    “Our Voice” – A Project by Children and Youth with Additional Needs: A Children’s Participation Case Study from Lebanon

    *Arab Countries of the Middle East and North Africa | Reports from Field This field report outlines an innovative social video project, Our Voice, that took place in Beirut, Lebanon. The project was based on the concept of inclusion and using the creative potential of media advocacy to promote it. Children and youth with and without disabilities collaborated on making Our Voice an advocacy film that socially commented on the ever-ignored situation of people with disabilities in Lebanon and advocated inclusion as a solution. The project was a nine-month experience that took a very close look at the meaning of communication, expression and participation in an environment that celebrated diversity and abstained from stereotyping the capacities of others. As a result, Our Voice engaged participants on a capacity-building journey that encouraged equality, action, choice and independence. &nbsp

    The YouthPower Story: How Adults Can Better Support Young People’s Sustained Participation in Community-Based Planning

    *Focus on the United States and Canada | Reflective Practice This paper discusses the roles adults need to play to support youth as effective agents of change in their community. Case studies drawn from YouthPower, a community-service learning program in Holyoke, Massachusetts, demonstrate how the participatory planning and design work of young people can be extended, and adult behaviors and attitudes altered, through adult/youth collaboration on neighborhood and citywide improvement projects. The adult roles discussed include those of supporter, resource provider, power broker, and coordinator. We also consider how community planning involving youth can be realized and sustained through comprehensive and coordinated youth and youth/adult networks

    “This Is Political!”: Negotiating the Legacies of the First School-Based Gay Youth Group

    *Youth and School Transformation | Reports from the Field In 1972, a group of students of color at New York City’s George Washington High School’s founded the first school-based gay group on record in the United States, using their school as a site of activism by participating in both their school’s student government opportunities and in an emergent social movement. The group formed by these Bronx students can be interpreted as the very first example of what is known today as a gay-straight alliance (GSA) even though the conventional history of the GSA begins in the late 1980s with a group of suburban private school students. This exclusion from the history of student participation in activism for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) civil rights suggests a significant alternate reading of the racism, classism, and geographic biases of the greater LGBT movement, its organization, direction, priorities, and narratives for/about LGBTQ youth, especially urban youth of color. Considering alternate readings of youth participation might better enable us to envision a political strategy that accentuates shared values of social justice, the civil and human rights to an equitable education, and the significance of building coalitions in order to ensure safer schools for all

    Effect of Calcium in Delimed Hide on Leather Quality

    The efficient removal of calcium from delimed hide is essential to leather quality, but few reports have elaborated on how residual calcium in delimed hide affects leather quality. In this study, four delimed hides containing different calcium content were first prepared by using ammonium sulfate and sodium gluconate. Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry results showed that the atomic percentages of calcium on the grain surfaces of the four delimed hides were 8.17%, 4.82%, 2.34%, and 0.25%, respectively. The bating, chrome tanning, and post-tanning performances of the four delimed hides were then analyzed to evaluate the effect of calcium in delimed hide on leather quality. Results showed that the removal efficiency of non-collagenous protein from hide in enzymatic bating, the evenness of chromium distribution, the shrinkage temperature of wet blue, and the physical properties of crust leather all increased as the calcium content of delimed hide decreased. Furthermore, efficient calcium removal from the grain surface of delimed hide played a key role in the color brightness and uniformity of wet blue and crust leather. The results draw our attention to the importance of considering the effectual removal of calcium from delimed hide for obtaining high-quality leather

    Development of Nano Bio Aldehyde Tanning Agent for Sustainable Leather Manufacture

    Exploring the application of natural biopolymers in leather manufacture is a need of the hour to achieve sustainability. The present research work explores the possibility of using modified biopolymer nanoparticles as a tanning agent. Starch, a polysaccharide with high functionalization, is converted into Nano Bio Aldehyde (NBA) through periodate oxidation as water-in-oil microemulsion method. The synthesized product was characterized by its physico-chemical nature. The prepared NBA shows an aldehyde content of 85%, which endorses its application as a tanning agent. Experimental leather trials were carried out to assess the tanning efficacy and found that NBA tanned leathers show a shrinkage temperature of 90°C. Physical characteristics of the experimental leathers were found to be 24 N/mm2 and 90 N for tensile and tear strength, respectively. The study provides a holistic understanding of modified biopolymer as a nano tanning agent to manufacture leather

    Effect of Acid Swelling and Its Impact on the Properties of Cow Industrial Glove Leathers

    The development of commercially successful salt-free chrome tanning technology is the need of global leather sector to reduce the total dissolved solids in wastewater. Though some attempts have been made to develop salt-free chrome tanning technology, drawbacks such as slow diffusion of chromium, unevenness in softness and other organoleptic properties are the major concern. The generation of localized acid swelling might be a reason for the above drawbacks and no scientific literature available for the same. Hence, it is important to analyze the effect of acid swelling and its impact on the diffusion of chromium, ageing characteristics of wet-blue leather and physical properties of crust leather. The results show that the acid swelling delays the diffusion of chromium in tanning process and also enhances the growth marks on wet-blue leather. The ageing study reveals that the wet-blue obtained from acid swollen system dehydrates faster than the conventional salt based chromium tanning system. In addition, the wet-blue leather from acid swollen system is prone to fungal attack. The industrial glove leather obtained from acid swollen system has reduced strength characteristics viz., 15% reduction in tensile strength, 17% reduction in tear strength and 20% reduction in grain crack/bursting strength. Further, the degree of heterogeneity in softness is high for crust leather obtained from acid swollen system and also more looseness with internal emptiness. Color value measurements reveal that the crust leather obtained from the conventional tanning system is lighter in shade than the acid-swollen system. The results will be useful to design commercially viable salt-free or low-salt tanning systems as well as to tackle the inadvertent industrial scenario where the tanners are looking for solutions for accidental acid swelling and subsequent salvage of the leathers for possible recovery and applications
