College Physical Activity Instructors Perceptions of their Professional Behaviors on Student Experiences in Class

    No full text
The Appropriate Instructional Practice Guidelines for Higher Education Physical Activity Programs (SHAPE, 2022) document states that the purpose of “college and university instructional physical activity (PA) programs is to build upon this foundation [of physical activity throughout life] and educate students to continue that journey to enhance well-being, and live healthy, physically active lives” (p. 5).  One person that can educate college students regarding their lifetime physical activity is the class PA instructor.  Professional behaviors are recommended  that college PA instructors should implement in their teaching and interactions with students are outlined in the above-mentioned document.  For this study, 10 college PA instructors were surveyed regarding professional behaviors exhibited by college PA instructors.  Generally, the PA instructors felt that their professional behaviors did affect the students experience in their PA classes.  Also, the participants in this study felt that PA instructors should take their professional behaviors responsibilities seriously

Integration Of Utilitarian Scientific Literacy Modules Improve First-Year HBCU STEM Student Experiences

Attrition in STEM remains a concern for universities across the US, as the nation struggles to keep up with global demand for a well-trained STEM workforce. Attrition amongst underrepresented student populations is of particular concern as retention rates are statistically lowest among these groups. As such, the US struggles to fully tap into its greatest potential advantage, a diverse STEM workforce. Of recent, agencies have zeroed in on efforts to increase diversity in STEM. However, HBCU’s have been at the forefront of these efforts throughout time. Through this report, we assess the utility of utilitarian scientific literacy modules for their ability to improve first-year HBCU STEM student outcomes in aims of further increasing retention of diverse student populations in STEM

Text-as-Image: Fashion Curator Communication from a Design and Museum Studies Perspective

    No full text
This paper aims to examine engagement for a specific Instagram practice of fashion curators: the use of text-as-image. It builds upon previous research, which indicates that fashion curators frequently post images of text (Sand et al. (2022)). The study examines the multimodal digital communication by fashion curators from a design perspective, with a focus on engagement. Its mixed-methods approach combines qualitative eye-tracking, surveys, semi-structured interviews, participative netnography, thematic content analysis, and data analytics. It draws on communication and museum studies to gain a better understanding of how the visual elements of language are used and received in the Instagram environment. Findings indicate that while engagement with text-as-image is higher with certain typographies and sizes, engagement is also dependent on certain caption characteristics. Furthermore, they indicate that a cross-pollination of digital fashion communication and museum studies research, particularly museum label guidelines and visitor engagement studies, may benefit both domains.&nbsp

It Takes Two to Dance: Ethical AI Use in Research Skill Development for Security Studies Students

The introduction of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) sparked considerable discussion among educators. Integrating GenAI into course design and delivery while adhering to academic integrity standards and preventing unethical student utilization has been among the focus areas. GenAI tools can be a double-edged sword due to their potential impact on educational outcomes and ethical considerations. While proponents of GenAI highlight the potential for enhanced student engagement, opponents raise concerns about issues such as academic integrity and data privacy. This study argues that by allowing ethical student utilization of AI, educators may increase student engagement with the course material. Through careful use of generative AI technologies in education, their benefits will be maximized while mitigating the potential adverse impacts. Using data from four sections of the residential (in-person) Introduction to Research Methods courses (SS 207) of the Security Studies & International Affairs Department at Embry-Riddle University\u27s Daytona Beach campus, we find that ethical utilization of GenAI is associated with higher student engagement and success

A Review: Unique Molecule ‘Carvacrol’ and Its Brilliant Future for the Leather Industry: by Eser Eke Bayramoğlu

    No full text
Carvacrol is the predominant monoterpenic phenol (isomeric with thymol) in many essential oils of the family Lamiaceae including Origanum, Thymus, Satureja, Thymbra and Corydothymus species and of the family Verbenaceae – Lippia. Carvacrol is responsible for most of the biological properties of oregano. Türkiye is the biggest exporter of oregano herb and oil in the world markets. Oregano essential oils display antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant and antimutagenic activities and such properties could be important for use in leather production. In recent years, due to increasing environmental pressure and the increasing value given to sustainable leather production, the necessity of more sensitive production has emerged. This paper highlights some of these activities and suggests possible usage of carvacrol in the leather industry for sustainable production

Sustaining a Robust Alternative to Traditional Cooperative Education (Co-op): UC’s Experiential Explorations Program (EEP) for Creative Majors

    Get PDF
This article provides an overview of the Experiential Explorations Program (EEP) for creative majors in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati (UC). A brief evolution of this curricular innovation is provided and we focus on the current state of the program. We outline the pedagogical model with a focus on structure, accountability, and mentorship. EEP case studies are presented for three students across majors and class years. These serve to celebrate student success while providing an in-depth view of possibilities for self-directed learning in creative fields. Challenges and opportunities for continued evolution of the EEP model are discussed. &nbsp

Growing Minds: The Role of Family Residence Green Spaces and Household Chaos on Children’s Executive Function

    Get PDF
This study examines the relations between access to family residence green spaces, household chaos, and children’s executive function, a critical component of cognitive development. The study analyzed data (N = 468) from families participating in a larger U.S. longitudinal birth cohort study when children were 24, 48, and 60 months. Findings suggest that some early access to green space and outdoor items can influence children’s cognitive capacities and household environment. This research emphasizes the importance of promoting green spaces and reducing household chaos to support children’s executive function development and overall well-being. Implications for education and policy are discussed.&nbsp

Centering Empathic Relations and Co-Learning in an Outdoor Education Partnership: “I Know Carneros Creek Loves Me Because…"

Land trusts are an important component of conservation and increasingly seek approaches that integrate social and conservation goals, often through community based partnerships. This article shares the evolution of a partnership between a land trust, elementary school, and university along the central coast of California. It highlights ways that the partnership centers empathic relationships, especially from the perspective of children who otherwise have very limited access to nature. The partnership applies an action research framework through which partners consider how to co-create, co-learn, and meaningful be in community while also documenting “magical moments,” or times where joy and connection occur, with the land and with each other
