FedStenoNet: tackling domain shift in x-ray coronary angiography through a personalized federated detection framework

    No full text
Background and Objective: The automatic identification of coronary stenosis in x-ray coronary angiography (XCA) is hindered by the variability in imaging protocols and patient characteristics across different hospitals, leading to significant domain shifts. These challenges impact the ability of algorithms to generalize effectively across diverse clinical environments. This study aims to address these issues by proposing FedStenoNet, a personalized federated learning (PFL) framework tailored for enhanced stenosis detection. Methods: In place of a single global model, FedStenoNet shares only backbone weights across clients and customizes the model to each client’s specific data distribution. The framework also incorporates histogram matching to tackle inter-dataset variability and a novel test-time adaptation algorithm to mitigate intra-dataset variability. Results: Evaluation of FedStenoNet across three non-identical and independently distributed datasets (one released with this study) demonstrated an average F1-score of 50.82%. FedStenoNet shows promising diagnostic accuracy in a challenging domain, where achieving high performance has proven difficult. Conclusions: By managing domain shifts via FedStenoNet, this study sets a promising direction for future research, further supported by the release of one XCA dataset

Rice husk as raw material in the synthesis of analcime

    No full text
: Rice husk is an agricultural waste from rice milling and nowadays represents an important substitute of silica in synthesis protocols of industrial minerals. Synthesis of monomineralic powders of Analcime by rice husk is here achieved with the conventional hydrothermal method; an improvement in synthesis conditions compared to the past is achieved by lowering rice-husk calcination temperatures, synthesis temperatures, crystallization times and by avoiding aging times. Rice husk is subjected to calcination at the temperature of 550 °C and then mixed with NaOH and NaAlO2. The experiment is performed at environment pressure and 170 ± 0.1 °C for 77 h. Analcime is characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, infrared and Raman spectroscopy. Cell parameters and the amount of amorphous phase in the synthesis powders is described with quantitative phase analysis using the combined Rietveld and reference intensity ratio methods. The degree of purity of Analcime is calculated in 97,53% at 12 h. The results show that rice husk waste represents a good alternative silicon source, and it can be used to produce pure analcime crystals

Teachers’ Beliefs on the use of Digital Technologies at School: Text Mining of Open-Ended Questions

    No full text
In the era of digital plenitude, educational institutions face persistent challenges in aligning their strategies with technological advancements, adopting a learning-ecosystem perspective. Following the digital overload imposed by the pandemic, teachers consider technology integration indispensable, but their extensive use in schools has also triggered resistance attitudes. This study aims to explore teachers’ beliefs on the use of digital technologies in education, focusing on three main aspects: (1) the perceived effectiveness of digital tools, (2) their impact on learning, and (3) the challenges related to their integration in teaching practices. To achieve this, we analyze 898 open-ended responses, collected through a questionnaire concerning digital learning ecosystems. To automate the analysis of open-ended responses,we adopt a Structural TopicModel (STM). STM, an extension of the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling technique, integrates features from a correlated topic model and the sparse additive generative topic model. The underlying assumption of STM remains that the documents are based on a combination of topics. However, the model allows correlations between topic proportions, enabling exploration of how both the prevalence of topics and their associated content may vary based on covariates. The first results concern the identification of some themes that clearly fit with what the recent literature highlights, including the interplay issue of teacher training in technology; the possibility of clustering between digital education and early childhood, as well as the pressing teachers’ postures and attitudes according to their beliefs

This paper analyzes the contribution of Radoslav Petković’s novel Savršeno sećanje na smrt (Perfect Memory of Death) (2008) to the interpretation of Neoplatonism. The hypothesis that the main hero of the novel, the monk Philarion, is a person unknown to history, is an important factor in the transmission of the writings of the hermetic corpus and Plato’s dialogues from the East to the West, specifically to Italy. These are the writings that conditioned the development of humanism and the Renaissance and led to the flourishing of philosophy, literature, culture and science. In the complex and refined narrative structure, the character of the hero is formed by temporal processes related to his identity, and for whom metempsychosis enables defining the temporal image. A young man who becomes a monk in the Peloponnese has access to the writings of the tradition of Hermes Trismegistus and Plato, thus managing to enter the esoteric circle of the last great Byzantine philosopher, Gemistos Pliton. The novel Savršeno sećanje na smrt subtly shifts the historical focus from the famous Teacher and Judge Gemistos to the unknown Philarion, which provides a new angle of view and stimulating contextualization of this significant period of European cultural history
