Local limits of conditioned marked Galton Watson trees

    No full text
We consider a Galton-Watson tree where each node is marked independently of each others with a probability depending on its outdegree. We give a complete picture of the local convergence of critical or sub-critical marked Galton-Watson trees conditioned on having a large number of marks. In the critical and sub-critical generic case, the limit is a random marked tree with an infinite spine, named marked Kesten's tree. We focus also on the non-generic case, where the local limit is a random marked tree with a node with infinite out-degree. This case corresponds to the so-called marked condensation phenomenon.

The Rapid Arrival of Josiah Willard Gibbs's "Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics" in European University Libraries

    No full text
This note offers an overview of how Josiah Willard Gibbs's "Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics", published simultaneously in London and New York in 1902, spread through European university libraries. Contrary to the received idea that the circulation of this text was slow, information gathered through direct contacts with numerous academic libraries, together with an examination of Yale University's archives, reveals an unexpectedly rapid material diffusion beginning on 15 March 1902. This early propagation can be explained by several channels: presentation copies sent by Yale University to leading universities, personal mailings by Gibbs himself to prominent scientists, and the distribution of copies by the American publisher to major scientific journals

SimSDP, a Rapid Prototyping tool for Radio Astronomy: From NenuFAR Experiments to SKAO-Scale Simulation

    No full text
International audienceSimSDP is a rapid prototyping tool designed to provide early estimates of the computation times and energy consumption of SKAO's future SDP processor pipeline. This paper extends a previous proof-of-concept by: (1) exploring further parallelism through dataflow modeling of spectral parallelism with joint or distributed deconvolution, (2) simulating pipeline behavior on multi-core multi-node CPU architectures for multiscale data, (3) deploying parametric prototype pipelines using real-world data from the NenuFAR instrument. Experimental results show that SimSDP effectively supports design-space exploration by simulating three radio-interferometric imaging algorithms on HPC systems, with simulation uncertainty below 10%

CHIME All-sky Multiday Pulsar Stacking Search (CHAMPSS): System Overview and First Discoveries

    No full text
International audienceWe describe the CHIME All-sky Multiday Pulsar Stacking Search (CHAMPSS) project. This novel radio pulsar survey revisits the full Northern Sky daily, offering unprecedented opportunity to detect highly intermittent pulsars, as well as faint sources via long-term data stacking. CHAMPSS uses the CHIME/FRB datastream, which consists of 1024 stationary beams streaming intensity data at 0.9830.983 ms resolution, 16384 frequency channels across 400--800 MHz, continuously being searched for single, dispersed bursts/pulses. In CHAMPSS, data from adjacent east-west beams are combined to form a grid of tracking beams, allowing longer exposures at fixed positions. These tracking beams are dedispersed to many trial dispersion measures (DM) to a maximum DM beyond the Milky Way's expected contribution, and Fourier transformed in time to form power spectra. Repeated observations are searched daily to find intermittent sources, and power spectra of the same sky positions are incoherently stacked, increasing sensitivity to faint persistent sources. The 0.9830.983 ms time resolution limits our sensitivity to millisecond pulsars; we have full sensitivity to pulsars with P > 60\,ms, with sensitivity gradually decreasing from 6060 ms to 22 ms as higher harmonics are beyond the Nyquist limit. In a commissioning survey, data covering 1/16\sim 1/16 of the CHIME sky was processed and searched in quasi-realtime over two months, leading to the discovery of eleven new pulsars, each with S_{600} > 0.1 mJy. When operating at scale, CHAMPSS will stack >1 year of data along each sightline, reaching a sensitivity of 30μ\lesssim 30\, \muJy for all sightlines above a declination of 1010^{\circ}, and off of the Galactic plane

    No full text

A double dipole geometry for PSR J0740+6620

    No full text
International audienceContext. Millisecond pulsars are known to show complex radio pulse profiles and polarisation position angle evolution with rotational phase. Small-scale surface magnetic fields and multipolar components are believed to be responsible for this complexity, due to the radiation mechanisms occurring close to the stellar surface but within the relatively small light cylinder compared to the stellar radius.Aims. In this work, we use the latest NICER phase aligned thermal X-ray pulse profile of PSR J0740+6620 combined with radio and γ-ray pulse profiles and radio polarisation to deduce the best magnetic field configuration that can simultaneously reproduce the light curves in these respective bands.Methods. We assumed a polar cap model for the radio emission and used the rotating vector model for the associated polarisation and a striped wind model for the γ-ray light curves, whereas we relied on the NICER collaboration results for the hot spot geometry.Results. We demonstrate that an almost centred dipole can account for the hot spot location with a magnetic obliquity of α ≈ 51° and a line of sight inclination angle of ζ ≈ 82°. However, with this geometry, the hot spot areas are three times too large. We found a better solution consisting of two dipoles located just below the surface in approximately antipodal positions.Conclusions. Our double dipole model is able to reproduce all the salient radio and γ-ray characteristics of PSR J0740+6620 including radio polarisation data. A double dipole solution is more flexible than an off-centred dipole because it has two independent magnetic axes and could hint at a magnetic field mostly concentrated within the crust and not in the core
