The copula sendá in the revitalization of Palenquero Creole. Fresh evidence
This study provides a first description of the distribution of the copular items of the Spanish-lexified Creole Palenquero (San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia). Notably, besides the descriptions of the occurrence of the oppositional couple ta/é (and its variants era and jue), the distribution of the third and most innovative copula sendá (< Sp. sentar(se) ‘to sit’) has not yet been clarified. This study reveals that the distribution of the copulas é/jue/era ~ sendá is stratified by age. Although sendá has been recorded in previous traditional corpora with low frequency of occurrence, this paper demonstrates that young Palenquero speakers nowadays regularly select the copula sendá in both attributive and identificational equative copular constructions. Elderly traditional speakers prefer using the copulas é, jue, and era in this context. The change in usage is particularly prevalent among second language users of Palenquero who acquired it as part of language revitalization activities
Advancing treatment strategies for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: a systematic review on studies comparing ventricular and lumbo-peritoneal shunts
Idiopathic normal-pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) is characterized by the clinical triad of gait disturbance, cognitive decline, and urinary incontinence. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) diversion is the gold standard treatment. Despite ventriculo-peritoneal shunt (VPS) is more commonly used, lumbo-peritoneal shunt (LPS) offers a minimally invasive alternative, raising questions about their relative efficacy and safety. A systematic review was conducted on multiple databases with a two-step selection process in order to exclude studies with insufficient data, irrelevance, and lacking of comparative analysis between the two procedures. From the included studies we comparatively analyzed preoperative clinical-radiological characteristics, surgical details and clinical-radiological outcome. We included 6 studies matching out inclusion criteria. Both VPS and LPS improved functional and cognitive performance. VPS provided faster symptoms relief, but has been related with higher risks of infection, whereas LPS showed a safer profile but required more frequent revisions due to mechanical issues. VPS and LPS are both effective treatments for iNPH. The choice of intervention should be tailored on the individual patient risk profiles, resource availability, and surgical expertise. Future research should focus on standardizing assessment scores, solve controversies, and evaluate long-term outcomes
Association of language markers with future cognitive impairment and presence of limbic predominant age related TDP‐43 encephalopathy
INTRODUCTION: Accessible biomarkers for prediction of cognitive impairment and diagnosis of limbic predominant age related TDP-43 encephalopathy neuropathologic change (LATE-NC) are needed. METHODS: Written descriptions of the cookie-theft picture were produced by 134 participants of the Leisure World Cohort Study who subsequently joined the 90+ Study and underwent regular assessments and autopsy. We examined the relationships between linguistic markers and future cognitive impairment and the presence of neuropathologic changes. RESULTS: Mean age at writing was 85 and there was an average interval of 8 years to the development of cognitive impairment. Future cognitive impairment was associated with less grammatical units, fewer clauses, and fewer pictorial themes. LATE-NC was the only neuropathologic change associated with language markers, including higher proportions of content words, less complete units, and more closed class word errors. DISCUSSION: Our results suggest that linguistic markers obtained long before the development of cognitive impairment might serve as biomarkers for future cognitive impairment and LATE-NC. Highlights: We analyzed the writing samples of 134 participants in the Leisure World Cohort Study who later joined the 90+ Study and had longitudinal assessments and came to autopsy. We found that features extracted from these writing samples differed between participants who died with cognitive impairment and those who died with normal cognition. Of note, participants who developed cognitive impairment were all cognitively normal at the time of writing of the samples and developed cognitive impairment on average 8 years later. We found a different set of features were related to the presence of limbic predominant age related TDP-43 encephalopathy (LATE) at post mortem. No features were related to either Alzheimer's disease neuropathology or Lewy body (LB) pathology
Rehabilitating rural landscapes: the recovery of rural earthen architecture for the sustainability and resilience of the alentejano rural landscape. An experimental educational project
The paper presents the scientific and educational outcomes of an international learning experience conducted in the summer of 2024 within the framework of a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP). The initiative focused on the recovery of traditional rural buildings for food production in the Alentejo region, located in southern Portugal. The project stems from the collaboration between the Centro de Estudios de Arquitectura y Urbanismo and the Centro de Inovação em Arquitectura e Modos de Habitar at the University of Porto.
The dwellings analysed in Alentejo, strategically located on hilltops (monte), historically served as territorial outposts, ensuring food supply and security. Today, however, many of these settlements are abandoned, leading to a loss of crop biodiversity and a decline in landscape quality. These buildings, once central to family life and the management of the productive landscape, are characterised by local materials, notably taipa (rammed earth), which provides both excellent thermal performance and a low environmental impact.
The workshop held in Odemira promoted the contemporary reuse of traditional architectures by integrating vernacular techniques with innovative approaches. The overarching goal is to rediscover the cultural, environmental, and identity value of these places as resources for the sustainable and resilient design of the territory
Textile Landscapes. Sustainable Narratives for the Enhancement of Inland Areas.
The article examines how textile design can enhance sustainability and territorial inclusion by focusing on local resources, circular models, and traditional textile methods, particularly in the context of wool production. It highlights the importance of using narratives that emphasize conscious craftsmanship and local enhancement to address the crisis in sheep farming and the undervaluation of Ital-ian wool. Regions rich in artisanal traditions and natural resources, such as the Ital-ian inland areas, can counteract economic, social, and environmental challenges by adopting communication strategies rooted in authenticity and environmental respect, as well as behavioural design approaches.
The contribution reflects on the narrative potential of the centre-south Italian region of Abruzzo and its long-standing history of sustainable textile production, particularly rich in tangible and intangible resources pertaining to the wool supply chain. By employing a historical methodological perspective, this paper seeks to showcase a tradition deeply embedded in the territory, and which today stands as an important identifying element for the local community. Genuine storytelling is highlighted as a tool to stimulate the local economy by enhancing the growth of local communities by preserving ancient traditions and biodiversity and fostering sustainable development that respects and upholds local cultural identities

Impact of cement cranioplasty on cerebrospinal fluid leaks after retrosigmoid craniotomy − A systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks and related complications (CLRC) are common after retrosigmoid approaches for cerebellopontine angle (CPA) surgeries. Bone cement cranioplasty (CCP) may provide additional sealing benefits over reconstruction without cement (RWC) in reducing these complications. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of CCP versus RWC in CPA surgery. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines was conducted using three databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science). Studies were included comparing CCP and RWC in retrosigmoid craniotomies/craniectomies for CPA pathologies. Primary outcomes were pseudo meningocele, external CSF leaks, and CLRC, while secondary outcomes included wound infection rates and rates of reoperation for wound problems. Results: Five retrospective studies were analyzed with 1,838 patients (931 CCP, 907 RWC). CCP significantly reduced the rates of pseudo meningocele (OR 0.264, CI 0.150–0.463), wound CSF leaks (OR 0.105, CI 0.028–0.399) and CLRC (OR 0.248, CI 0.078–0.794). In the CCP group, there were fewer wound infections (OR 0.310, CI 0.114–0.790) and lower reoperation rates (OR 0.189, CI 0.050–0.708). Conclusions: Cement cranioplasty is associated with a lower incidence of CSF leaks and related complications compared to RWC following retrosigmoid approaches for CPA pathology. CCP also reduces reoperations and wound infections. These findings support using CCP as an effective technique for lowering postoperative complications of retrosigmoid approaches
Catalyzing solar and wind technology exports: the «Flywheel Effect» of demand-side factors
The paper aims to emphasize the importance of demand-side factors in strengthening countries’ efforts to address the climate challenge through the export of solar and wind technologies. While the existing literature has predominantly focused on the supply side, we argue that the demand side has a direct effect and exerts an indirect influence (via the supply side) on the export of these technologies and their widespread adoption. This has implications for the current policy debate. To test our hypotheses, we use a Panel Vector Autoregressive model in first differences for a panel of 20 industrialized countries over a twenty-five-year period. The results reveal mixed support to the hypothesis that demand exerts a positive effect on the export of solar and wind technologies. While the evidence on the role energy intensity is robust across specifications, we observe that other measures of demand - such as the level economic activity and oil prices - positively impacts solar and wind technology exports primarily in the most advanced countries. Additionally, the findings broadly support the hypothesis that all demand factors indirectly influence the export of these technologies by bolstering supply-side effects
