    An in vivo "turning model" reveals new RanBP9 interactions in lung macrophages

    The biological functions of the scaffold protein Ran Binding Protein 9 (RanBP9) remain elusive in macrophages or any other cell type where this protein is expressed together with its CTLH (C-terminal to LisH) complex partners. We have engineered a new mouse model, named RanBP9-TurnX, where RanBP9 fused to three copies of the HA tag (RanBP9-3xHA) can be turned into RanBP9-V5 tagged upon Cre-mediated recombination. We created this model to enable stringent biochemical studies at cell type specific level throughout the entire organism. Here, we have used this tool crossed with LysM-Cre transgenic mice to identify RanBP9 interactions in lung macrophages. We show that RanBP9-V5 and RanBP9-3xHA can be both co-immunoprecipitated with the known members of the CTLH complex from the same whole lung lysates. However, more than ninety percent of the proteins pulled down by RanBP9-V5 differ from those pulled-down by RanBP9-HA. The lung RanBP9-V5 associated proteome includes previously unknown interactions with macrophage-specific proteins as well as with players of the innate immune response, DNA damage response, metabolism, and mitochondrial function. This work provides the first lung specific RanBP9-associated interactome in physiological conditions and reveals that RanBP9 and the CTLH complex could be key regulators of macrophage bioenergetics and immune functions.     Generalized fractal dimensions and gauges for self-similar sets and their application in the assessment of coherent conditional previsions and in the calculation of the Sugeno integral

    In this paper, we compute the generalized Hausdorff and packing dimensions of self-similar sets that meet the open set condition. We thoroughly characterize the class of Hausdorff gauges and generalized pre-packing gauges for a self-similar set A that satisfies the open set condition under certain criteria. We derive a more general necessary and sufficient condition for a gauge function to be a Hausdorff gauge for a set A, packing gauge, or pre-packing gauge. Additionally, we estimate the associated Hausdorff measures and packing pre-measures. Finally, we apply these results to assess coherent conditional provisions and to calculate the Sugeno integral with respect to the Lebesgue measure, of the generalized Hausdorff measures of some self-similar sets, such as the middle third Cantor set, the Sierpinsky carpet, and the Sierpinsky triangle. © 2025 Elsevier Lt

    Modeling surface tension of ten binary cryogenic mixtures with a thermodynamic method and artificial neural network

    The phase equilibrium calculations between the liquid and surface phase are conducted to predict the surface tension and interfacial mole fractions of the components for ten binary cryogenic systems. This thermodynamic model is combined with the perturbed chain statistical association fluid theory equation of state to determine the fugacity coefficients and molar volumes of the components. Based on the application of molar or partial molar volumes, 4 different strategies are applied to the molar surface area of this model. The results of the thermodynamic model indicate that the first strategy has the best predictions for most cases. Then an artificial neural network has been applied to the surface tension of these ten mixtures. This model contains four input parameters and 9 neurons with a single layer. The overall good predictive capability of the artificial neural network model is proved with an R2 of 0.999 and an AADγ% of 0.94 for the entire dataset

    Medical nutrition therapy in physiological pregnancy and in pregnancy complicated by obesity and/or diabetes: SID-AMD recommendations

    Proper nutrition is essential during pregnancy to ensure an adequate supply of nutrients to the foetus and adequate maternal weight gain. In pregnancy complicated by diabetes (both gestational and pre-gestational), diet in terms of both the intake and quality of carbohydrates is an essential factor in glycaemic control. Maternal BMI at conception defines the correct weight increase during gestation in order to reduce maternal-foetal complications related to hypo- or hyper-nutrition. The recommendations presented here, which are based on national and international guidelines and the most recently published data on nutrition in physiological pregnancy and pregnancy complicated by hyperglycaemia and/or obesity, are designed to help healthcare professionals prescribe suitable eating patterns to safeguard the health of the mother and the foetus

    Hydration in young water polo players: A bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) approach

    Purpose: This study aimed to assess hydration status before and after training using the bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) method. Design: Pre-post quasi-experimental designs. Method: Twenty-four young water polo players (mean age: 13.30 ± 0.55) underwent assessment for bioelectrical and anthropometric measurements before and after a water polo training session. Results: Most players fell within the 50 % percentile of the bioelectrical tolerance ellipses of the reference population. The BIA vector differed statistically between players who achieved growth peaks (PGA: T2 = 9.1, p = 0.013) and those who did not (GPNA, T2 = 28.9, p < 0.001) compared to the reference and also differed between them (T2 = 37.7, p < 0.001). After training, a decrease in body mass (BM) and BM adjusted for water intake (p = 0.0001) and changes in BIA variables (p < 0.05) were observed. BIVA also showed a significant pre-post vector migration in both GPA (T2 = 24.7; p < 0.001) and GNPA (T2 = 43.1; p < 0.001), characterized by a decrease in resistance and opposite reactance directions (T2 = 33.6, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Young water polo players exhibit a significant BM loss after training (∼2.5 %). Ad libitum water intake seems to partially compensate dehydration. The resistance reduction indicates that BIVA captured the compensation for dehydration resulting from fluid intake

    Social and Public Engagement of Historiographical Research on the University and Higher Education in Italy: New Paradigms and Perspectives

    Research into the history of the university and higher education in Italy has undergone several phases since the late 20th century. Particularly noteworthy is the shift from traditional studies focusing on the Medieval and Modern periods to those addressing the Contemporary era. This evolution has been driven by the intense activity of specialized research centers and groups, alongside the development of new sources and methods of analysis. Moreover, in line with one of the university’s most current and socially engaged roles, the so-called Third Mission, historiographical research has increasingly sought to define its core function within a broader societal context. This contribution therefore aims to highlight how, in recent years, universities have been analyzed not only for their historical development, but primarily in terms of their cultural, social, political and economic significance, and their relationships with local communities and frameworks. Recent studies have expanded the field beyond the traditional history of universities, addressing a range of significant educational topics, including gender issues, the history of youth associations, changes in teaching methodologies and teacher training. The latest phase of Italian university historiography, marked by strong social engagement, is also reflected in efforts to promote the historical, cultural and educational heritage of universities. Notably, growing attention has recently been paid to the heritage and activities of university museums. This has resulted in an increasing demand for workshops and events with an educational and outreach focus, capable of actively engaging not only the academic community but, more importantly, the wider public

    Assessing smartphone use while driving: A Real-Time Delphi study on risks and prevention strategies

    Smartphone use while driving represents a major public safety issue, significantly contributing to road accidents and fatalities. This study investigates the underlying factors influencing this behavior, focusing on the case of Italy, and evaluates potential prevention strategies. By adopting a participatory approach and real-time web surveys through the Real-Time Delphi method, the research engages both citizens and experts to gain a comprehensive understanding of the motivations behind smartphone use while driving and the existing regulatory shortcomings. Experts identify and propose a range of innovative countermeasures, including technological interventions, stricter legal enforcement, and behavioral strategies designed to curb this risky behavior. Citizens, in turn, assess the feasibility and perceived effectiveness of these measures, offering valuable insights into public attitudes and potential barriers to implementation. The findings highlight the persistent nature of distracted driving despite current regulations, indicating that legal frameworks alone are insufficient to fully address the issue. Instead, a multifaceted approach that combines enforcement, public education, and technological solutions is necessary to mitigate risks effectively. The innovation of this study contributes to the development of targeted policies and evidence-based interventions aimed at improving road safety in Italy and beyond
