    Synergistic enhancement of pollutant removal from water by using BiOCl/BiOBr heterojunction on clay surface and sunlight irradiation

    International audienceNew photocatalysts based on kaolinite-supported BiOClxBr(1-x) solid solution nanocomposites (BiOClxBr(1-x)@Kaol), were synthetized by using ecofriendly co-precipitation approach, for enhanced organic pollutant removal. Thereafter, the photocatalytic performances of the resulting photocatalysts were evaluated by the decomposition of Rhodamine B (RhB) and the Ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP) with removal efficiencies of 100 % for RhB dye, and 95 % for CIP antibiotic, within reaction times of, 15 min and 45 min, respectively. In addition, the reuse of the nanocomposite for 5 cycling shows that the removal efficiency relatively remains constant, indicating that the kaolinite clay plays an essential role in the stability of the photocatalyst. These results prove that the BiOClxBr(1-x)@Kaol nanocomposites are suited photocatalysts for a large scale application. Monte Carlo based on adsorption locator module in Material Studio was used to assess the intermolecular behavior and the interaction energies occurring between the BiOClxBr(1-x) (002) and RhB or CIP molecules, on the Kaol (001) surface, to form BiOClxBr(1-x)@Kaol (002)/RhB or BiOClxBr(1-x)@Kaol (002)/CIP

    Photo‐Accelerated Synthesis of Oligo(triazole amide)s

    International audienceAbstract A photo‐assisted process is explored for improving the synthesis of oligo(triazole amide)s, which are prepared by solid phase synthesis using a repeated cycle of two reactions: amine‐carboxylic acid coupling and copper‐catalyzed azide‐alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). The improvement of the second reaction is investigated herein. A catalytic system involving Cu(II)Cl 2 , N , N , N’ , N ″, N ″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) and a titanocene photoinitiator is explored for reducing the reaction time of CuAAC. This catalyst is first tested on a model reaction involving phenylacetylene and ethyl azidoacetate in DMSO. The kinetics of these model experiments are monitored by 1 H NMR in the presence of different concentrations of the photoinitiator. It is found that 30 mol% of photoinitiator leads to quantitative reactions in only 8 min. These conditions are then applied to the solid phase synthesis of oligo(triazole amide)s, performed on a glycine‐loaded Wang resin. The backbone of the oligomers is constructed using 6‐heptynoic acid and 1‐amino‐11‐azido‐3,6,9‐trioxaundecane as submonomers. Due to slow reagent diffusion, the CuAAC step required more time in the solid phase than in solution. Yet, one hour only is necessary to achieve quantitative CuAAC on the resin, which is twice as fast as previously‐reported conditions.     Biomimetic Virus-Like Particles to control cell functions

    Biomimetic cues from the extracellular matrix (ECM) are essential for optimizing cell microenvironments and biomaterials. While native ECM proteins or synthetic peptides offer potential solutions, challenges such as production cost, solubility, and conformational stability limit their use. Here, we present the development of virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the AP205 RNA phage displaying peptides from key ECM proteins and evaluate their biological activity in a variety of assays. We show that our engineered VLPs can effectively stimulate cell adhesion, migration, proliferation and differentiation. By comparing focal adhesions formed by RGD VLPs with their parent protein, fibronectin, we elucidate both similarities and differences in cell interactions. In addition, we construct heterodimeric particles co-expressing RGD with differentiation peptides and demonstrate retention of bioactivity in a multi-peptide context. This study establishes AP205 VLPs as versatile nanoscale platforms capable of tuning cell functions, with promising applications in nanomedicine and biomaterials.</div

    A Convolution-Assisted Vision Transformer for the Classification of Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

    International audienceMany works that require the classification of whole slide images (WSIs) primarily involve classifying patches extracted from the WSIs. The classes from the patches are extrapolated as the class of the WSI. Pathologists, however, consider the surrounding region of a patch before classifying it. We show that this can be done by a combination of a self-supervised CNN feature extractor and a vision transformer. We also study how well an ImageNet feature extractor compares to a self-supervised feature extractor trained on selected medical images. Conducted experiments showed patch-level class prediction accuracy of 93.69% with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.76 on the self-supervised feature extractor, and 97.35% accuracy with an AUC of 0.77 on the ImageNet feature extractor. On a WSI-level prediction, an accuracy of 73.68% when using the self-supervised feature extractor, and 36.84% when using the ImageNet feature extractor

    Breast implant silicone exposure induces immunogenic response and autoimmune markers in human periprosthetic tissue

    Silicone-based breast implants are commonly used, but there are concerns about their long-term safety. While implantation results in the formation of a periprosthetic tissue that isolates the implant from the rest of the host body, silicone can leak and reach surrounding tissues. We combined histological analysis and gene expression profiling (RNA sequencing) of samples from human patients with silicone breast implants with different fillers (silicone or serum), surface topographies and/or shell rupture, and performed systematic cross-comparisons. Our study shows that exposure to silicone gel filler, even in clinically asymptomatic cases, induces an immune response. This response includes the expression of markers associated with various autoimmune diseases. This study provides the first biological evidence of an association between silicone implants and autoimmune markers, highlighting the need for further research and stricter implant safety regulations. We suggest that implant design factors, such as filler type and surface texture, may influence the inflammatory response. Re-evaluation of existing clinical trials is warranted to investigate the association between implant characteristics and potential health risks.</div

Several studies point to a large potential of sharing practices and digital sharing platforms (e.g. Airbnb or BlablaCar). Recent studies focus on examining why users join and how they adopt this new sharing phenomena, but we know next to nothing about how digital sharing platforms (DSP) guide users' behaviour. This research explores the acceleration mechanisms used by digital sharing platforms and aims to explain how DSP encourage users to consume more. We conducted a qualitative survey using the netnography method. Our data were collected from members of French branch of HomeExchange.com platform
