Location and energy of electrons producing the radio bursts from AD Leo observed by FAST in December 2021

    No full text
International audienceIn a recent paper, we presented circularly polarized radio bursts detected by the radio telescope FAST from the flare star AD Leo on December 2-3, 2021, which were attributed to the electron cyclotron maser instability. In that context we use here two independent and complementary approaches\pz{, inspired from the study of auroral radio emissions from solar system planets,} to constrain for the first time the source location (magnetic shell, height) and the energy of the emitting electrons. These two approaches consist of (i) modeling the overall occurrence of the emission with the ExPRES code, and (ii) fitting the drift-rate of the fine structures observed by FAST. We obtain consistent results pointing at 20-30 keV electrons on magnetic shells with apex at 2-10 stellar radii. Emission polarization observed by FAST and magnetic topology of AD Leo favour X-mode emission from the southern magnetic hemisphere, from which we draw constraints on the plasma density scale height in the star's atmosphere. We demonstrate that sensitive radio observations with high time-frequency resolutions, coupled to modelling tools such as ExPRES, analytical calculations and stellar magnetic field measurements, now allow us to remotely probe stellar radio environments. We provide elements of comparison with solar system radio bursts (Jovian and Solar), emit hypotheses about the driver of AD Leo's radio bursts and discuss the perspectives of future observations, in particular at very low frequencies (<100 MHz)

Mn-Doped Carbon Dots as Contrast Agents for Magnetic Resonance and Fluorescence Imaging

    No full text
International audienceCarbon nanodots have recently attracted attention as fluorescence imaging probes and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents in diagnostic and therapeutic applications due to their unique optical properties. In this work we report the synthesis of biocompatible Mn (II)-doped carbon nanodots and their performance as fluorescence and MRI contrast agents in in vitro assays. The thermal decomposition of a Diphenylhydantoin–Mn(II) complex assured the incorporation of manganese (II) ions in the carbon dots. The obtained materials display a favorable spin density for MRI applications. The synthesized Mn(II)-CNDs also displayed remarkable photoluminescence, with a bright blue emission and good response in in vitro fluorescence imaging. Cytotoxicity investigations revealed good cell viability on malignant melanoma cell lines in a large concentration range. A cytotoxic effect was observed for MG-63 osteosarcoma and breast adenocarcinoma cell lines. The in vitro MRI assays demonstrated the potentialities of the Mn(II)-CNDs as T2 contrast agents at low dosages, with relaxivity values higher than those of commercial ones. Due to the simplicity of their synthetic pathway and their low cytotoxicity, the prepared Mn(II)-CNDs are potential alternatives to currently used contrast agents based on gadolinium complexes

Modeling Solute Transport in Rivers: Analytical and Numerical Solutions

    No full text
International audienceThis study presents a novel analytical framework for modeling one-dimensio- nal solute transport in rivers, integrating advection, rate-limited adsorption on suspended sediments, and first-order degradation. Analytical solutions are used to validate the numerical scheme’s accuracy under idealized conditions, tested for instantaneous and continuous pollutant discharges. The research importantly investigates short-term solute accumulation in riverbeds, a crit- ical yet understudied process that affects sediment transport and pollutant fate. Applicable to a wide range of contaminants (e.g., nutrients, pesti- cides), the framework aids water quality assessment, pollution control, and risk mitigation. Implemented in the open-source SWASHES library, these solutions provide practical tools for decision-support systems and serve as reliable benchmarks to validate numerical models. By addressing transient and persistent pollutant scenarios, this work enhances predictive capabili- ties for environmental management. The approach bridges analytical and numerical methods, offering a robust foundation for simulating solute trans- port across industrial and ecological contexts, advancing sustainable water resource management

Molecular-sized bubbles in a liquid: free energy of formation beyond the capillarity approximation

    No full text
International audienceWe investigate the transient bubbles that spontaneously appear in a simple liquid using molecular simulations. The objective is to deduce the free-energy of formation of the bubbles W (s) from the bubble size distribution p(s) through the hypothesis of a Boltzmann distribution: W (s) = -kT ln p(s). The bubbles are detected and characterized using a method based on a grid superimposed on the liquid, efficient for bubbles larger than the grid mesh. We first investigate how the results are affected by the mesh choice, and show that using several mesh values allows for the detection of bubbles in a wide range of sizes with minimal computing cost. The free-energy of formation of a bubble can then be deduced for a large range of sizes, with particular emphasis in the region of vanishing bubbles scarcely investigated in previous works. We first show that the usual Boltzmann relation has to be modified when the bubble size is characterized by its volume. In particular, the bubble volume distribution diverges for a vanishing bubble, which should be taken into account before calculating its free-energy of formation from the above formula. An analytical expansion, valid for any interacting spherical molecules, confirms this observation. We then show that the capillarity approximation fails for small bubbles: an extra contribution, linear with the bubble radius, has to be added to the usual quadratic (surface) and cubic (volume) contributions to the free-energy. This extra term most probably relates to the irregular shape of the tiny bubbles
