Replikationsdaten für: Learning Transfer from Virtual Reality to Real Reality – An Experimental Study on Learning by Doing as a Learning Principle
Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) has emerged as a powerful training medium, offering unique attributes for imparting motor skills. In this context, IVR enables learning by doing - a learning principle that makes use of the interactive nature of IVR by allowing learners to actively perform movements and action sequences. This study explores the effects of learning by doing in IVR in contrast to observational learning in IVR on short-term and long-term task performance in real reality. Moreover, to better understand mechanisms behind these effects, the study investigates the role of cognitive load and enjoyment in this regard. In an IVR experiment two groups of participants were asked to learn an action sequence in IVR, either by observation or by doing, which was to be demonstrated immediately after the experiment and approximately two weeks later. Surprisingly, no superiority of learning by doing over learning by observation emerged in terms of short-term and long-term task performance to reality, but tendencies of a higher long-term task performance in the learning by doing condition are evident. Despite the higher enjoyment associated with learning by doing, it did not mediate the relationship between learning by doing and learning outcomes. Notably, learning by doing did not result in higher germane cognitive load, and mediations in this context showed no evidence for an indirect effect. These findings are highly relevant as they show slightly discernible advantages of learning by doing and at the same time highlight the relevance of further research
Replikationsdaten für: Between materialism and sufficiency: Influences of consumption orientations on sufficiency behavior, well-being, and policy support considering the role of time wealth
Individual consumption orientations influence various domains on an individual, but also on a societal level. The present research investigates the relation between materialistic and sufficiency orientation and their effects on subjective well-being, sufficiency behavior, and support of sufficiency policies. In particular, these relations are considered from a temporal perspective by including time wealth and temporal autonomy as mediators. Results reveal sufficiency and materialistic as opposing consumption orientations. A materialistic orientation further seems to impede well-being through reducing perceptions of time wealth. Further, materialistic orientation reduces sufficiency behavior while sufficiency orientation shows positive effects on sufficiency behavior and support of sufficiency policies. These results underline the personal and sustainability-related benefits of transforming current modes of consumption towards economic structures focused on sufficiency and time wealth. An important lever to create structural conditions for a shift in consumer culture could be sufficiency policies that relate to sufficiency orientation and behavior

Replikationsdaten für: Strengthening sustainable consumption competence in high school students: Evaluation of an experiential training intervention
Designing effective educational measures constitutes a key area of action for achieving global sustainability goals. Therefore, the present study examined a training addressing sustainable consumption practices in plastic reduction, fashion and food. An interactive training was held in a German comprehensive school with grade 11 students, addressing psychological drivers of sustainable consumption behavior, namely, awareness and knowledge, emotional rational and value-based factors. The training was evaluated in a pretest(t1)/posttest(t2)/follow-up(t3) design. Final self-report data was obtained from 77 pupils in t1 and t2 and 56 pupils for all three points of measurement. Results of a repeated measures MANOVA indicate significantly higher levels of all outcome variables directly after the training. Significant long-term effects emerge on perceived control over one’s own behavior, perceived norms in the individual’s social environment, the knowledge of sustainable consumption alternatives as well as sustainable consumption behavior in everyday life. Taken together, results suggest the training to be an effective instrument for furthering actual sustainable consumption practices of young pupils. Its implementation during school hours with regular-sized classes offers a low expenditure educational approach for sustainable consumption

Molecular changes in hippocampal energy metabolism in mice selectively bred for extremes in stress reactivity: Relevance of mitochondrial dysfunction for affective disorders.
Affective disorders, such as major depression, are frequently associated with metabolic disturbances involving mitochondria. Although dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is known to alter energy metabolism, the precise mechanisms linking stress and metabolic disturbances are not sufficiently understood. We used a mouse model of affective disorders to investigate the impact of a genetic predisposition for extremes in stress reactivity on behavioural and metabolic phenotypes as well as energy metabolism. Adult males of three independent mouse lines selectively bred for high, intermediate or low HPA axis reactivity were tested for exploratory and locomotor activity as well as stress-coping behaviour. Additionally, basal and stress-induced plasma corticosterone levels, body weight, food intake and body composition were measured. At the molecular level, the hippocampal transcriptome was analysed using microarray, serial analysis of gene expression and qRT-PCR. Finally, mitochondrial DNA copy number, damages and mitochondrial respiration were assessed. We found clear effects of the differential stress reactivity on the behavioural, morphometric and metabolic measures. Remarkably, the hyperactive behavioural and neuroendocrine stress-coping style of high-reactivity mice was associated with significant changes in the expression of an extended list of genes involved in energy metabolism and several mitochondrial functions. Yet, only minor changes were found in mitochondrial DNA copy number, damages and respiration. Thus, our findings support a prominent role of glucocorticoids in shaping the major endophenotypes of the stress reactivity mouse model and contribute towards understanding the important role of HPA axis dysregulation and changes in energy metabolism in the pathophysiology of affective disorders
Faroe Islands Rephotography Image Registration Dataset
The dataset contains over 200 georeferenced registered rephotographic compilations of the Faroe Islands. The position of each compilation is locatable on a map. Each compilation consists of a historic and a corresponding contemporary image showing the same scene. The two images of a compilation are aligned, such that the same objects are positioned at the same pixel coordinate in both images. Contemporary images were photographed in Summer 2022 by the author while historic images were retrieved from the collections of the National Museum of Denmark
A Strategy to Design Protein-based Antagonists Against Type I Cytokine Receptors
Excessive cytokine signaling resulting from dysregulation of a cytokine or its receptor can be a main driver of cancer, autoimmune or hematopoietic disorders. Here we leverage protein design to create tailored cytokine receptor blockers with idealized properties. Specifically, we aimed to tackle the granulocyte-colony stimulating factor receptor (G-CSFR), a mediator of different types of leukemia and autoinflammatory diseases. By modifying designed G-CSFR binders, we engineered hyper-stable proteins that function as nanomolar signaling antagonists. X-ray crystallography showed atomic-level agreement with the experimental structure of an exemplary design. Furthermore, the most potent design blocks G-CSFR in acute myeloid leukemia cells and primary hematopoietic stem cells. Thus, the resulting designs can be used for inhibiting or homing to G-CSFR-expressing cells. Our work also demonstrates that designed cytokine mimics can be used to derive non-activating variants for tackling a range of cytokine receptors
