    Status and progress of GaN-based millimeter-wave transistors and vertical GaN-on-silicon devices at IEMN

    International audienceRecent advancements in GaN-based millimeter-wave transistors and vertical GaN-on-silicon devices are driving the evolution of next-generation RF and power electronic technologies. At the forefront of this progress is the strategic use of epilayer engineering in aggressively scaled GaN HEMTs, which enables enhanced efficiency, robustness, and power density at millimeter-wave frequencies. However, state-of-the-art GaN HEMTs still face key challenges, including suboptimal efficiency in the Ka-band and beyond (<50%), increased trapping effects, diminished electron confinement, and reliability concerns in deeply scaled (<150 nm) devices operating at high power densities (>3 W/mm). This seminar will present innovative solutions based on advanced epitaxial heterostructures that significantly improve device performance and reliability. In parallel, the development of fully vertical GaN devices on large-diameter silicon substrates addresses longstanding issues such as the thermal mismatch between GaN and Si. By employing localized substrate removal techniques alongside optimized epitaxy and processing, recent breakthroughs include the demonstration of 1200 V-class vertical GaN pn diodes with avalanche capability, low on-resistance, and high current handling.Together, these technological advances mark a critical step forward in realizing the full potential of GaN for high-performance RF and power electronics, and position GaN-based platforms as key enablers of future energy and communication systems

    Miyawaki and Urban Tiny Forests in Italy

    International audienceRapid urbanization and climate change demand innovative green solutions in city planning. Tiny forests—small artificial wooded areas in urban or peri-urban settings—are gaining attention. This paper explores the use of the Miyawaki method to establish such forests in Italy, highlighting their environmental and educational benefits. The study defines micro-forests (100–200 m2) and mini-forests (200–2000 m2) per legislative standards and describes the qualitative features needed for self-sustaining ecosystems. Mimicking natural succession, these forests support biodiversity, reduce urban heat, improve air quality, and act as carbon sinks. Beyond ecological functions, they offer strong pedagogical value, fostering naturalistic intelligence and reconnecting people with natural rhythms and ecosystems. Case studies from Vigevano and Rome show practical applications, demonstrating how tiny forests can enhance sustainability, community well-being, and environmental awareness in cities

    International audienceÀ côté de l'action en vue du prononcé d'une peine (C. pr. pén., art. 1er), le législateur offre la possibilité de mettre en oeuvreune autre action devant les juridictions répressives : l'action civile. Cette dernière permet à « tous ceux qui ontpersonnellement souffert du dommage directement causé par l'infraction » d'en demander la réparation (C. pr. pén., art. 2),éventuellement de façon concomitante à l'action publique et devant la même juridiction pénale (C. pr. pén., art. 3). Il s'agitni plus ni moins d'une action en réparation fondée sur la responsabilité civile délictuelle de l'auteur de l'infraction.Si par principe seule la victime ayant souffert de l'infraction est habilitée à exercer l'action civile, le législateur accorde àcertaines associations la possibilité d'exercer les droits de la partie civile dans le but d'assurer la défense d'un intérêt collectif(C. pr. pén., art. 2-1 s.). Il s'agit d'une dérogation exceptionnelle à l'article 2 du code de procédure pénale. L'arrêt du 15octobre rendu par la Cour de cassation porte spécifiquement sur la recevabilité de l'action civile exercée par l'une de cesassociations engagées dans la lutte contre les différentes formes de violences familiales

    Structural basis for UDG identifying DNA damage in the nucleosome

    International audienceThe DNA base-excision repair (BER) pathway is initiated by a glycosylase, such as UDG, which identifies and removes a wrong base incorporated in the DNA sequence. The very early steps in the identification of the DNA damage are crucial to the correct initiation of the repair chain, and become even more complex when considering the realistic environment of damage to the DNA in the nucleosome. We performed all-atom docking and molecular dynamics computer simulations of the interaction between the glycosylase UDG and a mutated uracil. The model system is a whole nucleosome in which DNA damage is inserted at various positions along the 145-bp sequence. It is shown that damage recognition by UDG requires very strict structural conditions, unlikely to be matched by purely random search along the DNA. We propose that mechanical deformation of the DNA around the defective sites may help signaling the presence of the defect, accelerating the search process
