    Analysis of early Iron age glass beads (8th to 7th c. BC) from the Tsaishi necropolis (Georgia)

    International audienceWe present the analytical results obtained by LA-ICP-MS from a set of 38 glass beads of various colours dating from the 8th to the first half of the 7th century BCE, found at Tsaishi cemetery, located in the central area of historical Colchis (Georgia).Through the comparison with published analytical data of coeval, earlier and later glass samples, the aim of this study is to investigate the provenance of Tsaishi assemblages in order to highlight the cultural influences and trading networks of the Colchis community between the 8th and the 7th centuries BC.Tsaishi glass beads predate previously studied glass beads from Brili necropolis, located in the mountainous part of Colchis (North-west Georgia). In contrast to the compositions of the Brili glasses, the measurements of the Tsaishi glass beads do not allow for the identification of the well-established Iron Age compositional groups. Furthermore, in contrast to the other Early Iron Age sites, they do not appear to indicate the presence of typical Egyptian or Syro-Palestinian natron glass productions. Although our assemblage shows considerable compositional variability, it highlights the existence of a new group of glass recently identified in Italy and characterised by a positive cerium anomaly, as well as a group of high boron and lithium glasses. However, despite the large variation in contents for minor elements, colourless and purple glass are all part of the same group.Comparison with other Early Iron Age glass studies points to a fairly complex situation, probably due to small scale production of raw glass and glass beads, the multitude of production sites and the diversity of recipes used by glass workers at the beginning of the first millennium B.C

    Is the Contact Effect Related to Age?: An Empirical Investigation of French Multilevel Data

    International audienceThis chapter examines how age influences the contact effect in shaping tolerance toward immigrants, using French data from the 2017 European Values Survey. While contact theory posits that frequent interactions with immigrants generally increase tolerance, the findings reveal a nuanced relationship. A higher share of immigrants in a district correlates with greater tolerance, but this effect diminishes for young immigrants (15–24 years), often leading to lower tolerance. Interestingly, respondents’ age does not significantly affect their reaction to immigrant proportions. These results challenge utilitarian perspectives, suggesting that hostility toward young immigrants is rooted in personal experiences rather than economic logic

    A NICER view of the 1.4 solar-mass edge-on pulsar PSR J0614--3329

    International audienceFour neutron star radius measurements have already been obtained by modeling the X-ray pulses of rotation-powered millisecond pulsars observed by the Neutron Star Interior Composition ExploreR (NICER). We report here the radius measurement of PSR J0614-3329 employing the same method with NICER and XMM-Newton data using Bayesian Inference. For all different models tested, including one with unrestricted inclination prior, we retrieve very similar non-antipodal hot regions geometries and radii. For the preferred model, we infer an equatorial radius of Req=10.290.86+1.01R_{\rm eq}=10.29^{+1.01}_{-0.86}\,km for a mass of M=1.440.07+0.06MM=1.44^{+0.06}_{-0.07} \, M_{\odot} (median values with equal-tailed 68%68\% credible interval), the latter being essentially constrained from radio timing priors obtained by MeerKAT. We find that, for all different models, the pulse emission originates from two hot regions, one at the pole and the other at the equator. The resulting radius constraint is consistent with previous X-ray and gravitational wave measurements of neutron stars in the same mass range. Equation of state inferences, including previous NICER and gravitational wave results, slightly soften the equation of state with PSR J0614-3329 included and shift the allowed mass-radius region toward lower radii by 300\sim 300\,m

    Mieux comprendre les comportements des primates grâce à l'intelligence artificielle : un outil pour la médiation en parc zoologique

    International audienceL’enregistrement vidéo constitue une méthode non intrusive pour étudier le comportement animal, mais l’annotation manuelle des séquences comportementales reste chronophage et exigeante. Les progrès technologiques ont permis une explosion du volume des données disponibles, rendant possible le développement de nouvelles méthodes automatiques de traitement des données, comme l’intelligence artificielle (IA) et la vision par ordinateur. Ces outils peuvent faciliter l’annotation des séquences par les chercheurs tout en fournissant une aide précieuse pour l’analyse fine des interactions sociales. Les singes magots (Macaca sylvanus) forment des groupes multi-males et multi-femelles et leur répertoire comportemental compte au moins 51 signaux de communication. La diversité et la subtilité de ces comportements les rendent souvent difficiles à interpréter, notamment pour le grand public. L’observation des réactions des visiteurs a permis l’identification de quatre comportements sociaux d’intérêt (montes sociales, auto- et allo-toilettages et grattages) qui sont fréquemment interprétés à tort comme agressifs, sexuels ou hygiéniques. Notre objectif est de développer un outil de reconnaissance automatique de ces comportements afin d’améliorer la médiation auprès des visiteurs de zoos en proposant une explication contextualisée de ces comportements. À partir de vidéos enregistrées au ZooParc de Beauval sur un groupe de 35 magots, nous avons (1) développe un modèle d’IA capable de détecter et suivre les individus sur 400 séquences vidéo d’une durée moyenne de 60 secondes (pour un total de 800 trackings) et (2) annoté plus de 500 comportements exprimés par ces individus. L’étape suivante consistera à entrainer un modèle d’apprentissage profond à reconnaitre les comportements annotés

    Perturbative renormalisation of the Φ^4_{4-ε} model via generalized Wick maps

    We consider the perturbative renormalisation of the Φ^4_d model from Euclidean Quantum Field Theory for any, possibly non-integer dimension d < 4. The so-called BPHZ renormalisation, named after Bogoliubov, Parasiuk, Hepp and Zimmermann, is usually encoded into extraction-contraction operations on Feynman diagrams, which have a complicated combinatorics. We show that the same procedure can be encoded in the much simpler algebra of polynomials in two unknowns X and Y , which represent the fourth and second Wick power of the field. In this setting, renormalisation takes the form of a "Wick map" which maps monomials into Bell polynomials. The construction makes use of recent results by Bruned and Hou on multiindices, which are algebraic objects of intermediate complexity between Feynman diagrams and polynomials
