A call for conscious “anti-preparation” to motherhood

    Get PDF
Our privileged position as doctoral students and mothers allows for a critical look at this issue that leads us to propose a form of “anti-preparation” to motherhood, in the sense that women should be called upon to deconstruct the constraining beliefs surrounding motherhood rather than accumulate new knowledge that is sometimes contradictory, often useless, and particularly anxiety-provoking. This is not a call to ignorance, but it does encourage us to temper our consumption of knowledge that can generate beliefs that erode and, above all, invisibilize women’s intrinsic strengths. While some of information surrounding motherhood is essential to know, we suggest that more attention must be devoted to empowering mothers and challenging dominant norms that ultimately don’t always serve them. In short, this plea seeks to challenge the authoritarian function of medicalized knowledge embedded in capitalist and patriarchal norms of motherhood, which work to minimize the intrinsic strengths of mothers. Our intention is not to promote an inclusive view that rests on the commercialization of motherhood, but rather an anti-oppressive approach that legitimizes both the intrinsic strengths of mothers and their facilitating beliefs, whether medicalized or tacit

Let us pick up where we left off. Part I started a conversation — pun intended — on Stanley Cavell’s intellectual legacy after the publication of Here and There with the help of scholars who have repeatedly and proficiently engaged with his work. The purpose, retained here, is to lead Cavell’s philosophy back where it is at home by spelling out the terms of criticism he contributed to set out and invite new attention to themes and argumentative tropes he cultivated. Given the range of directions in which Cavell’s philosophy extends, it is little wonder that one volume could not contain everything worth touching on. Hence, the need for the Part II you are now reading. Part II has clearly no ambition to be exhaustive, though. But there is no perversity, we believe, in thinking that leaving something out can dovetail with our aim of letting someone in: once again, if the essays here collected will go someway toward rekindling the interest in Cavell’s philosophy or, more generally and importantly, toward showing the aliveness of its philosophical approach to understand the world and ourselves, we will have enough ground to plant the flag we are trying to wave

    No full text
This article analyses the expression linguistic insecurity as an object of discourse in the French-speaking press in Canada from 1990 to 2022, by comparing a Quebec corpus (La Presse) and an Acadian corpus (Acadie Nouvelle). Using a historicizing approach, the authors show that linguistic insecurity received greater media attention at different times: in the 1990s and early 2000s in Quebec and from 2018, in Acadia. They note that, in the Quebec corpus, linguistic insecurity is treated as a political issue linked to a concern about the future of French in Quebec; in the Acadian corpus, it is rather a public issue that relates to the illegitimacy of varieties of Acadian French. The comparison of the two discursive spaces shows that the thematization of the expression is linked to sociopolitical conditions and intergroup relations.

    Get PDF
This article considers the order of accumulation in La vorágine and understands the infrastructure of armed individuals that sustains it as paramilitaries, thus questioning the narrative that sees paramilitarism as a recent phenomenon. It claims that paramilitaries from the beginning of the twentieth century fought a perpetual war against an absolute enemy, and that Rivera’s novel unveils the paramilitary horror upon which the modern Colombian nation-state is established. It maintains that the novel, in its denunciation of the horrors of the Putumayo, calls for the state to wage a paramilitary war for the expropriation and exploitation of natural resources.

Ethnographic Seeping in Mid-Twentieth-Century Mexican Cinema

This article argues that the impact of what Lomnitz has termed Mexico’s “national anthropology,” which structured indigenismo and mestizaje as official institutional projects, also reverberated in the representation of Indigeneity in Mexican mid-twentieth-century cinema. Proposing the concept of “ethnographic seeping,” this study illustrates how the ethnographic mode recurs parenthetically in commercial and independent Indigenous-themed narrative films intended for popular audiences and/or prestige venues. While ethnographic seeping enacted a distanced and appropriative relationality between spectators and Indigenous Mexicans, it also functioned critically to contest official aims and perspectives.

(Di)Simulation of the Bestiary Genre in Animalia exstinta by Esteban Seimandi, Hugo Horita, and Juan Cruz Bazterrica

This article explores one of the latest branches in the evolution of the bestiary genre in contemporary Hispanic literature, (di)simulating bestiaries. The bestiary, a literary genre that proliferated during the medieval period, drew attention with its illustrations and illuminations, as well as the allegories it featured, fulfilling a didactic, Christian function. Although new Hispanic bestiaries published in the past two decades respect the form of the bestiary, that is to say, the presentation of the message with a title, image, and short text, they also offer increasingly creative interpretations that play with the content of the genre. This article explores a subcategory of bestiaries, which through their content pose as other genres for ludic literary purposes. The present study focuses on Animalia exstinta, written by Esteban Seimandi, illustrated by Hugo Horita, and designed by Juan Cruz Bazterrica. Using Jean Baudrillard’s concepts of simulacra and simulation, as well as surface and symptomatic reading, the article analyzes how Animalia exstinta simulates an environmental manifesto from fragments of contemporary Argentine culture and nostalgia.

Stanley Cavell famously remarked that there was a “truth in scepticism,” where the recognition of this truth was apt to prompt a kind of anxiety. Here is Cavell describing this putative truth:An admission of some question as to the mystery of existence, or the being, of the world is a serious bond between the teaching of Wittgenstein and that of Heidegger. The bond is one, in particular, which implies a shared view of what I have called the truth of skepticism, or what I might call the moral of skepticism, namely, that the human creature’s basis in the world as a whole, its relation to the world as such, is not that of knowing, anyway not what we think of as knowing. One natural way of responding to Cavell on this score is that he is simply courting mystery. After all, he takes a distinctly Wittgensteinian line on sceptical problems, and doesn’t Wittgenstein show, in a quietistic spirit, that such puzzles are merely the product of faulty philosophical theorizing? If so, then the sceptical puzzle is simplyillusory and can hence be summarily dismissed. In particular, there is no truth that it might hold and no moral for us to extract (bar the general one about being wary of philosophical problems). Consequently, there are no legitimate grounds for any kind of anxiety arising in the wake of our resolution of this problem
