    Euclid: Early Release Observations -- Unveiling the morphology of two Milky Way globular clusters out to their periphery

    International audienceAs part of the Euclid Early Release Observations (ERO) programme, we analyse deep, wide-field imaging from the VIS and NISP instruments of two Milky Way globular clusters (GCs), namely NGC 6254 (M10) and NGC 6397, to look for observational evidence of their dynamical interaction with the Milky Way. We search for such an interaction in the form of structural and morphological features in the clusters' outermost regions, which are suggestive of the development of tidal tails on scales larger than those sampled by the ERO programme. Our multi-band photometric analysis results in deep and well-behaved colour-magnitude diagrams that, in turn, enable an accurate membership selection. The surface brightness profiles built from these samples of member stars are the deepest ever obtained for these two Milky Way GCs, reaching down to 30.0\sim30.0 mag~arcsec2^{-2}, which is about 1.51.5 mag arcsec2^{-2} below the current limit. The investigation of the two-dimensional density map of NGC 6254 reveals an elongated morphology of the cluster peripheries in the direction and with the amplitude predicted by NN-body simulations of the cluster's dynamical evolution, at high statistical significance. We interpret this as strong evidence for the first detection of tidally induced morphological distortion around this cluster. The density map of NGC 6397 reveals a slightly elliptical morphology, in agreement with previous studies, which requires further investigation on larger scales to be properly interpreted. This ERO project thus demonstrates the power of Euclid in studying the outer regions of GCs at an unprecedented level of detail, thanks to the combination of large field of view, high spatial resolution, and depth enabled by the telescope. Our results highlight the future Euclid survey as the ideal data set to investigate GC tidal tails and stellar streams

    Enhancing a bimetallic temperature highly-sensitive nanosensor based on surface plasmon resonance

    International audienceIn this work we have investigated a new design of high sensitivity temperature sensor, based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) nanotechnology. The aim of this study is to detect small temperature variations by analyzing the plasmonic response of our SPR design. We have based our sensor on the bimetallic Kretschmann configuration at a wavelength of 633 nm. The main objective of our design is to measure the refractive index of the sensing medium as the sample temperature changes, in order to calculate sensitivity. A change in temperature induces a change in the local refractive index, leading to a shift in the surface plasmon resonance wavelength. The results also show a very high localization of the field intensity at the metal/detection medium interface. This new plasmonic design has the potential for biomedical thermal sensing applications

    The art and science of translucent color organic solar cells

    International audienceThe artistic and scientific perspectives of the translucent color organic solar cells (OSCs), made with the emerging narrowband nonfullerene acceptors are explored. The translucent color OSCs, comprising a Fabry–Pérot microcavity optical coupling layer, have a power conversion efficiency of >15% and a maximum transparency of >20% for the three primary colors. The performance−color relationship of the translucent color OSCs is analyzed using a combination of high-throughput optical computing and experimental optimization, allowing light with desired color to pass through, while absorbing enough light to generate electricity. Replication of Piet Mondrian’s artwork “Composition C (1920)” is demonstrated using a 10 × 10 cm2-sized translucent OSC module with a wide palette of colors and hues. The outcome of the work offers an opportunity for translucent color OSCs to function as both esthetic art and power generating windowpanes for use in our homes, offices, and even greenhouses

    Exposure to the main Organic Plastic Additives through food contamination

    International audienceThe use of organic plastic additives (OPAs) in food packaging has led to their widespread presence in various foodstuffs. These additives, including mainly flame-retardants, bisphenols, UV-stabilizers and plasticizers, are known for their potential hazards and environmental impact. This review aims to comprehensively assess the contamination of food products by OPAs and evaluate their role as vectors of exposure to hazardous chemicals. A review of recent literature was conducted, focusing on studies that report on the presence and concentrations of OPAs in different food categories, including aquatic products, beverages, cereals, dairy products, eggs, oils, fats, meat, poultry, vegetables, fruits and other food categories. The review also examines regional variations in contamination levels and identifies the pollutants. Significant contamination of foodstuffs by OPAs are highlighted, with varying concentrations reported across different regions and food types. Potential sources of contamination include food-packaging materials and environmental pollution. This review also identifies research gaps and proposes future directions to improve the study of OPAs in food, aiming to enhance the reliability and comparability of findings while supporting efforts to mitigate contamination risks

    Aluminum Nanoparticles for Photobleaching Resistance of Quantum Dots in Solution

    International audienceWe report on the optical properties of aluminum spherical nanoparticles exhibiting diameters ranging between 2 and 20 nm made by the reduction of aluminum ions in alkane solvents. In the UV-range, the extinction spectroscopy measurements unveiled well-defined surface plasmon resonances corresponding to the calculations performed using Mie theory. Furthermore, a photobleaching resistance effect appears for semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in a solution containing aluminum nanoparticles. The particles allowed for a global increase in the number of photons emitted by a factor of up to 1.75 compared to QDs alone. Our investigation led us to the conclusion that the aluminum nanoparticles initially absorb a part of the emitted light and prevent the photobleaching of the QDs. Thus, these nanoparticles have the potential to be used as elementary building blocks for making more complex aluminum nanostructures for nanophotonics and also to protect emitters from photobleaching.</div
