    No full text
International audienceAs iron is one of the most abundant resources on earth and a low toxicity transition metal, it is only natural that chemical reactions and catalysis revolving around this resource have attracted attention. Over the past three decades, considerable progress has been made in the field of coordination insertion polymerization using iron catalysts.[1] Of particular interest is a type of iron-based complexes supported by iminopyridine ligands, which enables the stereoselective cis or trans polymerization of conjugated dienes depending on the substituent on the N-imino group.[2] In this study, we focus on this particular family of complexes, more precisely on iminopyridine N-aryl fluorinated iron complexes {with iminopyridine 2-[(Ar)N=C(R)]C5H4N, where Ar = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3 and R = H (L1) or CH3 (L3); Ar = C6H5 and R = H (L2) or CH3 (L4)}. Four complexes were isolated as single crystals, and their molecular structures were elucidated by X-ray diffraction, revealing distinct coordination depending on the nature of the ligand (Fig. 1). Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirmed the presence of Fe(II) in a high-spin state across all complexes, which was further supported by DFT calculations

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG) with a global warming potential approximately 273 times greater than Carbon dioxide (CO2). This gas is emitted into the atmosphere through various Nitrogen transformation processes, including denitrification, which occurs under anaerobic conditions in wetlands. Riparian wetlands significantly contribute to denitrification during flooding events that create the necessary anaerobic environment. The emission of N2O related to denitrification fluctuates considerably across time and space due to the interaction of abiotic and biotic factors that is difficult to measure and quantify. This thesis aimed to enhance the understanding of denitrification-related N2O emissions in riparian wetlands through utilizing multiple combined field and laboratory approaches. In this work, water content and bacterial diversity were the center of attention and we aimed to understand their relation, in time and space, to N2O emission in riparian ecosystems. For this objective, denitrification process was investigated at the confluent of the Garonne River, upstream of Toulouse, France. Although unsignificant due to spatial heterogeneity, forest cover showed that is better mitigating N2O emission than unforested riparian sites with a mean emission of 0.23±0.29 µmol/m2/hr. The riparian areas with higher proximity to water bodies showed a higher mean N2O flux with a very high variability when compared to sites with lower proximity to water bodies who have an average emission of 5.6± 14.4 µmol/m2/hr and 0.60 ± 0.99 µmol/m2/hr, respectively. Over a 3-day period, continuous N2O emission monitoring identified a significant source of N2O release in the less frequently flooded area with a peak of 27 µmol/m2/hr, coinciding with a nitrate hotspot of 16.9 mgN/L in the pore water of the soil. Through simulating flood conditions, GHG-Aquacosme evaluates N2O dynamics and controlling factors in undisturbed riparian soil cores from a confluent site and two riparian sites in Tordera and Cànoves, Spain. The experiments revealed an inverse correlation between initial soil moisture and nitrate levels in pore water with total N2O emissions and the time to reach N2O hot moments. For infrequently flooded dry sites, soil samples with 20.75±3.99% initial moisture showed peak N2O emissions of 35.53±13.05 µmol/m2/hr within 58 hrs of flooding. Frequently flooded dry sites, with 35.24±4.95% initial moisture, had lower peak emissions of 4.18±3.38 µmol/m2/hr within 8 hrs. Frequently flooded wet sites exhibited higher bacterial diversity, which negatively correlated with the N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio and denitrifier abundance. GHG-Aquacosme findings indicated weak correlations between N2O emissions and functional gene abundance (NirS, NirK, NosZI, and NosZII), suggesting regulation by enzymatic activity rather than gene abundance. In conclusion, this thesis highlights that utilizing multiple approaches and a holistic evaluation of denitrification process and its controller better contributed to our understanding of the process and its contribution to N2O emission at the riparian site. The key finding indicates that prior soil moisture levels play significant role in determining the locations and times of peak N2O emissions upon flooding in riparian sites. At a broader level, the proposed restoration of riparian wetlands is encouraged to reduce N2O emissions and enhance long-term bacterial diversity.

This research work, conducted as part of a PhD in organometallic chemistry, originates from a project initially aimed at developing new group VI metal-based catalysts for liquids organics hydrogen carriers (LOHC). However, challenges encountered during the first year, particularly in reproducing literature results on catalytic dehydrogenation, led to a shift in focus toward the catalytic hydrogenation of organic substrates using molybdenum complexes supported with pincer or polyhydride ligands. The first chapter explores the history of catalytic hydrogenation, highlighting its industrial importance and the need to replace rare and costly metals with more accessible alternatives. Pincer ligands, with their unique properties, are identified as a promising solution for stabilizing less expensive metals, such as molybdenum, as presented in this manuscript. In the second chapter, attention is given to the tridentate ligand 2,6-bis(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine (bpp), known for its ability to stabilize the coordination sphere of d-block metal complexes. Two series of molybdenum complexes are synthesized and characterized: neutral nitrosyl complexes and a new family of heptacoordinated complexes in oxidation state +II. Their reactivity, particularly through double protonation of the bpp ligands, is studied in the prespective of their application in catalytic hydrogenation. The final chapter addresses a related project focused on molybdenum polyhydride complexes. Two cationic polyhydride complexes are synthesized and tested for the homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of organic substrates. The study includes optimizing experimental conditions, exploring limitations, providing application examples, and proposing a catalytic cycle based on the obtained results. This work opens avenues for developing molybdenum catalytic systems and exploring more complex substrates, particularly those of pharmaceutical interest. In conclusion, this research highlights the potential of molybdenum complexes for hydrogenation applications, offering viable alternatives to catalysts based on rare and costly metals.

Evaluating low-pass genotyping strategies using PARSEC, a scalable and modular Nextflow pipeline

    No full text
International audienceLow-pass sequencing combined with genotype imputation offers a cost-effective alternative to SNP arrays for high-resolution genotyping in large-scale genomic studies. However, it requires specific algorithms and computational resources. We present PARSEC, a modular and scalable Nextflow pipeline for processing low-pass sequencing data and performing genotype imputation using three state-of-the-art tools: Stitch, Beagle, and Glimpse. We used PARSEC on a real-world dataset of 1,050 pig offsprings of 12 founders by subsampling their sequencing data to various depths. PARSEC scales efficiently with large datasets and supports different imputation strategies. Our results show that tools tailored for low-pass data (Stitch and Glimpse) significantly outperform Beagle, a general-purpose imputation tool. Furthermore, we demonstrate that joint imputation of closely related individuals using Stitch is more accurate than using a reference haplotype panel with Glimpse. We also monitored resource usage across all scenarios, confirming that PARSEC can process large cohorts using widely accessible computational infrastructure.PARSEC provides a user-friendly, reproducible, and portable solution for large-scale low-pass sequencing projects. Beyond its practical utility as a bioinformatics pipeline, it also offers methodological insights into low-pass sequencing and imputation strategies. As such, it is a valuable tool both for implementing large-scale studies and for guiding methodological decisions in population genomics and association research

Visual Homing in Outdoor Robots Using Mushroom Body Circuits and Learning Walks

    No full text
International audienceAnts achieve robust visual homing with minimal sensory input and only a few learning walks, inspiring biomimetic solutions for autonomous navigation. While Mushroom Body (MB) models have been used in robotic route following, they have not yet been applied to visual homing. We present the first real-world implementation of a lateralized MB architecture for visual homing onboard a compact autonomous carlike robot. We test whether the sign of the angular path integration (PI) signal can categorize panoramic views, acquired during learning walks and encoded in the MB, into "goal on the left" and "goal on the right" memory banks, enabling robust homing in natural outdoor settings. We validate this approach through four incremental experiments: (1) simulation showing attractor-like nest dynamics; (2) real-world homing after decoupled learning walks, producing nest search behavior; (3) homing after random walks using noisy PI emulated with GPS-RTK; and (4) precise stopping-at-the-goal behavior enabled by a fifth MB Output Neuron (MBON) encoding goal-views to control velocity. This mimics the accurate homing behavior of ants and functionally resembles waypoint based position control in robotics, despite relying solely on visual input. Operating at 8 Hz on a Raspberry Pi 4 with 32×32 pixel views and a memory footprint under 9 kB, our system offers a biologically grounded, resource-efficient solution for autonomous visual homing

A collaborative and multidisciplinary approach to territorial and rural development 25 years of the PSDR programme

    No full text
International audienceHow can we encourage the emergence and dissemination of knowledge in peripheral areas often considered less innovative due to their remoteness and less technological creativity? For 25 years, the PSDR (For and On Regional Development) program has endeavored to bridge this gap by building a collaborative and multidisciplinary approach taking into account the particularities of rural territories. This article aims to present the contributions of this research program to the creation and dissemination of knowledge in rural areas. The article quickly outlines the evolution of the program through these four major phases, before presenting the management systems that structure it. We then recall some important results from the scientific literature relating to the development issues of rural territories and the role played by the production of knowledge before moving on to the main contributions of this research. Five thematic fields are covered. The evolution of agricultural practices and land governance near cities highlights the changes that have occurred in recent years in an attempt to preserve spaces in a context of city expansion. The links between attractiveness and territorial well-being underline the specific expectations towards rural territories. The agroecological transition of territories emphasizes innovative agricultural practices and obstacles to change, most often within the framework of collective experiments. Work on territorialized food systems analyzes the strategies at work over the past ten years and the governance mechanisms that underpin them. Finally, the bioeconomy and the circular economy are mainly approached from the angle of its social acceptability and technical and organizational conditions. We also insist on the need to combine technological, organizational and territorial innovation and to involve local partners in the design and development of research programs. On these bases rural areas can produce new knowledge that benefits local communities and can be transferred to other sectors or territories

    No full text
International audienceCONTEXT: Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common sexual disorder. In France, recent evidence-based guidelines are lacking. AIM: To provide practice guidelines on ED therapeutic management. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: Publications indexed in PubMed/Medline® between January 1999 and October 2023, were reviewed. For each clinical question, a level of evidence was attributed to the conclusions. These conclusions and the working group arguments were used to develop and grade (A-C) the recommendations. RECOMMENDATIONS: ED management must be personalized. Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5I) are recommended as first-line treatment (A). In patients with severe ED, a combination of PDE5I may be proposed as first- or second-line treatment (Expert Agreement, EA). Extra-cavernous or intra-urethral injections of alprostadil may be offered as first-line alternative to PDE5I or as second-line treatment (B). In case of unsatisfactory response to PDE5I or alprostadil alone, the combination of a PDE5I with intra-cavernosal or intra-urethral alprostadil may be proposed (EA). Vacuum therapy can be offered to all patients (B). Low-intensity extracorporeal shockwave therapy may be proposed to patients with mild or moderate ED, alone or in combination with PDE5I (B). Penile implants are indicated for patients with ED who are refractory or intolerant to pharmacological or mechanical treatments, or if they wish a permanent solution (B). Revascularization surgery may be offered to patients without comorbidities following pelvic trauma and ED with isolated arterial insufficiency (B). In addition to pharmaceutical, mechanical and/or surgical treatments, it is suggested to always consider educational interventions and counseling, lifestyle modifications and management of co-morbidities and curable causes.CONTEXTE : La dysfonction érectile (DE) est un trouble sexuel courant.
