and finer grain size configurations amplify the hydro-geomorphological response. We find that changes in erosion rates due to rainfall variations can be expressed as a power-law function of the ratio of rainfall temporal variabilities (quantified here through the Gini index). Results are further supported by long-term observational data and simulations over real catchments. Such quantification of the effects of predicted changes in rainfall patterns on catchment hydro-geomorphic response, as mediated by local soil properties, is crucial to forecasting modifications in sediment dynamics due to climate change.CHANG

    Geodesic Active Fields on the Sphere

    In this paper, we propose a novel method to register images defined on spherical meshes. Instances of such spherical images include inflated cortical feature maps in brain medical imaging or images from omnidirectional cameras. We apply the Geodesic Active Fields (GAF) framework locally at each vertex of the mesh. Therefore we define a dense deformation field, which is embedded in a higher dimensional manifold, and minimize the weighted Polyakov energy. While the Polyakov energy itself measures the hyperarea of the embedded deformation field, its weighting allows to account for the quality of the current image alignment. Iteratively minimizing the energy drives the deformation field towards a smooth solution of the registration problem. Although the proposed approach does not necessarily outperform state-of-the-art methods that are tightly tailored to specific applications, it is of methodological interest due to its high degree of flexibility and versatility.LTS

    We show atomically resolved scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images of charge density waves (CDWs) at room temperature together with angle-resolved photoelectron band-mapping of 1T-TaSe2. By comparing the results of these two techniques, we demonstrate the atomic structure of the CDW-features observed by the STM and atomic origin of the reconstructed band-structure in this material.     Quantitative Analysis of the Key Factors Driving Cybersecurity Awareness Among Information Systems Users

    Cybersecurity threats are increasingly complex and widespread, posing significant risks to individuals and organizations. However, many studies tend to address the technological or behavioral aspects separately. The study uses a survey-based quantitative approach using PLS-SEM to analyze key factors that influence cybersecurity awareness, including demographics, training, psychological bias, and organizational culture. The findings suggest that several constructs-such as threat awareness, perceived risk, and education-significantly predict cybersecurity awareness and behaviour. Notably, the model yields an R² value of up to 0.703 with a strong path significance (p < 0.05), which underscores the robustness of the relationship. This study offers an integrated perspective on cybersecurity by bridging the psychological, educational, and organizational dimensions. It highlights cybersecurity awareness as a mediating construct that links upstream factors to secure user behavior-a relational structure that has not been explored in previous researc

    This study aims to analyze the performance of the Office of Social Affairs for Women\u27s Empowerment and Child Protection in Distributing Aid Aid for Persons with Disabilities. The method used in the preparation of this PPA is a qualitative method, with the variable being Performance. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, namely the sampling technique of data sources with certain considerations. The informants were the Head of Division, Head of Social Services and Rehabilitation, Staff for Social Services and Rehabilitation, PPDI (Indonesian Association of Persons with Disabilities) and Assistants for Persons with Disabilities, with this a total of 4 informants. Meanwhile, the Miles and Huberman model used in data analysis with the following steps: Data Reduction, Data Presentation, Conclusion Drawing/Verification, and Triangulation. The results of this study indicate that the performance of the Social Service for Women\u27s Empowerment and Child Protection has been going well although there are still obstacles. The obstacle in this research is the limited budget for the distribution of aids. Efforts made by the Office of Social Affairs for Women\u27s Empowerment and Child Protection are re-submitting the budget. It is recommended to increase the amount of the APBD budget, and improve the quality of the manufacture of assistive devices, as well as improve vehicle facilities for the distribution of assistive devices for persons with disabilities

    A seamless reduced basis element method for 2D Maxwell's problem: An introduction

    We present a reduced basis element method (RBEM) for the time-harmonic Maxwell's equation. The RBEM is a Reduced Basis Method (RBM) with parameters describing the geometry of the computational domain, coupled with a domain decomposition method. The basic idea is the following. First, we decompose the computational domain into a series of subdomains, each of which is deformed from some reference domain. Then, we associate with each reference domain precomputed solutions to the same governing partial differential equation, but with different choices of deformations. Finally, one seeks the approximation on a new domain as a linear combination of the corresponding precomputed solutions on each subdomain. Unlike the work on RBEM for thermal fin and fluid flow problems, we do not need a mortar type method to "glue" the various local functions. This "gluing" is done "automatically" thanks to the use of a discontinuous Galerkin method. We present the rationale for the method together with numerical results showing exponential convergence for the simulation of a metallic pipe with both ends open. © 2011 Springer.MCS

    Improving Fast Paxos: being optimistic with no overhead

    The paper addresses the cost of consensus algorithms. It has been shown that in the best case, consensus can be solved in two communication steps with f < n/2, and in one communication step with f < n/3 (f is the maximum number of faulty processes). This leads to a dilemma when choosing a consensus algorithm: greater efficiency or higher resiliency degree. Recently Lamport has proposed a solution called Fast Paxos, for partly escaping from this dilemma. The idea is to combine two types of rounds in a single consensus algorithm: fast rounds and rounds of the ordinary Paxos algorithm. In the best case, Fast Paxos solves consensus in one fast round, that is it requires only one communication step. Unfortunately, the combination induces some time overhead, and so Fast Paxos becomes more expensive than ordinary Paxos when fast rounds do not succeed. In this paper we go one step further: we show that it is possible to tentatively execute a fast round before a classical round without any time overhead if the fast round does not succeed.LSR-I
