The Church of Physiotherapy: The Necessity for Betrayal

Get PDF
This paper draws lines of similarity between physiotherapy’s transcendent ontology and that of Christian fundamentalism. Like fundamentalism, I argue that physiotherapy dogmatically conforms to a limited, incontroversial Truth upheld by an unacknowledged imagined community which opposes epistemological and ontological mobility. Using this confluence, I illustrate how betraying physiotherapy becomes necessary in order to escape its conformist ontology. This essay reimagines God as an immanent creator through Gilles Deleuze’s ontology, which concurrently reifies physiotherapy and its ontology with one of immanence and difference. To escape the habituation of thought and make physiotherapy strange, I intentionally use unconventional and unfamiliar diction throughout this essay, creatively experimenting with the generative potential of Viktor Schlovosky’s concept of defamiliarization. By betraying the comfort of transcendence, affirming difference and unfamiliarity, we experiment with what physiotherapy could become

A partial English translation of the epic poem La Araucana is located at the Lambeth Palace Library in London). This prose version of Ercilla’s poem is attributed to Sir George Carew, a politician and soldier who served under Queen Elizabeth I of England. In this article, I will analyze this translation in light of the dispute between Spain and England for control of territories at the far south of the Americas. This approach will shed light on the ways in which European nations were trying to re-establish the limits of the Spanish overseas empire.

This article focuses on determining how and under what premises Elvira Hernández rewrites La Araucana at the beginning of the twenty-first century. There is a two-fold guiding hypothesis: a) a re-writing, self-defined as “pseudo,” becomes a sort of act of insurrection against the dominant Chilean (literary/political) culture and, at the same time, a replication by Hernández of Ercilla’s journey to Arauco; and b) the “seudoaraucana”, the urban-(seudo) Mapuche poetic voice, which defy the colonizing narrative of the hypotext – and its traditional role in national culture – fully assumes the cultural and ethnic legacy of the Mapuche identity at a time when this challenges the status quo of Chilean society.

Despite the abundance of research on the experiences of researchers with community-based participatory research (CBPR), there has been comparatively little published on CAB members’ experiences. The goal of this research was to analyze the lived experiences of a small sample of CAB members in recent health-focused CBPR in Canada, with a particular focus on areas for improvement. We found that CAB members in CBPR experienced low perceived value from researchers due to communication patterns, education differences, and inadequate compensation. These issues may be mitigated through increased CAB member engagement throughout the research process, adequate compensation, and improved emotional support. This study demonstrates that if CBPR methodologies are to live up to their promise, it is crucial that CAB members are enabled to work in true partnership with researchers, receive adequate compensation that is meaningful to them, and are supported throughout the process.

In the face of the climate emergency, it is becoming clear that cultural change is a necessary transformative shift that must occur to ensure human survival. Climate change is entangled with behavioural and social dimensions of our lives, necessitating that we undergo cultural transformation to access the potential of existing climate solutions. While there is both an increase in research regarding how the arts can contribute to this needed cultural transformation, as well as increasing participation in climate work by those within the arts sector, the marriage between evidence and practice in this field is in its infancy. Existing literature highlights the exciting potential of the arts to make meaningful contributions to climate action through interdisciplinary contributions to knowledge creation, public engagement forums that go beyond fact-sharing, and imagining future scenarios for our world. That said, arts organizations are often left out of the conversation. In an effort to bridge the gap between study and practice in this field, this paper reports on interviews with key members of CreativePEI to better understand how one arts organization and its members conceptualize their role in climate action as well as identifying critical barriers to conducting climate work within the arts. Further, the paper situates the results of the study within the current literature, examining any synergies between the findings of the study and scholarly works in the field. By showcasing the ways in which one arts organization situates itself within the broader project of climate change, this work sheds new light on the current state of climate work in the arts in Canada and how cultural organizations can reimagine their role to better align with the evidence about what the arts can uniquely offer to climate action.

Artists have long worked in fields that are not related to art, instigating innovative ways of working in different institutional contexts from health to business to technology. Civic systems are no exception, with artists spearheading new ways of operating within government agencies. Some artists work covertly, bringing creative methods to traditional civic roles, while others are invited into government agencies in temporary positions as artists in residence addressing specific concerns. As local governments are increasingly challenged to provide services and operate equitably amid eroding public trust, opportunities for cross-sector collaboration uniting artists with government staff are compelling mechanisms for them to cocreate the necessary conditions for systemic change. The research reported herein explores how artists are engaged in cross-sectoral collaborative models of cultural policy within local governments. Governments already recognize the potential of formal artist residency programs conducted over set periods of time to advance civic goals. In addition, artists have been engaged in this work through informal government partnerships in departments including transportation, parks, and public health. Some collaborations act as applied research enacted internally, bringing more complex understandings of government operations, while others become deep processes of external engagement to expand awareness of local concerns. This paper presents a framework categorizing the structures in which artists work within government agencies to advance civic goals. The framework is based on research conducted on artists who were embedded in the government across the US from 2020 through 2022. Describing these structures highlights new ways of working within local government that center artists as agents that promote change; this paper lays the foundation for understanding how they operate and delineates opportunities and challenges for the artists and the governments that initiate collaboration. The framework is a foundation for cultural policy makers to evaluate artist in residence in government programs as a cultural policy tool and enable evaluation of the impact of their implementation.
