Quadrangular Love Theory and Scale: Validation and Psychometric Investigation

    No full text
This article comprehensively reviews the major components and dimensions of love that researchers operationalized in psychometric scales throughout recent decades. The Quadrangular Love Theory (QLT) synthesizes the achievements of psychometrics of love and demonstrates – theoretically and empirically - that they are grouped in four umbrella love dimensions: Compassion and Affection, which characterize the feelings toward a partner, and Closeness and Commitment, which characterize the feelings regarding a relationship. To test this theory, the authors developed the Quadrangular Love Scale (QLS) and explored its construct validity and psychometric properties in two studies utilizing various samples. Study 1 (N = 592) generally supported convergent and discriminant validities and internal reliability of the four dimensions. Study 2 (N = 584) provided additional support to the discriminant validity of QLS in terms of personality traits as predictors of major love feelings and love attitudes as typological differences of experiencing these feelings

EDITORIAL: Interdisciplinarity and Instructional Design in Technology

    No full text
Higher education today is still constructed through discipline-based approaches. To build a true interdisciplinary curriculum, instructional designers must begin with student needs and expected learning outcomes, which are not discipline specific. It is our hope that, in the near future, instructional design and technology programs will become more visible in the university settings as fine examples of interdisciplinary teaching and research.DOI:10.2458/azu_itet_v7i1_czerkawsk

EVALUATING THE RESPONSIVENESS OF THE FULLERTON ADVANCED BALANCE SCALE IN PATIENTS WITH LYMPHEDEMA SECONDARY TO BREAST CANCER SURGERY

    No full text
Lymphedema following surgical treatment for breast cancer can impair balance and predispose patients to falling. Fullerton Advanced Balance (FAB) Scale is a reliable and valid tool which can identify persons with different balance levels, but its responsiveness has not been investigated in patients with lymphedema secondary to breast surgery. Thirty women with stage 2 lymphedema secondary to breast cancer treatment received complex decongestive therapy (CDT) for 2 weeks as a routine treatment method. They were evaluated with FAB Scale and Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT), volumetric measurements and circumferential measurements of the upper limbs before and after CDT. A moderate change was found in FAB score after CDT (Cohen’s effect size = 0.65). For FAB, the computed standard error of the mean was 0.85 and minimal detectable change was 2.33. Significant improvement in FAB score and TUGT results, and significant reductions in circumferential and volumetric measurements were seen after 2 weeks of CDT. The FAB score change showed a moderate correlation with circumference change and volumetric change (r = -0.41) but a very weak correlation with TUGT change (r = -0.1). The FAB Scale showed acceptable responsiveness in detecting treatment effects in patients with unilateral secondary lymphedema after breast cancer treatment

INCREASED TRAFFICKING OF MESENTERIC LYMPH-DERIVED γδ T CELLS INTO INTESTINAL MUCOSA IS ASSOCIATED WITH GUT INJURY AFTER INTESTINAL ISCHEMIA-REPERFUSION IN RATS

    No full text
We sought to investigate the effects of mesenteric lymph-derived γδ T cells trafficking into intestinal mucosa on gut injury after intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (IIR). γδ T cells were separated from mesenteric lymph and then infused into the femoral vein of rats after the γδ T cells were labeled with 51Cr. Migration of γδ T cells in vivo across the intestinal mucosa was determined by γ-counter. Meanwhile, TNF-α activity and endotoxin concentration in mesenteric lymph were detected. The population of γδ T cells of Peyer’s patches in the small intestines was analyzed by immunofluorescence double staining methods and flow cytometry. After IIR injury, the mean optical density value (MOD) and population of γδ T cells in Peyer’s patches of the gut and migration of 51Cr-γδ T cells across the intestinal mucosa were significantly increased, which had highly positive correlations to degree of intestinal injury, TNF-α levels and endotoxin concentration in mesenteric lymph after reperfusion. The increased population of γδ T cells derived from mesenteric lymph trafficking into the intestinal mucosa might promote the small intestinal injury after IIR
