Determining the role of HLA-B27 on COVID-19
Aim: Human leukocyte antigen-B27 (HLA-B27) binds antigenic peptides in the structure of some viruses and presents them to cytotoxic T lymphocytes and plays a role in the immune response against these viruses. It has also been found to be associated with auto-immunity as an inverse relationship and is associated with a number of auto-immune inflammatory diseases, especially Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). Our aim in this study is to determine the role of HLA-B27 in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-Cov-2 (Coronavirus Disease-COVID-19). Materials and Methods: 90 HLA-B27 positive and 96 HLA-B27 negative cases were included in the study. COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) results and Thorax Computed Tomography (CT) results, hospitalization and death records of the cases were retrospectively analyzed from the system records. Results were compared between HLA B27 positive and negative groups. Results: Of the HLA-B27 positive cases, 32.2% had COVID-19 positivity, 5.6% had COVID-19 lung involvement. 44.8% of HLA-B27 negative cases had COVID-19 positivity and 11.5% had lung involvement. There was no significant difference between the HLA-B27 positive and negative groups in terms of having COVID-19 infection, lung involvement, hospitalization and death rates. Conclusion: The results of our study show that HLA-B27 does not have a protective role in terms of having COVID-19 and lung involvement. Again, since no auto-immunity related SARS was observed in any of the patients, it can be said that it did not increase the severity of the hyper-immunity-related disease and did not increase the risk of death in particular for COVID-19. These results need to be supported by more studies
Viral respiratory tract infection in Gaucher disease, a rare disease: A case study of 24 patients in Malatya, Türkiye
Aim: People with chronic diseases have a higher rate of morbidity and mortality from SARS-CoV-2 infection. Unknown is how SARS-CoV-2 affects rare disease populations like Gaucher disease. The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of SARS- CoV-2 infection has on Gaucher patients. The only study conducted in Turkey so far is this one. Materials and Methods: Patients with Gaucher disease were included in the study between August 2020 and September 2022. Patients diagnosed with Gaucher disease were questioned one-on-one to determine if they had come into contact with another person who had COVID-19 symptoms or another patient who had COVID-19. The patients were questioned and their answers were recorded regarding their GBA genotype, previous splenectomy history, whether or not they received treatment, and whether or not they had a SARS-CoV-2 test. Results: Eight of our patients reported having contact with someone who had COVID-19 infection or was suspected of having the infection, and in three of these cases (37.5%) the patient reported having at least one symptom of infection. Out of the 18 patients who were tested, 4 (22.2%) had a positive result. Positive test results were associated with more symptoms in patients (3.8 vs 0.3, p0.001) than negative test results. In Gaucher patients, symptoms or positive test results were not correlated with age, gender, BMI, comorbidity, genotype, previous splenectomy, or enzyme replacement therapy. All of our patients only received supportive care; none of them required intensive care or specialized treatment. Conclusion: Our research revealed that there was a low risk of serious side effects in other chronic patients following SARS-CoV-2 infection in Gaucher patients. In this regard, studies with larger case series are require

Infantile Esotropia: Clinical Features and Results of Bilateral Medial Rectus Recession
Introduction: To define the characteristics of infantile esotropia and evaluate the results of bilateral medial rectus recession in infantile esotropia. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on medical charts of patients diagnosed with infantile esotropia. All patients underwent an ophthalmological examination to detect the conditions that accompany infantile esotropia. Patients with two years of age or older and without fixation preference or amblyopia underwent bilateral medial rectus recession. Results: There were a total of 117 patients with infantile esotropia patients. Infantile esotropia was accompanied by inferior oblique hyperfunction, fixation preference, cross-fixation, pseudoabduction deficit, pattern deviations, nystagmus, dissociated vertical deviation, convergence insufficiency, and abnormal head position. Approximately forty percent of the patients compatible with visual acuity measurements had amblyopia. Bilateral medial rectus recession decreased the mean esotropia from 43.1±15.3 to 7.8±12.8 prism diopters (PD) in 65 patients. Postoperatively, 41 patients had an ocular alignment within 10 PD of orthotropia, 22 patients showed undercorrection and 2 overcorrection. Conclusion: The characteristics of infantile esotropia in our study are substantially consistent with those of early reports, except for convergence insufficiency. This study also showed that bilateral medial rectus recession appears to have a high percentage of undercorrection in short-term postoperative follow-up in infantile esotropia

Background: In our study, we aimed to determine the distribution of intestinal parasites detected in patients admitted to our hospital before and during the COVID-19 (Corona virus disease-2019) pandemic. Materials and Methods: Stool samples that came to the Microbiology Laboratory of our hospital in 2019 (before the COVID-19 pandemic) and 2021 (the period of the COVID-19 pandemic) were examined under the light microscope with the native-lugol method after the macroscopic examination to investigate intestinal parasites. Cellophane tape samples taken were Enterobius vermicularis (E. vermicularis) and Taenia spp. evaluated in terms of. Results: Parasites were detected in 1260 (6%) of a total of 20973 samples received in 2019 and in 426 (8.9%) of a total of 4751 samples received in 2021. Parasite positivity in 2021 was found to be significantly higher than in 2019. The rates of Giardia intestinalis (G. intestinalis), Ascaris lumbricoides (A. lumbricoides) and E. vermicularis were significantly higher in 2019 compared to 2021. Entemoeba histolytica/dispar (E. histolytica/dispar) and Entemoeba coli (E. coli) positivity were found to be significantly higher in 2021 than in 2019. The positivity rates in the 0-5 and 6-12 age groups were significantly higher in 2021 compared to 2019. The number of samples coming from the pediatrics and immunology-allergy department was found to be significantly higher in 2021 than in 2019. The number of samples coming from the departments of internal medicine and infectious diseases was found to be significantly higher in 2019 compared to 2021. Conclusions: We think that compliance with personal hygiene rules, social isolation and health education is effective in reducing some of the parasitic infections in the COVID-19 pandemic. We believe that the data obtained can be a guide in the fight against parasitic infections during pandemic periods.Amaç: Çalışmamızda COVID-19 (Corona Virus Disease-2019) pandemisi öncesi ve pandemi döneminde, hastanemize başvuran hastalarda saptanan intestinal parazitlerin dağılımını belirlemeyi amaçladık. The relationship between osteochondral lesion of the talus and the foot arch angles in adults: A retrospective study
Aim: The current study aimed to compare the arch angles of the foot, Achilles tendinopa- thy, subcutaneous fat tissue thickness of the heel, and epin calcanei (EC) in patients with osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT). Materials and Methods: The magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the ankle performed by the radiology clinic between March 2020 and October 2021 were examined. Based on the MRI findings, the patients diagnosed with OLT were included in the study group (n = 55) and those not diagnosed with OLT formed the control group (n = 118). All the patients included in the study were investigated for their demographic characteristics and presence of EC. Weight-bearing lateral X-ray images were used to measure the lateral talus- first metatarsal angle (Meary’s angle), lateral talocalcaneal angle (LTCA), and calcaneal inclination angle (also known as the calcaneal pitch). Results: The study and control groups had no significant difference in terms of gender distribution (P = 0.575). The patients in the study group had a significantly higher mean age than the control group (P < 0.001). Evaluation of the arch angles of the foot showed the patients with OLT to have higher LTCA and calcaneal pitch angles and greater sub- cutaneous fat thicknesses (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.004, respectively). In addition, the study group showed higher rates of patients with EC and Achilles tendinopathy (p = 0.076 and p = 0.019, respectively). According to the binary logistic regression analysis model, each unit of increase in the patients’ age increases the presence of osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the talus by 1.063 times (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.012-1.116; P = 0.015). Each unit of increase in LTCA increases the presence of OCD of the talus by 1.360 times (95% CI: 1.219-1.516; P < 0.001). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that sex had no effect on OLT incidence, whereas changes in the LTCA and pitch angles elevated the risk of OLT. Furthermore, increased age was found to be associated with a higher risk of OLT formation. We also showed that Achilles tendinopathy and EC were significantly higher in patients with OLT. A considerable number of future studies are needed to establish whether this significant relationship is causal
Effects of Endothelin-A Receptor Antagonist BQ-123 on Plasma Leptin Levels in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats
Objective: Leptin and endothelin (ET) as important endogenous factors interacting with each other which may contribute to a better understanding of their role in diabetic pathogenesis. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between leptin and ET by investigating the influence of BQ-123, an ET-A receptor (ET AR) antagonist, on leptin levels in rats with diabetes induced by streptozotocin (STZ). Methods: In this study, 24 male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups: control, STZ and STZ+BQ-123 groups. Experimental diabetes was induced by delivering a single dose of 60 mg/kg intravenous STZ. The rats in the STZ+BQ-123 group received 4 mg/kg i.v. in total BQ-123 (2 mg/kg +2 mg/kg on the 39th and 40th days). The plasma specimens collected 6 hours after the last BQ-123 delivery were studied for biochemical parameters. Results: At the end of the experiment, the weights of rats in the STZ and STZ+BQ-123 groups were significantly lower compared with the values in the control group. The levels of blood glucose were significantly higher in the STZ and STZ+BQ-123 groups than in the control group. While rats with STZ-induced diabetes demonstrated no changes in leptin, protein carbonyl and K+ levels, they exhibited reduced NO, Na+ and Cl- concentrations. The levels of plasma thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance were significantly higher in the STZ group than in the control and STZ+BQ-123 groups. Conclusion: Although the levels of plasma leptin were not statistically significant different between the groups, BQ-123 groups lead to a further decrease in reduced levels of leptin than in only diabetic group. Our findings have been considered that ET AR antagonists have positive impacts depending on the dosage in the diabetic rats.Scientific Research Fund of Gaziosmanpasa University [2010/95]This research was supported and approved by The Scientific Research Fund of Gaziosmanpasa University (Project no: 2010/95)

The effect of silicon on plant growth and some physiological parameters in salt stress tolerant and sensitive melon genotypyes
Salinity stress in crop production is known as the most important abiotic stress that restricts plant growth and yield. In this study, salt tolerant and sensitive genotypes selected from different genotypes used in a previously completed study were used as plant material, and a pot experiment was carried out in a growing greenhouse in order to determine the effect of silicon on plant growth and some physiological parameters. Salt application was started two weeks after the seedlings were transferred to the pots. Silicon application was started at the same time as the salt application two weeks after the seedlings were transferred to the pots and was applied by adding it to the nutrient solution. Two different salt doses (0 and 100 mM) and 2 mM Si doses were used in the study. In order to follow the plant growth, the growth parameters such as plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, root length, green parts and root fresh and dry weights, relative growth rate, physiological parameters; The amount of chlorophyll, leaf water potential, leaf osmotic potential, photosynthesis rate, transpiration rate, stomatal permeability, intrinsic carbon dioxide and leaf temperature were investigated. As a result of the study, it was determined that the silicon applied to the melons grown under salt stress had a statistically significant effect on each observed parameter. Finally, it was determined that silicon application generally contributed positively to plant growth and physiological parameters compared to control group plants
