    Clinical Applications and Efficacy of Cyanoacrylates in Oral Surgery and Periodontology: A Scoping Review

    Background and Objectives: Cyanoacrylate (CA) tissue adhesives have gained increasing attention as alternatives to sutures in oral surgery and periodontology. The objective of this scoping review is to assess their clinical applications and effectiveness in wound closure and postoperative management. Materials and Methods: The review was conducted following the JBI methodology and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify randomized controlled trials published between 2015 and 2025 evaluating the use of CAs in oral surgery and periodontal procedures. Results: A total of 19 studies were included. Cyanoacrylate adhesives demonstrated comparable or superior outcomes to other wound healing strategies in terms of operative time, postoperative pain reduction, and early wound healing. Their use was particularly beneficial in free gingival grafts and palatal donor site management. However, the findings across studies were not always consistent, and some trials did not report statistically significant differences. The use of long-chain CA formulations is associated with minimal toxicological risk, though these adhesives demonstrate intrinsic hemostatic and antimicrobial effects. Conclusions: Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives represent a valid alternative to sutures in several dental surgical contexts, especially in procedures involving mucogingival grafts. Further high-quality clinical studies are needed to clarify their long-term outcomes and broaden their indications in dentistry

    Survival of dental implants placed in a postgraduate educational setting: a retrospective cohort study

    Introduction: Dental implant treatment can still fail due to various factors. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to assess the influence of operator experience in a postgraduate educational setting, as well as patient, implant, and surgical risk factors on the incidence of the dental implant failure. Methods: The dental records of 1049 implants with a mean follow-up of 794.70 days were analysed. Variables included operator experience (year of specialty study) and clinic-pathological patients’ related variables. Clinic-pathological associations were explored and a Cox regression model accounted for implant survival factors. Results: Multivariate analysis revealed that a history of periodontitis and smoking were the only factors with independent prognostic value, with hazard ratios of 2.0 (95 % CI: 1.0–4.0, p = 0.048) and 1.9 (95 % CI: 1.0–3.6, p = 0.039) respectively. Conversely, despite implant treatment delivered by early career students had a higher failure rate (5.6 %) compared to advanced career students (3.7 %), this difference was statistically significant only in the univariate analysis. Conclusion: Periodontitis and smoking are independent prognostic variables, with career level potentially biasing complex case allocation to advanced students. Targeted educational interventions, including virtual reality and artificial intelligence, should be emphasized in student training. University-based implant trials must consider operator career stage. Clinical significance: The study underscores the importance of operator experience in dental implant success. It highlights that while clinical experience influences outcomes, factors like a history of periodontitis and smoking are independent predictors of implant failure. These findings emphasize the need for targeted educational interventions to improve clinical training and patient outcomes

    Social inclusion and employee empowerment are key factors for organizational success in the post-pandemic era, characterized by a greater adoption of flexible work arrangements and an increasing need for work-life balance. However, invisible barriers often exist that hinder the inclusion of certain social groups, limiting their opportunities for growth and active participation in corporate life. Furthermore, measuring social inclusion in organizations represents a significant challenge, and traditionally used approaches demonstrate several limitations. This study proposes the use of Trust Network Analysis (TNA) to measure the level of social inclusion in organizations. The research draws on Social Identity Theory and literature on social inclusion and management control systems to investigate how TNA can support the development of a management control style that promotes employee accountability and empowerment. The results of the empirical analysis, conducted on data based on trust relationships among employees of an Italian company, provide an innovative measure of social inclusion and useful insights for developing more effective management control tools

    Evaluation of biochemical and economic outcomes in patients treated with PCSK9 inhibitors in a real clinical practice setting

    BACKGROUND: PCSK9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) in combination with high-dose statins can reduce LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels by 50-60% over statin monotherapy. This analysis investigated biochemical (LDL-C reduction) and economic outcomes in Italian patients treated with PCSK9i or potentially eligible but untreated. METHODS: Administrative databases of healthcare institutions covering around 5 million residents were used to identify patients with PCSK9i prescriptions or potentially eligible-untreated patients between 2017 and Oct-2022. Outcomes were assessed during follow-up in cohorts balanced for baseline covariates by propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS: After PSM-balancing, 2649 treated and 2649 potentially eligible-untreated patients were included: mean age 64.4-64.7 years, 70-68% males, 92-93% with hypertension, 24-25% with diabetes, and 87% with previous atherosclerotic/cardiovascular events. During follow-up, PCSK9i-treated patients versus untreated/eligible showed a reduction of LDL-C levels (68.9 +/- 43.9 vs. 100.4 +/- 34.6 mg/dL, P<0.0001), hospitalization rates for heart attack (4.5% vs. 6.8%, P=0.0069), heart failure (4.5% vs. 6.6%, P=0.010), and lower all-cause mortality (3.2% vs. 9.5%, P<0.0001). The multivariate Cox model confirmed that eligible-untreated patients had a more than doubled mortality risk compared to the PCSK9i-treated ones (HR: 2.291, 95%CI: 1.651-3.178, P<0.0001). Although mean annualized total healthcare costs were higher in PCSK9i-treated versus untreated/eligible patients (6745 vs. 4343, P<0.0001), because of the higher drug costs, PCSK9i therapy was associated with reduced expenses for hospitalizations (1113 vs. 1687, P<0.0001) and specialist outpatient services (386 vs. 787, P<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: The real-world analysis suggests that therapy with PCSK9i resulted in reduced LDL-C levels, lower mortality rates and cost savings for hospitalizations and specialist services

    The Strange Case of Functional High-Risk Multiple Myeloma Patients: Is It Possible to Identify Them in Clinical Practice?

    Background: Early relapse in multiple myeloma (MM) is a major predictor of poor prognosis, regardless of cytogenetic risk or treatment intensity. Methods: Here we analyzed 1026 MM patients treated across 12 Italian hematology centers. FHR was defined as progression-free survival (PFS) ≤18 months in transplant-eligible (TE) and ≤12 months in non-transplant-eligible (NTE) patients. Logistic regression and ROC analysis were used to identify significant predictors of FHR and build a risk score. Results: FHR status was identified in 175 patients (17%). These patients had significantly shorter PFS (7 vs. 57.5 months) and overall survival (19 months vs. not reached; p 2.0 (89% vs. 11%, p < 0.001). Multivariate logistic analysis selected the above formula, ECOG PS ≥ 2 and ISS III as factors associated with FHR. Scoring these variables according to OR, three groups of patients were segregated with a rate of FHR patients of 7%, 29.5%, and 63.5%, respectively. Treatment with anti-CD38 monoclonal antibodies was associated with lower FHR frequency. Conclusions: This study proposes a simple, clinically applicable model to identify FHR MM patients early in their disease course. However, very in-depth biological tools, not available in clinical practice, are needed to identify singularly risk of becoming FHR

    This Special Issue aims to compile a collection of scientific and technical papers related to applications and research in the field of geophysical site characterization for geotechnical studies. Several geophysical techniques are indeed nowadays available and diffusely adopted to aid geotechnical parameters estimation and help in imaging their spatial distribution at the site. These techniques are currently adopted providing specific parameters directly involved in geotechnical evaluations (e.g. shear wave velocity for earthquake engineering studies). However, in most cases, combined interpretation of geophysical and geotechnical test requires specific analyses and integration strategies. The idea for this Special Issue was launched during the 7th International Conference on Geotechnical and Geophysical Site Characterization – ISC’7 “Ground models, from big data to engineering judgement” held in Barcelona, Spain, in June 2024. On that occasion, a large number of papers regarding the current practices and future developments of geophysical site characterization for geotechnical studies were submitted to the conference by researchers from many countries, and Professor Marcos Arroyo, the Chair of the conference, together with Paola Montone, the Editor in Chief of Annal of Geophysics, supported the initiative to develop this Special Issue. The main idea was to collect in the Special Issue the best selected papers presented at the Conference in order to contribute to the definition of current practices and future developments of geophysical methods for site characterization and geotechnical studies. Contributions of this special issue were then collected both by inviting researchers who participated at ISC’7 and whose works were considered of high relevance and by opening a call for paper submission related to: the development of ground models for large and small projects through specific integration and combined interpretation of geophysical and geotechnical tests; the direct application of in situ geophysical and geotechnical tests for earthquake engineering and seismic microzonation studies; the development of new testing apparatus and procedures involving a combination of geophysical and geotechnical testing methodologies; the integration of geophysical and geotechnical monitoring techniques for time-lapse evaluations; the role of big data and machine learning in site characterization; and to the use of numerical simulation techniques as an aid to geotechnical and geophysical testing

    Beyond compliance: a textual analysis of drivers of sustainability reporting in Italian SMEs

    Summary of Background Data Sustainability reporting has historically been the field of large companies. However, in recent years, an increasing number of SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) have shown interest and in already implemented, sustainability reporting tools [3]. This trend is partly driven by the growing number of regulations and government initiatives that make sustainability reporting mandatory for SMEs. This study examines the sustainability reports of 15 Italian companies, drafted between 2020 and 2023, selected from the top 30 companies ranked highest in ESG performance according to the annual evaluation conducted by the Standard Ethics Agency. These firms operate in sectors such as agri-food, processed food, and consumer goods. By employing textual analysis, the study identifies key themes and examines how organizational characteristics — such as market presence (national vs. multinational), industry affiliation, and financial metrics (e.g., return on equity, solvency ratio) — influence their engagement in sustainable activities. Objectives Our research aims to identify recurring topics in corporate sustainability reports, analyze the impact of company attributes on topic prevalence, and explore linguistic differences using advanced textual analysis techniques. Methods The dataset comprises sustainability reports segmented into sentences using Python scripts. Text cleaning was performed to remove meaningless terms and company-specific identifiers. The Structural Topic Model [2] was implemented to identify prevalent themes, while covariates such as market presence, sector, and financial metrics (ROE and solvency ratio) were integrated to assess their impact on topic prevalence. A pre-determined optimal number of 15 topics was selected based on established metrics. Additionally, a Keyness Analysis [1] was conducted to detect linguistic differences among company categories, focusing on performance, size, and sector. Results The STM identified 15 distinct topics, including global sales, sustainability governance, carbon emissions reporting, sustainable sourcing, human rights, and healthy nutrition. “Top Performers” emphasized sustainability governance and innovation, whereas “Vulnerable” companies focused more on operational challenges. Sector-specific themes emerged, with agribusiness prioritizing sustainable sourcing, while processed foods highlighted consumer health. Keyness Analysis revealed linguistic differences: smaller companies used localized terminology, while multinationals adopted globalized narratives. Sector- specific language further distinguished sustainability focuses, emphasizing sustainable sourcing and marine conservation in agribusiness and nutrition in processed foods. Discussion/Conclusions This study underscores how organizational and financial characteristics shape sustainability narratives. Financial stability, market presence, and industry-specific challenges significantly influence the themes and language of reports. The findings provide actionable insights for enhancing transparency, aligning corporate reporting with global sustainability standards, and improving stakeholder engagement. References 1.
