The unacknowledged status of applied ornament in contemporary architecture
In the 19th century, Fergusson defined architecture as “the art of ornamental and ornamented construction,” a theory that remains relevant today. Historically, ornamentation has been central to architectural discourse, from Renaissance notions to the stark minimalism of Modernism and the symbolic décor of Postmodernism. Today, it continues to be a critical focus in architectural theory, though contemporary discourse often treats ornament as an intrinsic architectural feature where ornament and structure are inseparable. This view, that pursues the design principles of Modernism, overlooks the prevalence of applied ornament, which, though less discussed, is equally significant in practice. Within this context, this paper builds upon a binary framework to understand contemporary ornamentation: intrinsic (integral to the building) and applied (added onto the building). Despite the contemporary preference for intrinsic ornament, applied ornament remains widespread in architectural practice, indicating a need for a reassessment of its theoretical framework. Delineating the approaches and illustrating related concepts such as patterns and digitalization, the study aims to comprehend applied ornament’s role and challenge the perception that integrated ornament is the only legitimate form through the examination of contemporary projects. This re-evaluation seeks to deepen the understanding of ornamentation’s status, encouraging further theoretical exploration of applied ornament. © 2025 Universidad Politecnica de Valencia. Investigating the means utilized by the supporting staff in design studio courses: An interview study
The teaching and learning of design is grounded in studio education. The pedagogical dynamics of design studio education is also related to the social learning theories stemming from the dialogue between the interaction of teachers and students. When we deep dive into these participants, we can come across the supporting staff taking part in the design studio courses. They are actively involved in the pedagogical practice, which has a direct influence on design students' learning processes. More specifically, supporting staff in Turkey, called research assistants, are influential players of the education system and have a great responsibility in design studio education. Their pedagogical impacts on students' learning process are crucial but neglected in design literature. To understand their pedagogical means in design studio education, an interview study was conducted with 26 volunteer research assistants. The findings show that various means can be preferred and utilized by supporting staff in the design studio for different purposes. As descriptive research, this chapter discusses the means in a pedagogical manner
Conceptual problems in the body-space conceptualizations in A Cyborg Manifesto in the context of Sartori’s conceptual analysis
A Cyborg Manifesto, one of the key texts of posthumanist theory, is frequently referenced in research across various fields such as science, philosophy, art, and design. The authors of this study suggest that some research using A Cyborg Manifesto as a methodological tool to ensure scientific validity may encounter challenges due to the way certain concepts within the text are formulated. With this in mind, the study focuses on architectural research that engages with the manifesto, based on the idea that conceptual inconsistencies in a source may lead to limitations in establishing scientific validity. Accordingly, the research examines how concepts are constructed within the body-space conceptualizations in the manifesto, with the hypothesis that these concepts may not have been formulated accurately. Giovanni Sartori’s method of conceptual misformation is applied, analyzing a specific argument from the manifesto’s body-space conceptualizations where conceptual inconsistencies are identified. In this analysis, issues of conceptual stretching and conceptual confusion are observed. By emphasizing the importance of clear and consistent conceptual use in architectural research, this study aims to contribute to the broader discourse on scientific knowledge production. © 2025 The Author(s). Reduced-Calorie Apricot-Based Lacto-Fermented Beverages: Evaluation of Probiotic Content, Physicochemical, and Sensory Properties
Optimizing the formulation is essential to enhance probiotic viability, sensory quality, and shelf-life stability, thereby supporting the development of a consumer-acceptable and commercially viable non-dairy functional beverage. This study focused on optimizing the fermentation process of apricot-based beverages using three probiotic strains: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum XL963 (LP), Limosilactobacillus fermentum W8 (LF), and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus ML104 (LPN). Fermentation conditions were optimized by varying sugar content (9–15%) and fermentation temperatures (20◦C, 28.5◦C, and 37◦C) to maximize sensory properties, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts, and probiotic viability over 60 days of storage. Following fermentation optimization, beverageswithacaloriereductionexceeding30%wereidentified,andtheirphysicochemicalpropertieswereevaluatedthroughout the refrigerated storage period for 60 days. LABcountsincreasedupto5–6logunits(11.39±0.85–14.69±0.40colony-formingunits (CFU)/mL) during fermentation, rising from initial levels (9.04 ± 0.36–9.08 ± 0.84 log CFU/mL). Throughout the 10-day storage period, viable LAB populations were maintainedabovethecritical threshold of 106 CFU/mL,withcountsrangingfrom9.13±0.05 to 13.80 ± 0.06 log CFU/mL during storage, as determined by the spread plate method. Calorie reductions ranged from 24.48% to 59.49%, depending on fermentation temperature, sugar content, and the probiotic strain used. The overall sensory acceptability scores of the LF, LP, and LPN samples—fermented under varying sugar concentrations (9–15%) and fermentation temperatures (20◦C, 28.5◦C, and 37◦C)—ranged between 3.34 and 7.60, based on the average values obtained immediately after fermentation and following 10 days of refrigerated storage. Significant changes (p < 0.05) were observed in physicochemical properties, with soluble solids content between 20.73 ± 0.17 and 23.87 ± 0.06, pH values from 3.88 ± 0.01 to 4.28 ± 0.01, and dry matter content between 22.45 ± 0.02% and 26.01 ± 0.37%. Turbidity values ranged from 0.057 ± 0.002 to 0.176 ± 0.0012, while L*, a*,andb* values ranged from28.45±0.08to34.12±0.56,1.06±0.04to3.43±0.16,and11.36±0.16to18.47±0.24,respectively. Thecolordifference (ΔE*) ranged from 0.22 to 16.98, with the highest values observed at the beginning of storage. During the 60-day storage period, apricot beverages containing 12% added sugar and fermented with LF, LP, LPN, and the mix culture (LF + LP + LPN) maintained favorable sensory scores, with values ranging between 6.27 ± 0.82 and 7.18 ± 1.17 for taste, 5.85 ± 0.80 and 7.09 ± 0.60 for color and appearance, 5.82 ± 0.80 and 7.00 ± 0.77 for texture, 6.00 ± 0.83 and 7.00 ± 0.70 for smell, and 6.00 ± 0.65 and 7.00 ± 1.00 for overall acceptability. In conclusion, this study successfully developed reduced-calorie, probiotic-rich, and sensorially acceptable apricot-based beverages, providing a promising functional drink for consumers
Inteligencia artifıcial en el contexto del fotorrealismo en la visualización arquitectónica
This paper discusses the integration of artificial intelligence technology with architectural visualization. This research attempts to test the claim that in 2024, the integration of architectural visualization with artificial intelligence applications can create more realistic reference images for representative reference images than rendering programs. Images created with selected rendering engines and images created with artificial intelligence are compared and tabulated based on the scores given by architects to the specified criteria. According to the results, artificial intelligence is not yet able to render the given reference model at the expected level. Although artificial intelligence technology is still below expectations in this field, the results it gives in short periods of time can be useful from time to time. This research is important in terms of creating an environment for discussion on the potential advantages that artificial intelligence will bring to the field of architectural visualization and providing a perspective on this with the comparison made
Application of adaptive harmony search and machine learning on optimization problems about strength of materials
In structural design, the strength of materials is the key factor in design and applications including optimization covers the strength of material theory in design. The constraints are generally related to the strength of the material for different types of stress that occur under various external loading. The number of design problems using metaheuristics in the subject is high and these problems are generally used as benchmark examples in structural optimization. In this chapter, adaptive harmony search is presented for these problems and multiple cases of these problems are solved to obtain machine learning data. Then, artificial intelligence models that predict optimum results without a rerun of the iterative optimization process are generated. The models used are compared with performance metrics. These performance metrics are Coefficient of determination (R2), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE) and Mean Square Error (MSE). When the success of all regression models was analysed, it was seen that the model with the highest R2 (0.9994) and the low error values was Random Forest. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
Independent and active mobility of children in a car-free environment: insights from Büyükada Island
Supporting children’s active and independent mobility in cities, creating walkable and car-free spaces, reducing and slowing down traffic are considered among the basic steps in creating child-friendly environments as they support children’s physical and mental well-being. This study explores children’s mobility in a car-free space to understand the effects of independent mobility on the perception of space. Büyükada in Istanbul defines a unique alternative due to its car-free living environment and offers a child-friendly environment and a significant potential to support freedom of movement. In this context, using ‘mind mapping’ methodology, a recognized visual thinking tool for structuring abstract thoughts, children’s spatial perceptions and freedom of movement were explored through the drawn and written expressions of 20 10-year-old students living and studying in Büyükada. The paper discusses the findings of the fieldwork in this car-free settlement on children’s active and independent mobility patterns and their promising potential for developing child-friendly urban policies. The findings show that living in a car-free environment enables children to have independent mobility, enabling them to connect with nature and the urban space in which they live and to develop socio-spatial ties with the communit
Revisiting mortality in acromegaly using machine learning
Objective
To evaluate predictors of mortality in acromegaly using machine learning (ML) models.
Methods
We analyzed 607 patients with acromegaly. A grid search was applied to compare five types of prediction models in 1,200 configurations. Each model predicted mortality based on 40 disease characteristics, assessed using the Matthews’ correlation coefficient (MCC) and the area under the curve (AUC) metrics. To ensure robust and reliable predictions, we constructed a virtual ensemble model by generating 100 Explainable Boosting Machine (EBM) variants and evaluating their performance across 50 random train–test splits.
Results
The single EBM model fitted to all data achieved an MCC of 0.88 and an AUC of 0.99. Feature importance analysis identified hypertension, first-line transsphenoidal surgery (TSS), disease duration, baseline insulin-like growth factor 1 levels, hypopituitarism, and repeat TSS as key predictors of mortality. A virtual ensemble prediction model showed good generalization performance, with an MCC of 0.64 ± 0.08 and an AUC of 0.96 ± 0.015 across 50 random data splits. 58% of the cohort were female, and 66.9% had macroadenomas. The first-line treatment was TSS in 83.2% of cases. Additional treatments were repeat TSS (16.6%), somatostatin analogs (57%), cabergoline (35.6%), pegvisomant (10.9%), and radiotherapy (16.6%), achieving a 77.8% overall success rate. Hypertension (37.2%) and diabetes (36.4%) were the most common comorbidities. The mortality rate was 8.4%, mainly from cardiovascular disease (41.2%) and cancer (21.6%).
Conclusion
ML demonstrated strong performance in classifying survival status and identifying mortality predictors in acromegaly. The ensemble model provides a reliable and interpretable tool, balancing accuracy with the robustness required for clinical decision-making.
