Adaptation of the Cyst Nematode Globodera pallida to the Colinear Potato Resistant QTLs GpaVvrn and GpaVspl Involved Distinct Genomic Regions and Absence of Cross-Virulence
International audienceThe use of alternative methods to control cyst nematode populations has accelerated since the ban of chemical nematicides in Europe. The resistant QTL GpaVvrn, derived from the wild species Solanum vernei, is widely present in resistant European potato cultivars and provides strong protection against Globodera pallida populations although a risk of resistance breakdown has already been demonstrated in both experimental evolution studies and field populations. The wild relative S. sparsipilum, harbouring the resistant QTL GpaVspl, would be an interesting alternative source of resistance to control virulent G. pallida. The goal of the present study was to understand the genomics of adaptation of the nematode to these two colinear resistant QTLs. Starting with two natural populations, an experimental evolution approach allowed, after 10 generations on resistant potato genotypes, selecting independent nematode lineages adapted to each QTL. These virulent lineages were analysed through a combination of phenotyping and genome scans approaches. Phenotyping enabled the quantification of virulence levels and confirmed resistance breakdowns. Pool‐Seq whole genome sequencing followed by genome scan analyses identified genomic regions under selection, potentially involved in the adaptive mechanisms to each resistance factor. Candidate genes within these regions provided insights into the genetic basis of adaptation, revealing effectors known to suppress plant immunity. As genome scans highlighted distinct genomic regions for the adaptation to both resistant factors, we were able to predict and phenotypically confirm the absence of cross‐virulence between nematode lineages evolving on GpaVvrn and GpaVspl. These findings have significant implications for the design of effective and sustainable resistance management strategies
Ada en noir et blanc
International audienceIn his seminal 1985 monograph Nabokov’s Ada: The Place of Consciousness, Brian Boyd highlights the duality of Nabokov’s longest novel disclosing both its bright and dark side. As he points out, one of the main characters, Adelaida Veen, is itself described in black and white contrary to her siblings who both have at least some hints of colour. Even her family lineage is imbued with different shades of blue. However, despite this chromatic diversity, we will see that both Ada, the character and the imagery throughout the eponym novel Ada remain bi-chromatic for the most part, if one considers black and white to be colours. Its iconic quote “Remembrance, like Rembrandt, is dark but festive” (ADA 403) hints at this chiaroscuro atmosphere which seems to prevade in it. This choice of black and white is rather interesting considering that Nabokov prided himself with his ability to distinguish different hues. Published in 1969, but written throughout the sixties, the writing of this novel coincides with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States and a series of protests against segregation epitomized in Nina Simone’s iconic 1964 protest song “Mississippi Goddam”. Nabokov as a seismologist of his time has managed to capture antisemitism in Berlin in his novel The Gift, which he happened to write throughout 1930’s. In this paper, I attempt to unravel the significance of the chromatic choices in Ada and explore the potential link to Nabokov’s commentary against segregation
The diurnal cycle and temperature dependence of crystal shapes in ice clouds from satellite lidar polarized measurements
International audienceAbstract. The shape of crystals in ice clouds influences many aspects of the cloud lifecycle and radiative impact, yet they are extremely variable and hard to categorize. In this paper, we apply a recent crystal shape classification methodology to 33 months of spaceborne lidar measurements. We take advantage of their non-sun-synchronous nature to document the diurnal variability of ice crystal shapes. We find that that mid-level clouds are dominated by 3D bullets and 2D columns, with more 3D bullets at higher latitudes, in agreement with previous results. Shape dependence on latitude is generally symmetric around the equator. We document the repartition of shapes with temperatures, and show that the proportion of complex shapes (Droxtals and Voronois) increases at colder temperatures, becoming dominant below -60 °C. Finally, we document the diurnal cycle of the repartition of shapes according to temperature and latitude. We find that 2D plates and columns appear preferentially during daytime, while complex shapes are more likely to appear during nighttime. 3D bullets follow a unique behavior, shifting from a daytime maximum at coldest temperatures to a nighttime maximum at warmer temperatures. The amplitude of diurnal cycles generally strengthens at colder temperatures. These results provide new constraints for the representation of ice clouds in atmospheric and climate models
Animal welfare in zoos is a subject of debate, caught between ethical requirements and conservation missions. To address this issue, the French Association of Zoos (AFdPZ) has developed an animal welfare assessment grid (BEA) based on the Five Domains model, with the aim of adapting it to each species in the future. This is the case for the manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus), a vulnerable aquatic mammal that is rarely found in captivity. A specific grid was designed with experts, based on scientific data, and then tested on 14 individuals at the Beauval ZooParc, a leading institution in animal welfare and conservation. In addition, two behavioral indicators, anticipation and willingness to participate (WtP), were evaluated to refine the analysis. The study made it possible to assess the feasibility of the protocol in the field, to propose an initial interpretation of the parameters obtained, and to make adjustments to enhance the sensitivity of the tool.
Mitigate GHG emissions on mixed livestock systems
Session 17 - Poster 13International audienceThe Climate Neutral Farms (ClieNFarms) project aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon storage in the agricultural sector. This project is based on a network of 20 demonstration case studies (I3S) where systemic innovative solutions were tested and evaluated using up-to-date modeling approaches and multicriteria assessment tools. We will focus on the dairy and beef case studies in Ireland, France, Netherlands, Spain, New-Zealand, Germany, Switzerland, Ukraine and Poland. Each farm carried out an initial assessment to define its environmental impact and, in particular, its carbon footprint. From this point, the farmers defined their action plan in co-construction. They rely on the catalogue of solutions drawn up by the project, as well as on the discussions held at their region’s creative arena, which brought together various players in the production sector. The levers chosen by the farmer are adapted to their own system and production objectives. The aim is then to measure the environmental and economic impact of implementing these practices. This will involve a finalassessment to quantify these changes, in particular the carbon footprint, but also other environmental indicators such as biodiversity, nitrogen management, water quality and soil health. The data collected will also enable a comparison of the diversity of carbon footprint calculation tools that exist in Europe. This tools comparison will highlight the different emission factors or sensitivities of the different tools. Finally, one of the aims of this project is also to disseminate these mitigation solutions via demonstration events to encourage peer-to-peer learning, or via microlearning to reach an audience of advisers and students. Involving the supply chains in this project, in particular via dairy companies, is also a way of broadening dissemination. Once the prior economic impact has been defined, suitable incentives can be set up by players downstream of production. The ambition of this upstream-downstream agricultural project is finally to introduce practical mitigation solutions on farms, which will be widely disseminated and whose impact and measurement methodology will be assessed

Enhancing domain-specific named entity recognition via segmentation and pseudo-labeled annotation

One challenge lies in handling long documents, which often requires segmenting the text into smaller chunks that fit within the model's input window. Although several segmentation strategies exist, their impact on NER performance in new domains remains underexplored. Another challenge is domain adaptation: while openschema NER models can perform reasonably well under zero-shot settings, they often struggle in highly specialized contexts without additional supervision. To address these issues, we combine segmentation strategy selection with a semi-supervised finetuning pipeline based on pseudo-labeled annotations. First, we compare four segmentation strategies to identify which offers the best trade-off between precision and recall in zero-shot settings. Then, we fine-tune two open-schema NER models—GLiNER and NuNER—first on a manually annotated dataset, and subsequently on a large pseudo-labeled dataset built from model agreement. Both models are evaluated on a held-out test set and on the full manually annotated corpus. Experiments on French-language documents specifically focused on the underexplored domain of territorial food systems reveal that fine-tuning on pseudo-labeled data—obtained through cross-model agreement—yields better performance than relying solely on human-annotated data. The results also highlight the strengths and weaknesses of different segmentation strategies and confirm the importance of optimizing segmentation choices for NER in domain-specific low-resource settings.
