LYMPHOGRAPHY IN THE ASSESSMENTOF MYCOSIS FUNGOIDES

    No full text
Extracutaneous manifestations of mycosis fungoidesimply a bad prognosis and are a major cause ofdeath. Benign dermatopathic lymphadenopathy isassociated with mycosis fungoides and often precedeslymphomatous infiltration. In this study, 10patients in the early stages of mycosis fungoidesunderwent clinical and lymphographical examinations. In one the lymphoma was already present inlymph nodes. Six had signs of dermatopathic adenopathywhich was verified by lymph node biopsy in5. In one of these the disease later progressed to amalignant lymphoma. The frequent occurrence oflymph node involvement justifies the use of lymphographycollaterally with staging laparotomy todetermine the presence of pathologic retroperitoneallymph nodes

CONGENITAL HEREDITY LYMPHEDEMA IN THE PIG

    No full text
A histopathological investigation was performed innewborn pigs with congenital hereditary lymphedema. The edema varied greatly in degree and extension.Although mostly confined to the hind legs it mayinvolve other parts of the body, and even attain amost severe generalized distribution. It was founddue to malformations of the lymphatic system whichwere general in character in all animals irrespectivethe grade in their edema. Parallel to the grade ofedema however, these lymphvascular abnormalitiesvaried from minor hypoplasia and localized aplasia toa complete agenesis of the whole lymphatic system

FLOW AND COMPOSTION OF RENAL HILAR LYMPH DURING VOLUME EXPANSION AND SALINE DIURESIS

    No full text
Volume expansion of 5-10% body weight in dogswas achieved by infusion of 0.9 %, 1.2 % or 0.4 %saline. The average diuretic response for each groupwas 9.9 ± 2.1, 5.5 ± 0.6 and 3.3 ± 0.9 (mean ± S.E.)ml/hr/kg respectively. Flow from single hilarlymphatics increased by an average of 150 %, therebeing no significant difference between the groups.A significant (p 0.02) positive correlation wasfound between the increase in hilar lymph flow andthoracic duct lymph flow. No correlation was foundbetween hilar lymph flow and the extent of thediuresis. Control hilar lymph contained higherconcentrations of Na+ (L/P = 1.05) and Cl-(L/P = 1.12) (P 0.001) and lower concentrationsof glucose (L/P = 0.86) (p 0.001) than didsimultaneous plasma. The electrolyte lymph-to-plasmadifferences were maintained despite increasesor decreases in plasma concentrations. The resultsindicate that changes in hilar lymph flow are relatedto volume expansion rather than to the diuresis, andthat the processes responsible for lymph-to-plasmacompositional differences are relatively unaffectedby changes in plasma levels

REGENERATION OF THE DEEP CERVICAL LYMPHATICS -LIGHT AND ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS -

    No full text
Regeneration of the lymphatic vessels followingligation of the deep cervical lymphatics was studiedin 35 rabbits using both light and electron microscopes. The newly formed lymphatics were evidentunder the electron microscope in the first postoperativeweek, in which the restoration of theaffected endothelial cells of the lymphatics andreaction of the free cells such as fibroblasts andmacrophages were observed

LYMPHOCYTE MIGRATION THROUGH THE WALLS OF THE POST-CAPILLARY VENULES

    No full text
The results of morphological analyses of the directionof the lymphocyte traffic through the walls ofthe HE-venules are conflicting. The aim of this paperis to provide a short analytical review of the evidenceavailable for the bi-directional hypothesis and for theuni-directional hypothesis

INFLUENCE OF CORTICOSTEROIDS ON LYMPHOCYTE RECIRCULATION

    No full text
The effect of corticosteroids on cell kinetics and cellsize distribution in the circulating lymphocyte populationsof the steroid sensitive rat and the steroidresistant guinea pig were studied.A single high steroid dose (prednisolone) induced arapid depression of the lymphocyte level both innormal and thymectomized animals of both speciesand a restitution within one day. The returning cellpopulation showed the same size distribution andlabel index profile as before involution. The maineffect of a single steroid dose seems to be a ,trapping"of lymphocytes with redistribution from thecirculation to some tissues. The difference betweenthe two species seems to be quantitative with a morepronounced trapping mechanism in the sensitive ratbut a certain degree of lymphocytolysis can not beexcluded in this species. The steroid action seems tobe on both T-and B-lymphocytes and the restitutionof cell levels after acute involution is independent ofan intact thymic function. The same course of eventswas observed in the normal rat after stress, but notin the thymectomized rat

MULTI-MODAL IMAGING FEATURES AND LYMPHO-VENOUS SHUNT FOR VAGINAL CHYLOUS FISTULA IN LYMPHANGIOLEIOMYOMATOSIS: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW

    No full text
Vaginal chylous fistula is a very rare lymphatic disorder and lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is also a rare multisystemic disease. LAM with the development of a vaginal chylous fistula has rarely been reported. Here we report a case of vaginal chylous fistula accompanied with LAM. A 61-year-old woman occasionally experiencing milky vaginal discharge for the last 3 months underwent CT lymphangiography (CTL) after direct lymphangiography (DLG) and lymphoscintigraphy. DLG showed lymph flowing backwards toward the pelvic cavity. CTL revealed abnormal distribution of contrast agent in the pelvic cavity, including uterus, vagina, perineum, bladder, and muscles in the bilateral pelvis. Multiple small thinwalled cystic lesions were present in both lungs. Lymphoscintigraphy demonstrated lymphangiectasia in the pelvic cavity bilaterally with radionuclide tracer flowing back abnormally into the pelvic walls. The vaginal exudate was positive for chyle. According to LAM guidelines, the patient was diagnosed with LAM. This case presents multimodal images of a rare case of vaginal chylous fistula accompanied with LAM and highlights the value of CT lymphangiography after DLG in establishing the diagnosis and providing important guidance for sequential therap
