Social Media and Smart Cities: Cultural Proximity as a Key to Digital Engagement
Smart cities increasingly use social media as an urban marketing tool for tourism promotion and stakeholder engagement. However, how cities adapt their digital strategies and adopt social media to engage intra-national (national) and inter-national (foreign) users remains under-explored. This study examines the role of social media responsiveness in shaping engagement with these distinct publics,
considering cultural proximity as a key factor influencing digital interactions. Using a longitudinal panel of 18 Italian cities (2010-2024), we assess the diversification of social media adoption through the Herfindahl index, while controlling for urban and economic characteristics. The results show that greater social media responsiveness is associated with greater engagement of both user groups, although the dynamics of engagement vary. Intranational users tend to interact more with city content, while international users face additional linguistic and cultural barriers, despite the role of digital platforms in facilitating global reach.
Integrating insights from smart city marketing, destination branding and digital governance, this study provides theoretical contributions and practical applications on how cities can optimise digital communication strategies to improve tourism flows, strengthen relationships with stakeholders and reinforce urban attractiveness. Several recommendations for managers and politicians in the sector can be drawn from this to optimise digital strategies in terms of tourist attractiveness and stakeholder involvement to encourage the participation of the various parties involved

Nietzsche’s Escape from and Return to Women
‘With women, “you never plumb their depths – they do not have any”.’ This quotation
from Losurdo’s work Nietzsche, The Aristocratic Rebel, one of the many where Nietzsche
addresses the feminine, clearly shows the German philosopher’s dislike and hatred of
women. Yet, in his work, Nietzsche repeatedly returns to the role of the female. We can
therefore say that the relationship with the feminine is one of the essential cruxes in
Nietzsche’s thought.
Beginning with Losurdo’s interpretation, this essay intends not only to investigate
the substantial discrepancy between Nietzsche’s ‘masculinist’ approach and his private and personal relationship with the feminine, but also to understand the theoretical, political, and historical reasons which led to his interpretation of the female.
Such an investigation will allow us to bring out contradictions intrinsic to Nietzsche’s
thought and reveal his sensitivity to the spirit of his time
Dalla parola scritta all'immagine.
The essay, aimed at a critical analysis of the work of Group 3 (“De la taipa al hogar”), offers a reflection on the deep connection between traditional earthen architecture and the context of southern Portugal, with a particular focus on the methodology of the workshop “Cultura Material no Alentejo” (Odemira, September 2024). This intensive seminar was designed to explore, analyze, and reinterpret the traditional architecture built in taipa (rammed earth) typical of the region.
The text highlights how the southern region of Portugal, characterized by a rich history and environmental diversity, has served as an “ideal laboratory” for understanding the intimate relationship between materials, construction techniques, building typologies, and settlement forms, all shaped by the surrounding geographical and cultural context.
The essay points to the emergence of a new generation of architects who not only focus on the restoration of the existing heritage but also on the renewal of taipa construction techniques as a means to express a fully contemporary architectural language.
The workshop provided an immersive educational experience centered on the balance between tradition and innovation in the use of taipa within a sparsely populated territory. The event combined theoretical lectures, field visits, and hands-on building experiences, offering an important opportunity to explore the deep relationship between historical heritage, landscape, and human settlement.
The text specifically describes the work of Group 3, composed of students from six different universities (Porto, Granada, Valencia, Venice, Pescara, and Bari). Their case study focused on a small rural taipa building—a typical monte alentejano—located in the municipality of Cavaleiro, near the coast of São Teotónio
A Narrative Review of the Role of S-Glutathionylation in Bacteria
Protein glutathionylation is defined as a reversible, ubiquitous post-translational modification, resulting in the formation of mixed disulfides between glutathione and proteins’ cysteine residues. Glutathionylation has been implicated in several cellular mechanisms ranging from protection from oxidative stress to the control of cellular homeostasis and the cell cycle. A significant body of research has examined the multifaceted effects of this post-translational modification under physiological conditions in eukaryotes, with a particular focus on its impact on the development of various diseases in humans. In contrast, the role of glutathionylation in prokaryotic organisms remains to be extensively investigated. However, there has been a recent increase in the number of studies investigating this issue, providing details about the role of glutathione and other related thiols as post-translational modifiers of selected bacterial proteins. It can be concluded that in addition to the classical role of such thiols in protecting against cysteine oxidation and consequent protein inactivation, many more specialized roles of glutathionylation in bacterial pathogenicity, virulence, interspecies competition and survival, and control of gene expression are emerging, and new ones may emerge in the future. In this short review, we aim to summarize the current state-of-the-art in this field of research
Development and validation of the Disrespect and Mistreatment during Childbirth Questionnaire: risk factors and effects on parenting stress
Introduction: A growing body of research indicates that disrespect and mistreatment during childbirth (obstetric mistreatment) are widespread globally. These experiences, along with their prevalence, risk factors, and impacts on maternal mental health, are often assessed using ad hoc tools, highlighting the need for psychometrically valid instruments. This study aims to develop and validate the Disrespect and Mistreatment during Childbirth Questionnaire (DMCQ) and explore factors contributing to negative childbirth experiences, as well as the relationship between mistreatment and parenting stress during the first two postpartum years. Methods: An online survey was administered to 620 women, assessing sociodemographic and childbirth-related factors, experiences of disrespect and mistreatment during childbirth, postpartum posttraumatic stress symptoms related to childbirth, personality traits, and parenting stress. Results: Exploratory factor analysis identified a 5-factor model with good internal consistency: negative interactions with healthcare providers, separation from the newborn, medical intrusiveness, verbal mistreatment, and pain experience. Confirmatory factor analysis supported this structure, showing positive correlations with perinatal stress (convergent validity) and no association with openness to experience (divergent validity). Higher scores on the DMCQ correlated with increased parenting stress, particularly distress related to the parental role. Women with higher education, low income, and births in Southern Italy reported greater obstetric mistreatment. Risk factors included primiparity, unplanned cesarean, instrumental delivery, episiotomy, anesthesia, labor exceeding 12 h, and delivery complications. Discussion: In conclusion, the Disrespect and Mistreatment during Childbirth Questionnaire is a psychometrically valid tool specifically designed to address obstetric mistreatment in the early years postpartum
