Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024The "No Net Land Take by 2050" target, set by the EU, has been reshaping European urban development. The main goal of this research is to compare the processes related to net land take and soil sealing in the Portuguese metropolitan regions (AML and AMP) and to assess their situation regarding the 2050 target. During 2007-2018, the artificial land area increased by 4.9 percent in AMP and 4.6 percent in AML. Net land taken averaged 0.6 ha/day in the AMP and 0.7 ha/day in the AML. Reuse of artificial land was rarely practised, at 0.02 ha/day in the AMP and 0.03 ha/day in the AML. Given that the share of sealed artificial land in both regions was already close to 60% in 2018, thereby jeopardising urban biodiversity, to reduce net land take it is recommended that future infrastructure and housing needs be met by reusing already sealed artificial areas. disP - The Planning Review, 60:2, 66-70The years of the Covid-19 pandemic have been tough for the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP) and its community. The main catalyst of AESOP connectivity – its an- nual congress – was cancelled in 2020 and held remotely in 2021, depriving our members of the much-needed face-to-face interactions that have always contributed to the Association’s ad- vancement and growth. Now, after a slow restart in 2022 and 2023, when people hesitantly attempted to go back to normal, we can now officially say that AESOP and its activities are back on track. The larg- est event in the history of the Association took place in Paris in July, hosting over 1200 dele- gates from 55 different countries. In the wake of this great success, it may be worth summaris- ing the multiple activities of AESOP for inter- ested disP readers, in the hope that more peo- ple will attend and benefit from AESOP events in the future.publishedVersio

Analysis and evaluation of the quality of open spaces and green zones in periurban landscapes, the greengates as strategic nodes of green infrastructures : The case of the northern border area of the municipality of Fuenlabrada (Madrid, Spain) in its contact with the area called Bosque Sur and the case of the cities of the Dutch Randstad and their mediation or buffer zones

Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024The aim of this paper is, starting from the problem of peripheral landscapes produced by urban sprawl forms, to define a methodology for analysing the quality of peripheral public space in municipalities surrounded by natural spaces of environmental value, in order to evaluate their potential quality as environmental corridors, civic axes and natural gateways. To define the evaluation with proper indicators the investigation is based in the origin of the urban greenbelts and in the case study of the northern boundary of the municipality of Fuenlabrada (Madrid, Spain) with the Bosque Sur Periurban Forest Park and its comparison with Midden-Delfland, a buffer-zone belonging to the area known as Randstad Holland. Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Just under 100,000 inhabitants live in the Bassa Pianura Friulana (Lower Friulian Plain), Italy, an area spanning a complex system of artificial and natural infrastructures, located at the northernmost point of the Adriatic Sea and bordered by a vast lagoon. During the summer season, the 130-kilometre coastline hosts over 3 million tourists. At multiple scales, the hydrographic system faces increasing anthropogenic pressures and is hierarchically structured, which may not align effectively with the efficient functioning of the territory. Consequently, the area is persistently exposed to risks from unexpected climatic events, resulting in significant imbalances such as floods, droughts, and storm surges. Artificial water management networks, however, do not fully mitigate the operational challenges of the territory. This article initiates a discussion on research efforts, exploring tools, projects, and potential solutions to enhance the resilience and adaptability of artificial territories in response to transformations in both coastal and inland urban areas. The research aims to identify and highlight the conflicts between human and natural spaces, drawing on insights from Urban Political Ecology studies rather than a design-driven approach as often seen in landscape urbanism. Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Residential historic areas in China are crucial for urban fabric and cultural heritage. Given the complexity and dynamic nature of these areas, the conservation and renewal efforts demand precise spatial interpretation and effective methodological approaches. Under the hierarchical framework of typo-morphology, the network structure in discrete geometry is used to recognise the spatial pattern. Then a digital model is constructed, which calculates quantitative morphological indicators and clusters elements. This model enables real-time adjustments and feedback of the morphology and has been packaged as a software application. This study advances the scientific rigour and efficiency of the planning process and promotes it from ‘the prediction based on human experience’ to ‘the precise evaluation based on data analysis’. Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Most villages in the world are facing the test of transformation and revitalization in the process of globalization and urbanization. China's "rural revitalization" strategy has allowed rural tourism to flourish, but it has been greatly impacted by COVID-19. How to enhance resilience in response to public health events has become a topic worthy of in-depth study. Therefore, our study takes Guzhu Village in the suburbs of Shanghai, a tourist village that has overcome the epidemic and gained resilience, as the main case. Our research provides a theoretical framework for enhancing rural resilience on a global scale, aims to contribute to the revitalization and recovery of rural tourism during or after crisis events and provides an empirical approach to rural industry transformation, upgrading and sustainable development. Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024Citywalk, a popular trend on social media platforms, is transforming people’s preference for walking in cities. Despite its growing influence on street and place-making efforts, the relationship between Citywalk preference and built environment remains undisclosed, let alone their concerted efforts for informing more complex urban planning. In this research, a comprehensive evaluation system is proposed based on space analysis of built environment indicators and data of Citywalk from Xiaohongshu, to reconstruct a new urban perception model and recommend route selections for urban renewal practices. We take Shanghai’s historical area as the representative example and find the results well correspond to real pedestrian preferences in LBS data, which suggests this measurement is a potential valuable guidance for urban planning in the future. Game changer? Planning for just and sustainable urban regions, Paris, 8-12th July 2024In the 60 years since Image of the City was proposed by Lynch, it has been widely applied while also receiving various critiques and queries. However, recent developments of internet have led to new theoretical frameworks and research paradigms based on the classical Image of the City. To explore application transformation of Image of the City in urban planning over the past 20 years, this paper conducts qualitative and quantitative analyses based on 126 articles selected from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and 244 articles selected from the Web of Science (WOS). It outlines an overview of research hotspots, trends, and significant changes in the study of Image of the City within the field of urban planning. The study reveals that Kevin Lynch's foundational work has been expanded to incorporate digital and cultural dimensions into Image of the City researches. Furthermore, it highlights the adoption of "big data," "images," and other relevant data, alongside advanced technologies such as "deep learning" and "convolutional neural networks." These technologies have progressively replaced traditional cognitive mapping and questionnaire methods in the study of Image of the City. This shift not only marks a significant methodological evolution but also broadens the scope of research in capturing and analyzing the complexities of urban environments.
