A Novel 1V, 24μW, ∑∆ Modulator Using Amplifier & Comparator Based Switched Capacitor Technique, with 10-kHz Bandwidth and 64dB SNDR

    No full text
A new technique, Amplifier and Comparator Based Switched Capacitor (ACBSC) for low voltage switched cap circuits, is presented. ACBSC combines the recently introduced CBSC (comparator based switched capacitor circuit) with an amplifier. The current sources in ACBSC experience less output voltage swing compared to the ones in CBSC. We apply ACBSC to the design of a 3rd-order sigma delta modulator in a 0.18 μm CMOS process technology, with a bandwidth of 10 kHz. Simulations show that the SDM achieves a peak SNDR of higher than 64 dB and consumes 24 μW from 1 Volt supply.ESPLA

Influence of jet aeration on pressures around a block embedded in a plunge pool bottom

    No full text
The influence of the air entrained by water jets on the dynamic pressures applied on the bottom of a plunge pool and inside underlying fissures was analyzed with systematic experiments. The large experimental facility reproduced aerated high-velocity jets up to 22.1 m/s impinging on a pool and impacting on an instrumented cubic block embedded on the bottom. Plunging and submerged jets are compared, as well as jet impingement on the center or on the side of the block. A relationship is proposed to describe the time-averaged pressures at stagnation as a function of the relative pool depth, considering pressure measurements in this position as well as recent experimental evidence on the jet centerline velocity decay. Air bubbles influence the dynamic pressures on the rock bottom by reducing jet momentum, but also by reducing the jet dissipation rates in the water pool. These two processes are opposed. The reduction of momentum, consequence of a jet with a lower apparent density, results in lower pressures, while lower jet dissipation in the pool results in higher kinetic energy of the jet impacting the bottom and higher pressures. Finally, the spectral contents show that the resonance frequencies of aerated jets are shifted as a consequence of wave celerity reduction caused by lower mean densities inside the fissures, which is an evidence of the presence of air bubbles.PL-LCH[1034]National Licence

Short-term energy use prediction of solar-assisted water heating system: Application case of combined attention-based LSTM and time-series decomposition

    No full text
With improved insulation of building envelopes and the use of low-temperature space heating systems, the share of energy use for domestic hot water (DHW) production in buildings has increased significantly, and nearly become the most energy-expensive service in modern buildings. Early prediction of the energy use for DHW is required for many advanced applications such as smart control, demand-side management, and optimal operation of electric or heat storage. However, predicting energy use of the solar-assisted water heating system is more challenging than typical DHW systems, as it is strongly affected by two stochastic phenomena, demand pattern and solar radiation. Given the increasing use of solar-assisted water heating systems, this paper aims to evaluate the potential to predict energy use in such systems using a novel machine learning approach. In this novel model, a Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) neural network is enhanced by (1) implementing the attention mechanism, a recent development in deep learning inspired by human vision to pay selective attention to the input data, and (2) decomposition of input data into sub-layers. The performance of simple LSTM neural network, Attention-based LSTM neural network (ALSTM) and Attention-based LSTM using decomposed data (ALSTM-D) are compared to a Feed-Forward neural network as a baseline model. Results show that LSTM, ALSTM and ALSTM-D models have a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 25%, 28% and 41% lower than Feed-Forward model, respectively. These results indicate the superior performance of the proposed ALSTM-D model over conventional models for solar-assisted DHW systems.IC

Dual-frame optimization for informationally complete quantum measurements

    No full text
Randomized measurement protocols such as classical shadows represent powerful resources for quantum technologies, with applications ranging from quantum state characterization and process tomography to machine learning and error mitigation. Recently, the notion of measurement dual frames, in which classical shadows are generalized to dual operators of positive operator-valued measure (POVM) effects, resurfaced in the literature. This brought attention to additional degrees of freedom in the postprocessing stage of randomized measurements that are often neglected by established techniques. In this work, we leverage dual frames to construct improved observable estimators from informationally complete measurement samples. We introduce novel classes of parametrized frame superoperators and optimization-free dual frames based on empirical frequencies, which offer advantages over their canonical counterparts while retaining computational efficiency. Remarkably, this comes at almost no quantum or classical cost, thus rendering dual frame optimization a valuable addition to the randomized measurement toolbox.THEO

Use of Orbital Shaken Disposable Bioreactors for Mammalian Cell Cultures from the Milliliter-Scale to the 1,000-Liter Scale

    No full text
Driven by the commercial success of recombinant biopharmaceuticals, there is an increasing demand for novel mammalian cell culture bioreactor systems for the rapid production of biologicals that require mammalian protein processing. Recently, orbitally shaken bioreactors at scales from 50 mL to 1,000 L have been explored for the cultivation of mammalian cells and are considered to be attractive alternatives to conventional stirred-tank bioreactors because of increased flexibility and reduced costs. Adequate oxygen transfer capacity was maintained during the scale-up, and strategies to increase further oxygen transfer rates (OTR) were explored, while maintaining favorable mixing parameters and low-stress conditions for sensitive lipid membrane-enclosed cells. Investigations from process development to the engineering properties of shaken bioreactors are underway, but the feasibility of establishing a robust, standardized, and transferable technical platform for mammalian cell culture based on orbital shaking and disposable materials has been established with further optimizations and studies ongoing.LBT

Mobile Health Applications to Promote Active and Healthy Ageing

    No full text
The European population is ageing, and there is a need for health solutions that keep older adults independent longer. With increasing access to mobile technology, such as smartphones and smartwatches, the development and use of mobile health applications is rapidly growing. To meet the societal challenge of changing demography, mobile health solutions are warranted that support older adults to stay healthy and active and that can prevent or delay functional decline. This paper reviews the literature on mobile technology, in particular wearable technology, such as smartphones, smartwatches, and wristbands, presenting new ideas on how this technology can be used to encourage an active lifestyle, and discusses the way forward in order further to advance development and practice in the field of mobile technology for active, healthy ageing.LMA
