    Fascinating Madness ASubject for Artists

    No full text
    — When it comes to madness, the boundary between what fascinates, disgusts, attracts and frightens is often tenuous. We are suspicious of the madman, this marginal, eccentric, too free, transgressive, uncontrollable being. An artist's view of madness is not exactly the same. First, he can be considered crazy himself (Messerschmidt), original (Salvador Dali), extravagant (Orlan). He can recognize his mental illness himself (Gérard Garouste) or wonder about his mental state (Anouk Grinberg, actress but also designer and embroiderer). But an artist can consider madness as an inspiring subject of study, this is the approach we have chosen for our communication. We will first see Les Monomanes by Géricault (1820). This series of insane faces from the Salpêtrière was an order that posed several problems for the portrait painter. Do they really fit into the portrait genre? The painter is not a simple illustrator, the gaze on his subject forges links with other works, artists...We will then discuss the founding and original reflection of Jean Dubuffet on art brut. This upset artist, who resumed painting at the age of forty-five, invested himself in the quest for works “ripped from reality”, those of the self-taught and more particularly of the insane. He created the Fondation d'Art brut in Lausanne in 1949, which brought to light hitherto unknown talents. Finally, we will focus on the series of photographs by Raymond Depardon at the psychiatric hospital of San Clemente in Italy (1979). These black and white shots have frozen this place that the viewer must be able to decode. With the virtuosity of a tightrope walker, the artist wishes to reveal the singularity of this world with the greatest respect for its inhabitants. He immerses himself in this place which gradually becomes too familiar and from which he must detach himself.

The research sample consisted of 100 workers, where we relied on the arithmetic mean tosee how high or low the study sample’s responses were to each of the basic study variables and thestandard deviation to find out the extent of the study sample’s responses, and we also relied on the“Pearson” correlation coefficient to know the nature of the relationship between job satisfactionand job performance, and we concluded that job performance is related to the level of jobsatisfaction and that the absence of the latter affects the job performance of workers, and thataffects productivity in general.
