Habermas, Dahrendorf, and the Discourse on Social Complexity in Contemporary Society
This paper critically examines the later works of Jürgen Habermas and Ralf Dahrendorf to answer the question: How can deliberative democratic theory and liberal sociology jointly inform solutions to rising inequality and democratic erosion in the era of hyper-globalization? By mapping points of convergence and divergence in their analyses of globalization, institutional crisis, and social solidarity, the paper offers a novel framework that integrates Habermas’s concept of the “public sphere” with Dahrendorf’s emphasis on institutional resilience. This original contribution demonstrates how combining these perspectives can guide policy proposals for revitalizing democratic participation and ensuring fairer wealth distribution in contemporary Western societies
Advanced characterization of sustainable exfoliating particles from food waste for facial scrub formulations and their in vivo evaluation
Public opinion is increasingly interested in environmental issues and the state of health of the planet. As the economic system continues to go through a process of continual change, the most important problem is to plan for a sustainable future. This research presents a well-defined experimental strategy for converting food waste into cosmetic products, particularly face scrub formulations, by employing, whenever possible, ingredients from natural sources. Food and agricultural waste, such as coffee grounds (CF), malt residue (TM), hop remnants (HS), pomegranate leftovers (WF and MF), and pomace (WP and WL), were used in this work as source products for creating mechanical cosmetic scrubbing. The samples were subjected to drying, grinding, and sieving to generate powders with varying grain sizes showing particles with diameters between 420 and 707 μm for CF, TM, WL, HS, and WF samples and 1000 μm for MF and WP samples. An optical microscope study determined every sieved fraction's size, shape, and surface properties. Following the assessment of powder wettability, the chosen samples were used as green exfoliating particles (GEP) to formulate lipogel-based facial scrubs. The lipogels were characterised by their physicochemical properties, microbial stability and in vivo efficacy. For all the formulations, a marked reduction in the sebum was observed at t30, which was only partially restored at t60. Results in the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) among all the formulations and at different time points confirmed that the skin barrier integrity is not affected by mechanical exfoliation, also encountering the volunteers' appreciation

Vorinostat impairs the cancer-driving potential of leukemia-secreted extracellular vesicles
Background: Leukemia-secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) carry biologically active cargo that promotes cancer-supportive mechanisms, including aberrant proliferative signaling, immune escape, and drug resistance. However, how antineoplastic drugs affect EV secretion and cargo sorting remains underexplored. Methods: Leukemia-secreted extracellular vesicles (EVs) were isolated by Differential UltraCentrifugation, and their miRNome and proteomic profiling cargo were analyzed following treatment with SAHA (Vorinostat) in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). The epigenetic modulation of leukemia-secreted EVs content on interesting key target molecules was validated, and their differential functional impact on cellular viability, cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and tumorigenicity was assessed. Results: SAHA significantly alters the cargo of Leukemia-derived EVs, including miR-194-5p and its target BCLAF1 (mRNA and protein), key regulators of Leukemia cell survival and differentiation. SAHA upregulates miR-194-5p expression while selective loading BCLAF1 into EVs, reducing the miRNA levels in the same compartment. Additionally, SAHA alters miRNA profile and proteomic composition associated with leukemic EVs, altering their tumor-supportive potential, with differential effects observed between AML and CML. Furthermore, in silico predictions suggest that these modified EVs may influence cell sensitivity to antineoplastic agents, suggesting a dual role for SAHA in impairing oncogenic signaling while enhancing therapeutic responsiveness. Conclusions: In conclusion, the capacity of SAHA to modulate secretion and molecular composition of Leukemia-secreted EVs, alongside its direct cytotoxic effects, underscores its potential in combination therapies aimed to overcoming refractory phenotype by targeting EV-mediated communication
Exploring preterm birth and low birth weight as environmental sensitivity factors: A scoping review of socio-emotional and cognitive developmental outcomes
Perinatal adversities, such as preterm birth and low birth weight, have traditionally been viewed as vulnerability factors. However, emerging evidence suggests that these conditions may also increase sensitivity to environmental exposures in a for-better-and-for-worse manner, consistent with the concept of Environmental Sensitivity (ES) and Differential Susceptibility theory. This scoping review examines whether preterm birth and low birth weight function as ES factors for socio-emotional and cognitive outcomes. We reviewed 134 studies published up to June 2024, identifying 20 that explored the interplay between birth condition and postnatal environmental variables. Evidence was mixed across Differential Susceptibility, Vantage Sensitivity, and Dual-risk models. Differential Susceptibility was more frequently observed in studies using observational methods and assessing the environment and outcomes early in life, while Dual-risk effects were often reported in studies relying on parent-report. Only a few studies identified Vantage Sensitivity, and these were primarily in samples of moderately preterm children. Future research leveraging secondary datasets and incorporating broader parental and infant variables—such as prenatal stress and infant temperament—could clarify the conditions under which perinatal adversities predict heightened environmental sensitivity. Such insights may inform tailored interventions aimed at supporting families facing preterm birth and low birth weight, promoting both recovery and flourishing developmental outcome

Developing stress-preventive management competencies: an evaluation of the mechanism and the process in a training experience
Purpose - Developing stress-preventive management behaviors is recommended to improve psychosocial working conditions and employee well-being. A learning and development intervention based on the UK "Management Competencies for Preventing and Reducing Stress at Work (MCPARS)" is effective for helping supervisors to develop a personal action plan for change. However, research is needed to understand the mechanism through which a satisfactory action plan is developed. Design/methodology/approach - A three-phase learning and development program based on the MCPARS framework was delivered to 50 supervisors in an Italian local health unit. We measured management competencies and development needs, the achievement of the intervention aims and two process variables. The Process Macro for SPSS was used to evaluate a moderated mediation model. Findings - Supervisors' self-awareness of their competencies fully mediated the relationship between understanding the importance of their managerial role and the development of a satisfactory action plan for change. Process variables contributed to better explaining the outcome. Originality/value - These findings suggest that the order in which the intervention components are delivered and participants' perceptions of the intervention are important. This knowledge is useful to inform the design and evaluation of future similar interventions
Early Chondrogenic Differentiation of Spheroids for Cartilage Regeneration: Investigation of the Structural and Biological Role of a Lactose-Modified Chitosan
Long-term solutions for cartilage repair after injury are currently being investigated, with most research aiming to exploit the regenerative and chondrogenic differentiation potential of stem-cell-based spheroids. The incorporation of the bioactive polymer CTL, a lactose-modified chitosan, into spheroids is a strategy to improve cell viability and accelerate type II collagen gene expression. In this work, the role of CTL in influencing the dynamics of spheroid formation and its interplay with cell membrane adhesion molecules (integrins and cadherins) and cytoskeletal components is elucidated. The results indicate that CTL is actively involved in the reorganization of cells into spheroids. An analysis of the effects of physical form of CTL (rehydrated polymer coating or polymer solution) in stimulating peculiar biological responses indicates that CTL matrix in spheroids facilitates an early phase of chondrogenic differentiation. Once the CTL matrix is included in spheroids, there is an increase in COL2A1 gene expression and matrix deposition, regardless of the initial physical form of CTL. Overall, these results contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of spheroid formation in the presence of the polymer and on its bioactive role in mesenchymal stem cell spheroids
