Phytochemical and pharmacological elucidation of Jasonia glutinosa (L.) fourr. essential oil: a promising therapeutic source against inflammation and cancer

    No full text
International audienceThe growing demand for natural therapeutics with safer pharmacological profiles has renewed interest in aromatic plants traditionally used in folk medicine. Jasonia glutinosa (L.) Fourr. (Asteraceae), commonly known as "sticky fleabane", is a medicinal and aromatic species widely employed for its digestive and anti-inflammatory benefits. Despite its ethnopharmacological relevance, the bioactive potential of its essential oil remains poorly explored. This study provides a multifaceted investigation of the chemical composition, safety profile, and pharmacological activities of J. glutinosa essential oil (JGEO). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis revealed nerolidol (51.29%) as the predominant constituent, accompanied by isoaromadendrene epoxide (17.39%) and cis-α-copaene-8-ol (9.92%). The genotoxicity assessment, conducted using the alkaline comet assay on rat leukocytes, demonstrated no significant DNA damage at concentrations up to 100 µg/mL, confirming the oil's genomic safety within the tested range. Pharmacological evaluation showed that JGEO exerted potent anti-inflammatory effects, significantly reducing nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E₂ (PGE₂) production in LPS-stimulated macrophages - with NO levels decreasing to 18.4% of control values and PGE₂ from 720 µM to 108.2 µM (p < 0.001). Moreover, JGEO exhibited selective cytotoxicity against multiple human cancer cell lines, with IC₅₀ values of 15.43 µg/mL (MCF-7), 24.24 µg/mL (MDA-MB-468), 74.57 µg/mL (HCT-15), and 18.06 µg/mL (HepG2). Remarkably, high selectivity indices for MCF-7 (SI = 63.67) and HepG2 (SI = 54.40) surpassed those of doxorubicin, highlighting its favorable therapeutic window. Collectively, these findings provide a scientific basis for the traditional uses of J. glutinosa, emphasizing its safety, efficacy, and chemical richness. The study positions JGEO as a promising natural source of bioactive terpenoids for the development of anti-inflammatory and anticancer agents, supporting its further exploration in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations

    Towards Polyoxometalate Nanoelectronics

    No full text
Polyoxometalates form a large family of molecular oxide clusters of the early transition metals with unique and tunable properties (multi-redox, thermal and chemical robustness, magnetic). We review more than 30 years of experimental research on the electron transport properties of polyoxometalates devices, from thin films and self-assembled monolayers down to single-molecule junctions. We focus on the relationship between the polyoxometalate structures (structural type, nature of metals and heteroatoms, role of the counterions, redox states, electrode linkers and functional ligands) and the electronic structures of the polyoxometalate-based devices (energy positions of the molecular orbitals, energy offset at the interfaces). Then, we critically discuss the performances of polyoxometalates in nanoelectronics devices: capacitance and resistive switching memories, spintronics, quantum bits and neuromorphic devices. We conclude with a discussion about pending issues and perspectives

Everything counts in large amounts: A systemic discourse analysis of official texts related to the UN’s sustainable development goals

    No full text
International audienceSince 2015 and its adoption by the United Nations (UN), the sustainable development goals (SDGs) program and its 17 SDGs have been a source of inspiration for numerous sectors, in order to reach the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. In sectors as diverse as industry, human rights, ecology, or education, several institutions, organizations, and stakeholders have used the opportunity offered by the SDGs to make sustainable choices or apply specific policies. Yet it is also true that the sheer application of the SDGs have triggered grounded criticism, insofar as it offered readymade templates to reproduce inequalities or foster wrong decisions. In this sense, the 2030 agenda has raised some concern regarding a new form of colonialism it seems to rely on, its permanent links to an economy of growth and non-decent work, or the pervasive impacts on education and social inequalities. Such critical points have motivated scholars to work on a reinterpreted application of the SDGs, underline the positive evolution of the SDGs in comparison to the millenium development goals, and call for an adaptation of the SDGs regarding climate change and planetary limits. As a linguist, my approach regarding the 17 SDGs is rooted in systemic discourse analysis-an applied discourse study that simultaneously draws on critical discourse analysis, corpus studies and lexicometric analysis, which I will define later in the present chapter. My goal is to analyze every official text published in order to present and encourage the application of each of the 17 SDGs, thus building a corpus by extracting texts from official sources published on the Internet website of the UN, dedicated to the 2030 agenda for sustainable development. In this sense, a link is made between discourse structures, social structures, and social representations

Synthesis and characterization of vertical diode based on organic P-N heterojunction with rectification behavior

International audienceIn this paper, we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on an organic diode heterostructure based on n-type polymer, N2200, and p-type, pentacene, junction. First the device under investigation was fabricated and characterized. The structure exhibits rectifying diode behavior with a rectification ratio that can reach up to 500. Theoretical modeling was conducted, based on numerical simulation using Technology Computer Aided Design (TCAD) software, to predict the electrical response of the studied structure. The numerical simulation was fitted and compared with the experimental results to understand the effect of traps density on such materials. Results confirm that defects play a crucial role in defining the behavior of electronic devices based on organic materials

Torricelli’s Opera Geometrica (1644): Methods, Procedures, and the Structure of Mathematical Proof

    No full text
International audienceThis historical–scientific essay is written in the context of the scholarly celebrations marking the 380th anniversary of the publication of Evangelista Torricelli’s Opera Geometrica (1644–2024), and forms part of recent international initiatives devoted to a renewed historical and historiographical assessment of Torricelli’s scientific work. The article examines Torricelli’s life and writings within their scientific context, highlighting the Archimedean heritage underlying his geometry and mechanics. In addition, the internal development of the Opera Geometrica is analysed through a combined historical and editorial perspective, addressing both the structure of the work and its complex transmission. On this basis, the paper discusses Torricelli’s most significant results (1608–1647), especially in mechanics and geometry, and focuses on his methodological approach to proof. In this context, the diversity of procedures adopted by Torricelli emerges as a key element for assessing the originality and methodological independence of his results. The analysis further addresses two achievements of central mathematical significance: the determination of the volume of the solido acutissimo and the geometrical treatment of the logarithmic spiral. In order to clarify the scientific genesis and editorial organisation of the Opera Geometrica, an ad hoc reconstruction of its contents is proposed, based on the original chronological sequence of Torricelli’s writings. This reconstruction provides a framework for reassessing the place of the Opera Geometrica in the development of early modern mathematical physics

Quand l'Esprit parle au peuple : Études sur le sensus fidei

    No full text

    No full text
