Comprehensive chemical profiling, bioactivity evaluation, and computational modelling of various extracts from cleome ornithopodioides L
In this study, various extracts of Cleome ornithopodioides L.: n-hexane, dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EA), ethanol, 70% ethanol, and water (infusion) were used to examine the chemical profiles and biological activities of the plant. The characterisation of the compounds was carried out by HPLC coupled to ion trap mass spectrometry. Antioxidant activity was evaluated through six assays. Additionally, the enzyme inhibition activities of the extracts were tested against acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), tyrosinase, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase. The extracts showed varying levels of bioactive compounds, with the water (infused) (38.95 mg GAE/g) and the 70% ethanol (38.75 mg GAE/g) extracts having the highest total phenolics. The extracts primarily contained flavonoid glycosides (quercetin glycosides). The 70% ethanol extract exhibited the highest antioxidant activity as indicated by four assays (DPPH: 68.21 mg TE/g; ABTS: 193.48 mg TE/g; CUPRAC: 143.68; FRAP: 123.86 mg TE/g). The ethanol extract also showed significant inhibition of BChE (15.69 mg GALAE/g). This highlights their potential for future research into applications in health and medicine, where they could offer valuable therapeutic benefits
Digital technologies and circularity: trade-offs in the development of life cycle assessment
Purpose This research aims to develop a critical understanding of the employment of digital technologies (DTs) for LCA studies, outlining both the opportunities and challenges associated with circular strategies. Two research questions are thus addressed: (1) What circular loops and aspects are addressed when digital technologies are integrated in the development of a Life Cycle Inventory? (2) Which trade-offs are revealed in the integration of digital technologies in Life Cycle Inventory development addressing circularity along a life cycle? Methods This study is based on the problematisation approach, which critically examines existing assumptions in the LCA literature, structured into six principles: defining a domain of investigation, articulating and evaluating assumptions, developing alternative perspectives, involving the audience through qualitative interviews, and assessing the alternative assumptions. A systematic literature review (SLR) and semi-structured interviews with experts were conducted to explore these issues and suggest future research directions. Results and discussion It emerges that the DTs are mainly integrated in the Life Cycle Inventory phase capturing closing and narrowing loops, whereas a limited number of cases investigate slowing loops with different aspects investigated. However, even if DTs can facilitate and improve the trustworthiness of the inventory, they can also lead to an increase in complexity because more competencies are needed, it is more difficult to control data collection and elaboration, and more social interactions along the supply chain are needed. At the same time, DTs can reduce flexibility because further improvements are blocked, interfaces can be rigid to connect, and technical and normative updates can be more difficult to implement. Conclusions DTs improve the development of the Life Cycle Inventory phase, particularly in the context of the circular economy. However, they also introduce new complexities and challenges. The use of blockchain, digital twins, and IoT sensors, for instance, has significantly improved data transparency and traceability, which are critical for circular economy practices, but complexity and training requirements can limit their benefits, so careful consideration must be given to their implementation to maximise benefits and minimise drawbacks
Capturing Information About Multiple Sclerosis Comorbidity Using Clinical Interviews and Administrative Records: Do the Data Sources Agree?
Background/Objectives: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is often associated with comorbidities that affect clinical outcomes. Data on comorbidities can be sourced from self-reports, medical records, and administrative databases. The gold standard for collecting such data is prospective clinical collection, as in clinical trials, but this is not feasible in large epidemiological studies. This study aimed to assess the agreement between two data sources, clinical interviews and administrative records, identifying major comorbidities in people with MS (pwMS). Methods: We evaluated the agreement between clinical interview data and administrative records in pwMS enrolled at two sites (2021–2022). Seven comorbidities were investigated: depression, anxiety, diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disease, chronic lung disease, and hyperlipidemia. We used kappa (κ), sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values to assess agreement. Results: The frequency of comorbidities varied between the sources. Administrative data often underestimated hypertension, autoimmune diseases, hyperlipidemia, and anxiety, but over-reported depression. It had high sensitivity for diabetes (80%) and moderate sensitivity for hypertension (62%). The agreement for diabetes (κ = 98.9%, PABAK = 0.98, positive agreement = 83.3%) and hypertension (κ = 89.8%, PABAK = 0.80, positive agreement = 70.8%) was high. Conclusions: The agreement between administrative data and clinical interviews was excellent for diabetes and hypertension. For other conditions, such as psychiatric, hyperlipidemia, and autoimmune comorbidities, administrative data had lower sensitivity, and often under-reported or misclassified the data

In Maximus the Greek's lexical use in his works composed in Church Slavonic we can see a constant focus on the Greek language, including its lexical baggage. A group of lemmas in Poslanie moskovskomu velikomu knjazju Vasiliju III ob afonskich monastyrjach (Letter to the Grand Prince of Moscow Vasilij III on the monasteries of Mount Athos), defining the eight main monastic services that order the life of the cenobia on the Holy Mountain, is of interest in this context.
The essay aims to contextualise the use of the aforementioned words within the framework of the more general consideration for the Greek language manifested in the author's writings, investigating their circulation in the Church Slavonic literacy prior to the Athonite monk's works, in order to establish whether their appearance in the text under analysis is to be considered innovative and in what a sense, and verifying the survival of the entries in the literature of the mid-16th to mid-18th century. Particular attention is devoted to the presence of words in the azbukovniki (abbecedari) of the mid- to late-16th century, confirming the lexical enrichment of Slavonic implemented by Maximus. In the second instance, the aim of the investigation is to advance the methodology of analysing the author's lexicon, including verifying the usefulness of the portal oldlexicons.ru (http://oldlexicons.ru)
Technological innovation in the conservation of architectural and historical heritage: digital twins for the preservation of Marrakech’s fortification
Marrakech’s architectural heritage, characterized by traditional rammed-earth buildings, is of great cultural and historical value. However, many of these structures are now severely compromised by the action of time, which is gradually undermining their physical stability and visual value. The present study aims to investigate viable solutions to this issue, specifically focusing on mapping and surveying the gates of Marrakech, key components of the defensive walls that surround the historic medina and testify to its strategic importance. The goal of the project is the development of a predictive conservation methodology, based on the use of digital twins, through which targeted restoration and preservation interventions can be designed and planned, thus fostering heritage transmission in a sustainable and scientifically sound manner. The detailed mapping and creation of computerized three-dimensional models can provide a precise and complete understanding of the state of the structures and allow their preservation to be constantly monitored and managed
The impact of classroom acoustics on student well-being and noise disturbance at the University of Pescara, Italy
Concerns about noise conditions in schools have led many countries to introduce standards or guidelines for school acoustics design. The aim of this paper is to investigate the extent to which classroom acoustics affect perceived well-being and noise disturbance at the University of Pescara in Italy. Approximately 100 students aged between 20 and 30 participated in the study, during which room acoustic measurements were taken, and noise levels were monitored in accordance with the national standard UNI 11532. To validate the measurements, a questionnaire was used, following the ISO 12913 standard. In addition to the empirical study, a numerical model was developed using ODEON, a widely recognized room acoustics simulation software. This model was employed to simulate and analyze the acoustic conditions in the classrooms under various scenarios, providing additional insights into the acoustic environment. The results of the correlation between subjective responses and objective measurements will be used to design more positive and inclusive learning environments

Unveiling user responses to AI-powered personalised recommendations: a qualitative study of consumer engagement dynamics on Douyin
PurposeThis study aims to explore the impact of artificial intelligence-powered personalised recommendations (AI-PPRs) on user engagement, browsing behaviour and purchase intentions on TikTok (Douyin in China), focusing on how these recommendations affect user satisfaction and purchase intention, while also addressing potential privacy concerns. In addition, the research investigates the influence of AI-recommended product presentation, timing and placement, as well as social factors such as key opinion leaders' (KOLs) influence on consumer decision-making.Design/methodology/approachUsing the expectancy-value theory and the stimulus-organism-response model, this research used a qualitative methodology through interviews with Douyin users to explore their experiences and perceptions of AI-PPRs.FindingsThe findings indicate that Douyin's proactive "push" mechanism of AI-PPRs enhances user engagement by effortlessly integrating product discovery into the entertainment experience. Content-driven AI-PPRs align with user preferences, decrease search time and increase satisfaction and purchase intentions through engaging short videos and live streaming. However, privacy concerns emerge when personalisation is perceived as excessively intrusive, leading to negative emotions and avoidance behaviours. Recommendation timing and cultural context significantly influence receptiveness, with inappropriate timing (e.g. during holidays) causing negative reactions. Technical challenges, such as network issues during live streaming, negatively impact user experience and engagement. Content quality is crucial, and poor or irrelevant content leads to negative perceptions and disengagement. While KOLs face scepticism due to perceived commercialisation, endorsements from trusted figures and authentic influencers are better received. Innovative payment methods, like "Douyin Monthly Payment", enhance financial flexibility and promote customer loyalty. This study highlights the need to balance personalisation with privacy, emphasising the importance of content quality and authenticity in influencer marketing. For businesses using AI-PPRs, maintaining this balance is essential for preserving trust and sustaining consumer engagement and loyalty.Originality/valueThis study contributes valuable insights to the field by unravelling the intricate dynamics between AI-PPRs, user preferences and social influences. The findings provide practical implications for companies aiming to optimise personalised recommendation algorithms and enhance user engagement, thereby facilitating business growth in the dynamic short video e-commerce market
