NovaMatic Industries: Investment Timing and Real Options Valuation

    No full text
The Case Centre, case study 125-0033-1, teaching note 125-0033-8, teaching note supplement 125-0033-8BThis case introduces students to real options analysis through a strategic investment decision at NovaMatic Industries. The firm must evaluate whether to invest immediately in a USD150.8 million automated production facility or delay the decision by two years to gain more market clarity, despite potential cost escalation. Students compare the two strategies using traditional NPV analysis, decision tree modeling, the Black-Scholes option pricing framework, and Monte Carlo simulation. The case highlights the limitations of static valuation under uncertainty and demonstrates how the value of flexibility can be quantified. Designed for courses that integrate corporate finance with programming, the case requires students to build Python-based models and translate analytical results into managerial recommendations. Through this process, students gain practical experience in modeling risk, valuing timing options, and interpreting simulation results. The teaching package includes a fully documented solution notebook to support implementation and facilitate in-class discussion. This case is well-suited for master's-level courses in finance, financial engineering, or analytics that emphasize applied problem solving, data-driven decision-making, and communication of investment insights

High-fidelity Haptic Surface: Development of Controlled Friction Interfaces

    No full text
Haptique et vibrotactile : approche physique et transducteurs; GTEA - Transducteurs et Électroacoustique: GSAM - Acoustique MusicaleNational audienceHaptics diffused in our everyday devices from the smartphone and the vibrotactile alert to other sectors like healthcare and automotive applications. Recent advances have seen high-fidelity haptics emerging that can enhance communication from human to the machine. The friction based tactile interfaces recreate the modulation of friction forces that exist when touching a rough surface. Texture can then used as a language in Human Computer Interfaces. Using a vibrating plate at ultrasonic frequency, friction can be reduced with a fingertip. If the vibration amplitude can be modulated, high-fidelity haptics can be achieved. The paper presents the design principles of a high fidelity haptic interface which exploits a transversal mode of a glass plate. A closed loop control, which helps to compensate for damping which occurs whe the finger touches the interface is developped. Then, multimodal excitation of the plate is presented in order to confine the vibration to a specific location on the plate

    No full text

Beyond Human Perception: Challenges in AI Interpretability of Orangutan Artwork

    No full text
International audienceDrawings serve as a profound medium of expression for both humans and apes, offering unique insights into the cognitive and emotional landscapes of the artists, regardless of their species. This study employs artificial intelligence (AI), specifically Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and the interpretability tool Captum, to analyze non-figurative drawings by Molly, an orangutan. The research utilizes VGG19 and ResNet18 models toClick here to view linked References decode seasonal nuances in the drawings, achieving notable accuracy in seasonal classification and revealing complex influences beyond human-centric methods. Techniques such as occlusion, integrated gradients, PCA, t-SNE, and Louvain clustering highlight critical areas and elements influencing seasonal recognition, providing deeper insights into the drawings. This approach not only advances the analysis of non-human art but also demonstrates the potential of AI to enrich our understanding of non-human cognitive and emotional expressions, with significant implications for fields like evolutionary anthropology and comparative psychology.</p

100 Gbit/s and Beyond IEEE 802.15.3d Channelization Compatible THz Communications Enabled by a Broadband MUTC Photodiode

    No full text
International audienceWe present photonics-driven high data rate IEEE 802.15.3d compliant terahertz (THz) communication links operated at a center frequency of 280 GHz. We analyze wireless data transmission within selected single and dual channels of the IEEE 802.15.3d and assess the outcomes through additional back-to-back (B2B) data transmission measurements and calibrated link budgets of the THz link. The system architecture uses on-wafer probing of a single high-power and highly linear broadband modified uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (MUTC-PD). Using the MUTC-PD as THz transmitter, we report 16-QAM 100 Gbit/s 25-cm wireless links for single and dual channel data transmission with significantly low error vector magnitude (EVM) levels, that is, 12.3% and 10.9%, respectively. As for B2B demonstration, we successfully transmit 200 Gbit/s (32-QAM) in a single channel with 7.5% EVM and 160 Gbit/s (16-QAM) in dual channel with 7.8% EVM. We further display the highly linear nature of the MUTC-PD by efficient data transmission with higher modulation formats, which is also supported by the power-saturation characteristics of the PD. To the best of the authors´ knowledge, this is the first study investigating the IEEE 802.15.3d channelization compliancy through system level design and spectral verification while at the same time achieving 100 Gbit/s and beyond data rates with notably low EVM values

    No full text
