Step-by-step: the effects of physical practice on the neural correlates of locomotion imagery revealed by fMRI
Previous studies have shown that mental imagery is a suitable tool to study the progression of the effect of practice on brain activation. Nevertheless, there is still poor knowledge of changes in brain activation patterns during the very early stages of physical practice. In this study, early and late practice stages of different kinds of locomotion (i.e., balanced and unbalanced) have been investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging during mental imagery of locomotion and stance. During the task, cardiac activity was also recorded. The cerebral network comprising supplementary motor area, basal ganglia, bilateral thalamus, and right cerebellum showed a stronger activation during the imagery of locomotion with respect to imagery of stance. The heart beat showed a significant increase in frequency during the imagery of locomotion with respect to the imagery of stance. Moreover, early stages of practice determined an increased activation in basal ganglia and thalamus with respect to late stages. In this way, it is proposed the modulation of the brain network involved in the imagery of locomotion as a function of physical practice time.BM

WaRR: A Tool for High-Fidelity Web Application Record and Replay
We introduce WaRR, a tool that records and replays with high fidelity the interaction between users and modern web applications. WaRR consists of two independent components: the WaRR Recorder and the WaRR Replayer. The WaRR Recorder is embedded in a web browser, thus having access to user actions, and provides a complete interaction trace—this confers high recording fidelity. The WaRR Replayer uses an enhanced, developer-specific web browser that enables realistic simulation of user interaction—this confers high replaying fidelity. We describe two usage scenarios for WaRR that help developers improve the dependability of web applications: testing web applications against realistic human errors and generating user experience reports. WaRR helped us discover bugs in widely-used web applications, such as Google Sites, and offers higher recording fidelity compared to current tools.DSLA
Replenishment of sediment downstream of dams: Erosion and transport processes
Large dams in Alpine valleys retain most of the sediments, especially coarse material, which is deposited in the delta of the reservoirs. The common sediment evacuation measures allow to flush only the fine sediments for example by turbidity current venting. Since the steep rivers below alpine dams are situated in coarse alluvial containing glacial material, their bed armors when the supply of bed load is interrupted. Spawning grounds for fish reproduction, which require appropriate bed forms, are consequently becoming rare. This can be mitigated by the replenishment of adequate gravel material downstream of large dam combined with artificial flood release for mobilizing these deposits. According to the revised Swiss Water Protection Act, flow and sediment transport regime have to be restored downstream of dams in the frame of river revitalization measures. Mrs. Elena Battisacco carried out for the first time, systematic physical experiments in a flume in order to study which arrangement of sediment deposits are suitable for recreating morphological variability downstream. Using innovative image processing analysis and measurement techniques, Dr. Battisacco could give new recommendations regarding the placement of the artificial gravel deposits and the required discharge to mobilize them, with the purpose that the deposits can recreate morphological bed forms when transported in the river reach downstream. Also for the first time, the influence of the hydrograph of the artificial flood on the transport mechanism of the replenishment deposits was studied systematically. With her research, Dr. Battisacco could give a new insight on the replenishment technique in general and on the erosion and transportation mechanism of artificial deposits placed in different arrangements in a river downstream of dams in particular.PL-LC
Isogeometric numerical dispersion analysis for two-dimensional elastic wave propagation
In this paper, we carry out a numerical dispersion analysis for the linear two-dimensional elastodynamics equations approximated by means of NURBS-based Isogeometric Analysis in the framework of the Galerkin method; specifically, we consider the analysis of harmonic plane waves in an isotropic and homogeneous elastic medium. We compare and discuss the errors associated with the compressional and shear wave velocities and we provide the anisotropic curves for numerical approximations obtained by considering B-spline and NURBS basis functions of different regularity, namely globally C^0- and C^{p−1}-continuous, p being the polynomial degree. We conclude our analysis by numerically simulating the seismic wave propagation in a sinusoidal shaped valley with discontinuous elastic parameters across an internal interface.CMC
