    No full text
Debates over the years, have favored the assumption that individuals who engage in substance abuse have high proclivity to demonstrate antisocial behaviours as direct consequence of substance abuse. But with increase in different psychotropic substances and reports of wide spread substance abuse, this study attempted to revisit youth substance abuse with the hope of ascertaining the current nature of substances they abuse, the extent to which they abuse it, how the abuse relates to their antisocial behaviours, the consequences of the above on them, the challenges associated with the mitigation/control of youth drug abuse and measures that could be adopted to address the phenomenon of youth drug abuse and antisocial behaviours. The study is anchored on containment theory and based its analysis on quantitative data obtained from randomly selected sample of five hundred and ninety-four (594) youth, and qualitative data obtained from purposively selected nine (9) interviewees. Data collected using questionnaire were coded and analyzed with SPSS Version 21 for descriptive and inferential result, while the qualitative responses were transcribed and analyzed to provide in-depth insights, using direct quotes and illustrations. The study found a significant positive correlation between the extent of substance use and degree of indulgence in antisocial behaviours. Property related antisocial behaviours like theft, armed robbery and vandalism were all found to relate with different forms of substance abuse. Measures like youth empowerment, access to counselling services, public sensitization, police border patrol, and increasing the cost of regularly abused substances could be improved to reduce youth drug abuse

This study which is on perspectives and theories in Sociology, discussed the various paradigms and theories in the sociological enterprise and affirmed that perspectives and theories are nets neatly cast to catch what people perceive as the real world: to rationalize, explain, embellish and master it. It argued that theories also create a clear picture of the real world, to make it finer. Sociology, theory, sociological theory, sociological perspective and models were some of the related concepts examined in the study. Macro, middle-range and micro sociological theories were also clearly distinguished. The study majorly engaged in a critical analysis of various perspectives and theories such as evolutionism, functionalism, structuralism, conflict (Marxism), ethnomethodology and phenomenology, among others. Theories and perspectives and their various points of convergent and divergence were further interrogated. The study concludes that different perspectives and theoretical debates should be encouraged in academic sociology, as such divergent views and debates have the capacity to enhance the growth of scientific sociology

Changes have continued to take place in the marriage process given the proportion that is considered married as well as living arrangements after marriage in Nigeria. However, systematic documentation of these changes has been scanty. This study examined the prevalence and socioeconomic predictors of couples in commuter unions in Nigeria. Data was obtained from a nationally representative sample of 8,079 couples from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey.  Descriptive statistics and multinomial logistic regression were used for the data analysis.  The results show that 47% of couples in Nigeria are commuters. In 30%, males alone commute, and women commute alone in about 10%, whereas both commute in 7%. The likelihood of being in a union where only the man commutes decreases significantly when the woman is aged 25-29 and 35-39. The probability that the woman commutes alone significantly increases when the woman has attained secondary and higher education. The likelihood that both partners commute increases significantly when both the man and woman have attained secondary and higher education, work in clerical/services and sales occupations and are living together (not legally married). The results indicate a need for policy reform and initiatives to address the needs of commuting couples in Nigeria, expand job opportunities, diversify the location of industries, and invest more in transportation infrastructure to lessen the commuting burden of couples in Nigeria

This paper examined the traditional method of crime control and the reintegration of repentant offenders in Fulani communities of Jigawa State, Nigeria. Specifically, it examined the traditional process of reintegrating repentant offenders and the successes of this traditional method of crime control. The Reintegrative Shaming theory was adopted as theoretical framework. The study population consisted of the Fulani, Fulani traditional leaders, Pulaaku committee members and repentant offenders. Cluster, availability and purposive sampling techniques were used and 1,075 respondents were selected as the sample population. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques were deployed for this study. While questionnaire was administered on the Fulani respondents, in-depth interviews were conducted with repentant cattle rustlers, Pulaaku committee members and Fulani traditional leaders. The quantitative data generated from the survey were analysed using percentages, frequency distributions while the qualitative data complemented the quantitative data. Findings revealed that the reintegration of repentant offenders required traditional processes, involving rituals and oath taking. The activities of the members of the Pulaaku committee culminated in the repentance of many offenders and the reduction of criminal activities in Fulani communities. The study recommends a further study to ascertain the fate of the victims of crimes and the impact of this traditional mechanism of reintegration as well as the sustenance of the efforts of the Pulaaku committee in controlling criminal activities in the study area

This paper examined the need to integrate Internet of Things (IoT) technologies into Nigeria's education system to help close digital divides between Nigeria and her advanced counterpart countries. The benefits, opportunities and challenges for integration of IoT were explored through the lenses of constructionism, connectivism and activity models. Possible technical, pedagogical, financial and social barriers that would face large-scale IoT adoption in schools were examined. To overcome these obstacles, the paper also examined the blended strategies including specialized learning hubs, cloud-sourcing models, mentorship networks, and crowd-computing. Collectively, these approaches could empower leveraging IoT for transformative, project-based connected learning through participatory knowledge-building. Potential navigational tactics were reviewed like contextualized training, activity groups for continual connections, and public-private partnerships to share infrastructure costs. The paper concluded that by guiding implementation with established theoretical models while pursuing innovative technical, economic and social strategies tailored to the local context, noting that Nigeria can successfully overcome barriers to leveraging Internet of Things for advancing 21st century teaching and learning outcomes. However, the paper also acknowledged the need for further research. Areas suggested for future exploration included longitudinal case studies evaluating impact of different infrastructure deployment and financing options. Large-scale surveys were proposed to understand evolving teacher perception and ongoing support needs. Finally, comparative analyses with other developing economies’ IoT integration pathways and best practices could provide valuable insights for optimizing Nigeria’s approach

This study examined the dynamic evolution of Fulɓe (Fulani) kinship structures within Jigawa State, Nigeria. Jigawa State, located in northern Nigeria, is home to a diverse range of ethnic groups, in addition to the Fulɓe. Some of these ethnic groups include Zarma (Zabarmawa), Hausa, Kanuri, Bade, Ngizim, Gungawa, and so on. Some typologies of Fulɓe people in Jigawa State include Nomadic Fulɓe, Sedentary Fulɓe, Agro-pastoral Fulɓe, Fulɓe Traders, etc. The research employed qualitative methods by utilizing secondary sources such as documents and records, books, journals, and internet sources to collect data on the dynamic evolution of Fulɓe kinship structures within Jigawa State. The investigation draws on the social structure theory to comprehend the traditional Fulɓe kinship systems, elucidating their essential functions in maintaining stability and order within Jigawa State. The findings reveal that the evolution of Fulɓe kinship structures in Jigawa State is intricately linked to historical events such as colonialism, the spread of formal education, urbanization, economic transformations, and the assimilation of modern values. Consequently, Fulɓe kinship structures in Hadejia Emirate, Ringim, Dutse, Kazaure, Birnin Kudu, and Buji, in Jigawa State, exhibit a synthesis of traditional and modern influences by adapting to the changing societal landscape. This adaptation involves a shift towards an increased emphasis on individual choice, smaller nuclear families, more flexible kinship networks, and a heightened focus on individual accomplishments. In light of these findings, the study advocates for collaborative efforts between the government and Fulɓe communities in Jigawa State to formulate policies that are supportive of the distinctive kinship structures in the State
