    No full text
For now only title, table of contents and abstracts] Europe went through a period of rapid and profound transformation in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, leading some historians to refer to this time as a first revolution. This comparative volume draws on regional case studies to explore specific developments in German and Italian regions, with a particular focus on interconnections between the Investiture Contest and changes in political and media communication, how power was exercised, and the structures of social relationships

    The European Union's Democratic Turn

This working paper argues that we are witnessing a democratic turn in EU initiatives to protect and promote EU values. If, for many years, EU institutions framed their interventions mostly in rule of law terms, since the first von der Leyen Commission took office democracy has become much more central in EU legislative and enforcement efforts. The WP analyzes the main pillars of the turn, discussing the core components of the European Democracy Action Plan and of the Defence of Democracy Package, and identifies its main drivers. Next to the need to provide better answers to constitutional backsliding processes, also other European and global challenges, such as the digital transition and the risks associated to foreign interferences in democratic processes, have pushed the EU institutions to bring forward new democratic initiatives. The WP then offers an initial analysis of the constitutional impact of the turn and reflects on some of the core challenges that EU institutions are facing in operationalising the value of democracy
