Theta activity supports landmark-based correction of naturalistic human path integration

No full text
International audienceHow do humans integrate landmarks to update their spatial position during active navigation? Using immersive virtual reality and high-density mobile EEG, we investigated the neural underpinnings of landmark-based recalibration during path integration in freely moving male and female humans. Participants navigated predefined routes, indicated the start position to quantify accumulated errors, and once per route corrected their estimate using a visual landmark. Our findings reveal that homing error accumulated along the course of navigation, but a briefly presented intra-maze landmark effectively corrected accumulated errors. However, this effect was transient and less pronounced when participants were highly confident in their self-motion-based spatial representation suggesting that internal priors can hinder the assimilation of novel spatial cues. Theta activity in the retrosplenial complex supported the realignment of internal spatial representations by anchoring self-motion-derived estimates to visual landmark cues. Increased theta power and phase resetting upon landmark presentation accompanied subtle corrections, supporting a smooth realignment of spatial representations, whereas diminished synchronization marked the need for more extensive spatial updating. In addition, we identified motor-related theta response that scaled with rotational acceleration. Taken together, these findings highlight the dual role of theta oscillations in flexibly integrating multimodal signals, supporting both the recalibration of spatial representations to external cues and the encoding of self-motion information during naturalistic human navigation. Significance Statement Spatial navigation depends on the continuous integration of internally generated self-motion cues with external environmental landmarks to construct and maintain spatial representations. Despite its central role in adaptive behavior, the neural dynamics underlying this intermodal integration in humans remain unclear. Using noninvasive mobile EEG with immersive virtual reality, we identify a dynamic mechanism within the retrosplenial complex that realigns internal and external spatial representations based on visual landmarks during naturalistic navigation. This process is mediated by theta-band activity, which not only supports visuo-spatial realignment but also encodes vestibular signals. These dual theta signatures demonstrate how the human brain flexibly integrates multimodal information to update spatial representations, highlighting theta oscillations as a unifying neural substrate for both perceptual and motor components of navigation

Estimating the Young modulus of cables material in cable-driven parallel robots

No full text
International audienceCable wear in cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) is a major concern regarding the safety of end-users for assistance applications or for preventive maintenance in industrial applications. To estimate this wear we propose to calibrate the Young modulus of the material of each cable, that is affected by the wear, using an approach based on the partial measurements of the platform pose at specific calibration poses. These measurements may be used to identify the Young modulus either with a deterministic algorithm or with a neural network with 2 variants. The deterministic method is more accurate and robust with respect to uncertainties but is computer intensive while the neural network is less accurate and robust but is almost real time.</div

Great Balls of FIRE IV. The contribution of massive star clusters to the astrophysical population of merging binary black holes

No full text
International audienceThe detection of over a hundred gravitational wave signals from double compacts objects have confirmed the existence of such binaries with tight orbits. Two main formation channels are generally considered to explain the formation of these merging binary black holes (BBHs): the isolated evolution of stellar binaries, and the dynamical assembly in dense environments, namely star clusters. Although their relative contributions remain unclear, several analyses indicate that the detected BBH mergers probably originate from a mixture of these two distinct scenarios. We study the formation of massive star clusters across time and at a cosmological scale to estimate the contribution of these dense stellar structures to the overall population of BBH mergers. To this end, we propose three different models of massive star cluster formation based on results obtained with zoom-in simulations of individual galaxies. We apply these models to a large sample of realistic galaxies identified in the (22.1 Mpc)3(22.1\ \mathrm{Mpc})^3 cosmological volume simulation \firebox. Each galaxy in this simulation has a unique star formation rate, with its own history of halo mergers and metallicity evolution. Combined with predictions obtained with the Cluster Monte Carlo code for stellar dynamics, we are able to estimate populations of dynamically formed BBHs in a collection of realistic galaxies. Across our three models, we infer a local merger rate of BBHs formed in massive star clusters consistently in the range 110 Gpc3yr11-10\ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3}\mathrm{yr}^{-1}. Compared with the local BBH merger rate inferred by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Collaboration (in the range 17.944 Gpc3yr117.9-44\ \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3}\mathrm{yr}^{-1} at z=0.2z=0.2), this could potentially represent up to half of all BBH mergers in the nearby Universe. This shows the importance of this formation channel in the astrophysical production of merging BBHs

Dimensional Control of the Coherence Time of Scattered Light in Cold Atom Clouds

No full text
Cold atomic clouds are promising platforms for generating correlated photons, but multiple scattering and associated Doppler broadening limit their temporal coherence. Here we demonstrate that cloud geometry provides a powerful means to extend the coherence time of scattered light. In the experiment, intensity-correlation measurements show that an elongated (quasi-1D) cloud exhibits systematically longer coherence times than a spherical (3D) cloud of the same on-axis optical thickness, as a direct consequence of the suppression of multiple scattering in the elongated geometry. Random-walk simulations reproduce this trend and further show that elongation drives the coherence time toward the single-scattering limit. The combined results establish cloud geometry as a robust control parameter for temporal coherence in cold-atom ensembles, with potential applications in quantum optics and communication

Sparsity-based regularization for learning over multitask graphs

No full text
International audienceIn this work, we consider learning over multitask graphs, where each agent seeks to estimate its own parameter vector (task) while benefiting from collaboration with its neighboring agents with related tasks. A key method for promoting relationships between tasks is regularization. Unlike previous studies that enforce graph smoothness via graph-based smooth regularization, we investigate non-smooth regularization to promote sparsity and piecewise-constant transitions between tasks at neighboring agents. We formulate a globally regularized optimization problem and, motivated by the forward-backward splitting approach, we propose a decentralized approach for solving the non-smooth optimization problem. Then, under some general convexity assumptions on the individual costs and regularization, we study the convergence w.r.t. the optimal solution of the globally regularized cost, in the mean-square-error sense. Finally, we illustrate the theoretical findings and the effectiveness of the proposed approach through simulations

Quantization vs Pruning: Insights from the Strong Lottery Ticket Hypothesis

No full text
Quantization is an essential technique for making neural networks more efficient, yet our theoretical understanding of it remains limited. Previous works demonstrated that extremely low-precision networks, such as binary networks, can be constructed by pruning large, randomly-initialized networks, and showed that the ratio between the size of the original and the pruned networks is at most polylogarithmic. The specific pruning method they employed inspired a line of theoretical work known as the Strong Lottery Ticket Hypothesis (SLTH), which leverages insights from the Random Subset Sum Problem. However, these results primarily address the continuous setting and cannot be applied to extend SLTH results to the quantized setting. In this work, we build on foundational results by Borgs et al. on the Number Partitioning Problem to derive new theoretical results for the Random Subset Sum Problem in a quantized setting. Using these results, we then extend the SLTH framework to finite-precision networks. While prior work on SLTH showed that pruning allows approximation of a certain class of neural networks, we demonstrate that, in the quantized setting, the analogous class of target discrete neural networks can be represented exactly, and we prove optimal bounds on the necessary overparameterization of the initial network as a function of the precision of the target network

No full text
Background: early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) enhances physiological stability, comfort, neurobehavioral maturation, and parental bonding in preterm infants. However, when an umbilical venous catheter (UVC) is in place, SSC is often restricted due to concerns about catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) or mechanical complications – particularly when the insertion site is not covered by an occlusive dressing. Methods: we conducted a single-center prospective observational study (2017-2020) in the level III neonatal intensive care unit of Nice University Hospital, France. The aim was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of early SSC in preterm infants with an UVC using a fixation protocol without an occlusive dressing. The primary outcome was the incidence of CRBSIs from insertion to 48 hours after catheter removal. Secondary outcomes included feasibility, catheter dislodgement, umbilical bleeding, thermal stability, and neonatal comfort. Results: 95 preterm infants (< 37 weeks) were included (median gestational age: 30 weeks [27-33], median birth weight: 1070 g [920-1410]). The CRBSI incidence was 5.3% (8.99 per 1000 UVC-days), consistent with published rates. No catheter dislodgement occurred, and only one minor, asymptomatic umbilical bleed was reported. All SSC sessions were conducted by a two-person care team, ensuring continuous insertion-site monitoring and preventing accidental traction, within a thermoregulated, low-stimulation environment. Feasibility was high (97.9%), although only 28.4% received SSC within 24 hours of birth. Comfort, assessed with Neonatal pain and discomfort scale and COMFORT-B scores, improved significantly in spontaneously breathing infants (p: 0.0437) and remained stable in intubated and sedated neonates. Conclusion: early SSC in preterm infants with UVC – without an occlusive dressing – is both safe and highly feasible, with infection and mechanical complication rates comparable to the literature. This approach supports developmental care, strengthens parent-infant bonding, and aligns with zero-separation policies in neonatal care.

Let’s DOIT: Using Intel’s Extended HW/SW Contract for Secure Compilation of Crypto Code

No full text
International audienceIt is a widely accepted standard practice to implement cryptographic software so that secret inputs do not influence the cycle count. Software following this paradigm is often referred to as “constant-time” software and typically involves following three rules: 1) never branch on a secret-dependent condition, 2) never access memory at a secret-dependent location, and 3) avoid variable-time arithmetic operations on secret data. The third rule requires knowledge about such variable-time arithmetic instructions, or vice versa, which operations are safe to use on secret inputs. For a long time, this knowledge was based on either documentation or microbenchmarks, but critically, there were never any guarantees for future microarchitectures. This changed with the introduction of the data-operand-independent-timing (DOIT) mode on Intel CPUs and, to some extent, the data-independent-timing (DIT) mode on Arm CPUs. Both Intel and Arm document a subset of their respective instruction sets that are intended to leak no information about their inputs through timing, even on future microarchitectures if the CPU is set to run in a dedicated DOIT (or DIT) mode.In this paper, we present a principled solution that leverages DOIT to enable cryptographic software that is future-proof constant-time, in the sense that it ensures that only instructions from the DOIT subset are used to operate on secret data, even during speculative execution after a mispredicted branch or function return location. For this solution, we build on top of existing security type systems in the Jasmin framework for high-assurance cryptography. We then use our solution to evaluate the extent to which existing cryptographic software built to be “constant-time” is already secure in this stricter paradigm implied by DOIT and what the performance impact is to move from constant-time to future-proof constant-time
