The motive behind the present considerations was the literary and archival legacy of Henryk Bereska, one o f the most eminent translators of Polish literature into the German language. A concise introduction presents briefly the life of H. Bereska and describes the nature of the body of archival work currently held at the university library of Viadrina University in Frankfurt/Oder. Further, the author proceeds to analyze the methods employed for processing personal archives in Poland and in Germany. The most favourable processing methodology created by the team headed by H. Bereska was worked out as the result of the combination of the techniques elaborated in the two aforementioned methodological schools. The approach to processing the body of literary work of the translator was done according to Polish rules for physical ordering of literary legacies and German rules for making up inventories of the processed material. The article also presents the integrated, open Kalliope database, a tool used in the inventory making process employed for documents included in the legacy. The author discusses his comparative analysis of Polish and German archival thought related to processing personal archives. November 24th, 2008 marks the tenth anniversary of the issuing of the regulation defining the National Library Stock Creation and the rules governing its preservation along with the list of libraries to be included in the scheme. The inclusion of a library in the list of participating libraries is a proof of the appreciation of the importance of the collections of a particular library 011 the one hand, but imposes additional tasks related to the preservation and the processing of the resources and the care of its preservation 011 the other. It should be noticed at this juncture that unfortunately no unambiguous definition of the National Library Stock has been provided yet and, likewise there are 110 proper indication of financial resources to be assigned in support of these additional tasks imposed 011 the selected libraries. Things as they are, however, make the scope and the pace of work in individual libraries particularly dependent on their individual capabilities and worked out criteria to be applied.November 24th, 2008 marks the tenth anniversary of the issuing of the regulation defining the National Library Stock Creation and the rules governing its preservation along with the list of libraries to be included in the scheme. The article recalls the events surrounding the issuing of the emergency appeal launched by the municipal authorities of the town of Poznań in 1874 for handing over books, journals and pamphlets to the Council Library. The aim behind the appeal was to collect as much material related to the history of the region and the contemporary issues of the areas that belong to the then Grand Duchy of Poznań as possible. On the basis of the analysis of the contents of the library Catalogue from the year 1883, i.e. the date when the effort was completed, one can say that, to a certain degree, the appeal led to a successful completion resulting in a quantitative development o f the resources. However, the author also points at the qualitative shortcomings in the ensuing growth of the collections. The employed analysis proves that the basic task of the appeal was not fulfilled and the library created in the process did not preserve sufficiently complete resource of works. The article recalls the events surrounding the issuing of the emergency appeal launched by the municipal authorities of the town of Poznań in 1874 for handing over books, journals and pamphlets to the Council Library. The article outlines the current work on the model framework for designing a local staff evaluation system (SES) and its subsequent implementation at Poznań University Library. The starting point for the preliminary work on the project was setting up objectives of the evaluation, defining the scope, rules and assumptions to be applied in the system. The next stage was to work out and adopt evaluation and assessment criteria and then the choice of methods and tools preparation - evaluation sheets. The planned procedure to be employed by the SES was codified in the written rules to be followed during the implementation. Each stage of the preliminary work involved meetings with staff members of the library where the advances in the system were discussed. Training courses in the system were also provided for would-be evaluators and evaluatees. Further steps in implementing the system are briefly outlined and discussed. The article outlines the current work on the model framework for designing a local staff evaluation system (SES) and its subsequent implementation at Poznań University Library. The comic book is a product of mass culture. It got deeply rooted in American and Western European popular culture in the 1970s. In France, this type of sequential art told in pictorial stories was presented in daily papers ( bande dessinee) and developed humorously-told threads o f the plot. In the UK it won juvenile audience with its simple jokes, genre scenes and shortened and abridged versions o f fables. In the United States, in turn, crude science fiction, horror or joke graphic stories were most popular. However, in the late 1990s these depictions increasingly started to develop into something of much different nature. On the one hand, popular culture embraced more and more different creative areas, wrestled with subject and themes that so far had been tackled only by more sophisticated literature (for example, war themes). On the other hand, Polish reader had a better chance to experience new titles and pictorial stories from the West or other far-away cultures that represented high artistic skills and offered original and remarkable stories. This, in turn, created a new situation in which adult readers turned to comic books. Moreover, comic books became a subject of interests for academics beyond those who were professionally involved in documenting and understanding popular culture, i.e. for methodologists of history, modern culture anthropologists, researchers in literature and art historians. Today’s status of comic books in literature is pronouncedly higher than that of several years ago. For it is not only the artistic level that has been much developed and improved, but also the thematic range of subject to be tackled by this form of literature. Additionally, the context within comics have been functioning in the space of modern discourse has also changed. A particular type of comics is the one that presents historical contents. Works of brilliant artists from different cultures such as, for example, Hiroshima 19Ą5 Barefoot Gen by Nakazawa Keij, Art Spiegelman’s Motts, or Achtung Zeligl by Krzysztof Gawronkiewicz and Krystian Rosenberg have become available 011 the Polish publishing market and have been widely reviewed and discussed academically. In the present article these comic books or graphic novels are interpreted as different types of maze: the Cretean maze, mystery-maze and maze-rhizome.The comic book is a product of mass culture. The article examines eighteenth and nineteenth century posters produced or commissioned by the German Municipal Theatre in Poznań (then German Posen) that have been preserved in the collections of the Raczyński Library. The posters under scrutiny here were issued between 1789-1867. The sheer time span of this continuously documented history of Poznań theatre makes it possible to carry out an analysis of the changing repertoire of staged plays, actors’ staff members and art leaders, but also that of the pattern for the theatrical posters, graphical elements or the material used for their production. The article aims at presenting the function and the role of the aforementioned factors in the then theatre life of the multicultured Poznań as well as the meaning and significance of the theatre in the town itself. The article examines eighteenth and nineteenth century posters produced or commissioned by the German Municipal Theatre in Poznań (then German Posen) that have been preserved in the collections of the Raczyński Library.
