Online professionalism and the impact of social media on the practice of medicine
The rise of social media created by Internet users and hosted by popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia, and blogs - has brought several new risks to medical professionalism. First, many doctors may find it fascinating, in specific contexts, to apply principles of medical professionalism to the internet environment. Secondly, doctors may not consider the possible impact of their online content on their patients and the public. Thirdly, an instant lag in the judgment of an individual doctor to create non-professional online content may inappropriately reflect the entire profession. To overcome these challenges, individual doctors are encouraged to realize that as they "walk" through the Web, they leave behind a "footprint" that can have undesirable negative consequences for them and the profession in general. It also recommends that institutions adopt an active approach to attracting social media users to establish consensus standards for the 'internet professional'. Finally, since professionalism involves more than avoiding negative behaviors, examples of more positive applications for this technology are presented. Like a mirror, social media can reflect the best and worst aspects of the content that has been put before it so that everyone can see it
Hypatia Digital Library: A novel text classification approach for small text fragments
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to further investigate prior work of the authors in text classification in Hypatia, the digital library of the University of Western Attica. The main objective is to provide an accurate automated classification tool as an alternative to manual assignments.Design/methodology/approach - The crucial point in text classification is the selection of the most important term-words for document representation. The specific document collection consists of 718 abstracts in Medicine, Tourism and Food Technology. Two weighting methods were investigated: classic TF.IDF and DEVMAX.DF. The last one was proposed by the authors as a more accurate term-word selection tool for smaller text fragments. Classification was conducted by applying 14 classifiers available on WEKA.Findings - Classification process yielded an excellent ~97% precision score and DEVMAX.DF proved to perform better than classic TF.IDF
Evaluation of the Archival, Library and Information Studies Department eClass at University of West Attica
Purpose - This paper presents and discusses the main results of a survey concerning students and faculty (academic staff) evaluation of the eClass of the Department of Archival, Library Information Studies, University of West Attica, with the use of online questionnaire. The survey was conducted in October 2019 and it is a comparative study of a previous research-survey (about the eClass) of 2012.Design/methodology/approach - The questionnaire, consisted of open and closed-ended questions, and were sent respectively to the undergraduate and postgraduate students and the faculty’s staff (or professors) of the Department. As a result, 275 valid answers (233 undergraduates and 42 postgraduates’ valid responses) translated to a net response rate of 39%, while the faculty survey returned 29 valid answers with a 100% participation rate.Findings - The findings demonstrate that the students and the faculty agree that the eClass is essential for the Department’s courses and program (undergraduate and postgraduate). The communication and the interactions between the eClass platform and the users (faculty and students) has been very well established. Finally, the more interesting result that revealed from the regression analysis that was conducted, is that the more recent registration by the users (student and faculty), the more they visit the platform (eClass) and the higher they appreciated the system’s functionalities aspect. Originality/value – Useful findings were extracted regarding the evaluation of ALIS Dept eClass, after (almost) ten years of implementation. Useful comparison was made with the previous evaluation in 2012 and joined results extracted. The opinions gathered from the undergraduate and postgraduates’ students, and the faculty, reveal that the strategic goal of the ALIS Dept to use the eClass as a centralized component for the studies in the Dept, is a sophisticated choice
Pure cellulose paper ageing in sealed vessels. Autocatalytic depolymerization model revisited
Purpose - In the framework of the EU funded INVENVORG project (Thales Research Funding Program – NRSF), the natural and artificial ageing of bone, wood, textiles, parchment and paper were investigated.Design/methodology/approach - In this work, the results of accelerated ageing on pure cellulose paper in sealed vessels are reported. The properties studied include the degree of polymerization (which was converted to the percentage of broken glyosidic bonds), the tearing resistance, the pH and the L* and b* coordinates of the CIEL*a*b* color system. Ageing was performed in sealed vessels at 90°C και 76% RH for periods of 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 days.Findings - The results indicated an overall deterioration of all paper properties, which accelerates with time because of the production of volatile acidic species (autocatalysis). The evolution of paper properties through time was modeled efficiently by use of the equations proposed by Zervos and Moropoulou (2005) for the autocatalytic acid hydrolysis of pure cellulose paper, which were shown that also apply for following the changes of tearing resistance. The applicability of the model equations was also verified for other paper properties, such as the percentage of broken bonds (δ%) and the L* and b* coordinates of the CIEL*a*b* color system

The therapeutic value of atorvastatin, in relation to other therapeutic methods, in cardiological patients
Introduction: Atorvastatin is a selective, competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme responsible for converting 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-co-enzyme A to mevalonic acid, a precursor of sterols, including cholesterol . Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the therapeutic value of atorvastatin compared to other active substances in cardiological patients and to investigate the appropriate therapeutic dose. Material and Method: A systematic review was carried out involving 4 studies. The search for scientific articles was made in the international database PUB-MED and SCOPUS. Double blind, randomized clinical trials were sought in patients with diagnosed coronary artery disease who received atorvastatin. Control of treatment efficacy was based on the recording of new episodes and / or other cardiovascular events. Results: Administration of atorvastatin 10 mg versus 2 mg of pitavastatin is similar. Also, administration of atorvastatin at a dosage of 80 mg daily is safer and results in the recording of new episodes or other cardiovascular events as opposed to ad-ministration of atorvastatin 10 mg. Conclusions: From the scientific articles found and analyzed the administration of atorvastatin to cardiac patients has similar therapeutic value compared to other active substances. Administration of atorvastatin at a dosage of 80 mg predominates over atorvastatin at a dosage of 10 mg. To be more clear about the efficacy of atorvastatin in patients with coronary artery disease compared to other statins, they should be performed in a larger population and with a longer follow up time
Information Literacy Service: SWOT Analysis
Abstract Purpose - Information Literacy (IL) has nowadays a primary and substantial role within Academic Libraries worldwide. Aiming to respond to the new trends of education that the information society calls for, the Central Library of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) has developed the Service “Information Literacy Workshops”. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of an Information Literacy (IL) Service in the context of a Hellenic Academic Library, by discussing the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats that this project’s team encountered. Design/methodology/approach – Five IL workshop cycles took place in the NTUA Central Library. The first cycle was addressed to the NTUA library staff, endeavouring to establish a “learning organization” culture; three cycles were addressed to the NTUA graduate students and one cycle to post-graduate students. Each IL workshop cycle was designed, implemented and evaluated after consideration, study and adaptation of the international IL standards and strategies, as well as of four learning theories (Behaviorism, Social/Cognitive Behaviorism, Cognitivism and Constructivism) and by utilizing services and tools developed in the past by HEAL-Link within the framework of the Program “Digital Convergence”.Findings - The library, as part of an interconnected academic ecosystem, and especially because the volume of data available on the Internet is shockingly high and constantly increasing, should evolve and enhance its viability mainly through its intra and extra-institutional collaborations and through its active involvement in the curriculum design with a vision to establish an “information literacy” culture. Originality/value – This paper enhances academic librarians’ understanding of an IL Service’s development in three ways: firstly, by narrating a real story with failures and successes and thus offering the chance to reflect upon them; secondly, by deepening in this project’s design, implementation and evaluation; thirdly, by proposing better practices that could urge Hellenic Academic Libraries to create from scratch their own IL Service or to develop their existed one further.
The COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on mental health
Introduction: The disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 infection since its outbreak in China in the end of 2019, turned into a pandemic after having reached over 7,834 confirmed cases and 170 deaths worldwide by the end of January 2020. Purpose: The purpose of the current article is to present how SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), MERS (Middle East syndrome) and COVID-19 pandemics affected the mental health of different population subgroups and also to present the determinants of mental illness, in an attempt to understand their negative psychological effects. Material- Methodology: The methodology that was followed in this paper was the review of the international bibliography on the Pubmed, Scopus και Google Scholar on the subject of mental health during pandemics and the presentation of the wide range of psychosocial needs that emerged during the SARS, MERS and COVID-19 pandemics. Results: The conclusions derived from the first literature research on the mental health of different target groups during the COVID-19 pandemic are comparable to those that emerged during the previous two major pandemics. Therefore, the pandemic has demonstrated the necessity of timely mental health care by the immediate adoption of appropriate measures and the implementation of interventions that will be based on the different needs of the population. Conclusions: Although the Greek government took timely measures against the spread of the virus, published research efforts regarding the mental health outcomes within the Greek population, are still in their infancy. At this critical time, mental health assessment and evaluation should be a priority for health authorities in their way to managing psychological crises due to a pandemic
LIS education and cultural heritage information management
Purpose - It has been more than two decades that LIS Education has been regarding information organizations (libraries, archives and museums) as an integrated field sharing a common basis of acquiring, handling and disseminating information independently of its source or substrate. In this respect LIS curriculum has treated resources at the basis of their descriptive, structural and administrative metadata; their semantic value; and the employment of technology as the means for creating a common platform for its organization, accessing and dissemination purposes.Design/methodology/approach - Within this framework, LIS curriculum has expanded in order to meet the informational needs of cultural heritage institutions, such as museums and cultural centers. Furthermore, their requisites to create the fundamentals for their digital information management and digital presence in the web and their obligations to supply information and communicate with each other became also part of the curriculum. The latter introduced almost simultaneously the need to operate in common environment with archives and libraries that not only hold a significant amount of related information but also have common operational attributes. The latter has brought forward issues of interoperability, communication between metadata standards, the use of controlled vocabularies and semantic representation techniques. All of the above, have established the notion in LIS Education that libraries, archives and museums are a global network of information organizations. At the same time, a series of cultural heritage projects, funded through the Horizon2020 call were focusing on employing new technologies for staging cultural heritage content. The need for metadata and semantics had acquired the expertise of information professionals. In this paper the case of the curriculum reform of the Department of Archives, Library and information Studies of the University of West Attica is presented and the specific interrelationship of the Horizon2020 Project “CrossCult" in which the aforementioned Department participated, is viewed as a parameter for shaping a cluster of courses within its curriculum
