What a peaty contribution to global warming! An interdisciplinary study of atmospheric and hydrologic carbon fluxes in a temperate peatland in the Jura Mountains, eastern France

    No full text
International audiencePeatlands, though covering only 3 % of the global land surface, play an active role in the Critical Zone (CZ) by mediating substantial water and carbon exchanges with adjacent aquifers, surface waters, and the atmosphere. These ecosystems provide key services, such as carbon and water storage and local climate regulation, addressing contemporary challenges related to climate change, biodiversity loss, and water resource management. However, peatlands are increasingly threatened by global pressures, including climate change, and local disturbances, such as drainage for agriculture, forestry, and peat extraction. To mitigate these threats, it is essential to understand the hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes governing peatland dynamics across spatiotemporal scales. To explore the factors controlling greenhouse gases sources, production, and transport in peatlands, an interdisciplinary field campaign was conducted at the Frasne peatland (7 ha, 46.826°N, 6.1754°E, 840 m a.s.l.), a long-term observatory since 2008. The site is part of the French CZ research infrastructure (OZCAR) and the long term ecological research site Jurassian Arc, which focuses on the interaction between human and nature. The campaign was supported by the TERRA FORMA project, which develops smart, connected, low-cost, and low-impact environmental sensors to monitor CZ trajectories in the Anthropocene. The fieldwork integrated microbiological analyses of peat material, including membrane lipid profiling to trace microbial metabolisms, combined with detailed hydrogeochemical investigations of peat pore water along lateral flow and depth gradients. Measurements included physicochemical parameters (temperature, electrical conductivity, pH) and major elements, dissolved organic and inorganic carbon (DOC and DIC), CO₂, and CH₄ concentration, as well as their isotopic characterization (δ¹⁸O, δ²H, δ¹³C) . Additionally, greenhouse gases fluxes were quantified at multiple scales, employing methods such as dissolved gas profiling, chamber measurements, eddy covariance, and UAV-based surveys. This multiscale approach aims to tackle critical challenges in peatland research and management, including three-dimensional quantification of carbon fluxes (lateral and vertical) at the ecosystem scale; characterization of hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes that modulate greenhouse gases and dissolved carbon production and transport; and development of accessible and efficient tools for addressing these pressing environmental issues. three-dimensional quantification of carbon fluxes (lateral and vertical) at the ecosystem scale; characterization of hydrological, biogeochemical, and ecological processes that modulate greenhouse gases and dissolved carbon production and transport; and development of accessible and efficient tools for addressing these pressing environmental issues

Linguistica e corpora interazionali : tra interrogazione, applicazione e comparazione

    No full text
International audienceIn this talk, I will present my current research trajectories in the field of interactional corpus linguistics, focusing on three areas.Firstly, the interrogation of spoken corpora that researchers can carry out on freely available online databases in order to provide a sequential and multimodal analysis of conversational exchanges. Secondly, the exploitation of corpus studies that researchers can consider from an applied linguistics perspective (mainly for didactic purposes). Finally, comparisons of the use of certain linguistic structures that can be drawn from different corpora of spoken languages in interaction. For this last part, I will propose contributions to the comparative study of discourse markers in two Romance languages, French and Italian talk-in-interaction.

    No full text

Advancements and Challenges in UAV-Based Gas Detection: A Review of Emerging Technologies

    No full text
International audienceThis literature review examines recent advancements in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for atmospheric gas detection and environmental monitoring. The reviewed studies encompass a diverse range of applications, including maritime emission surveillance, industrial pollution assessment, odor mapping in wastewater facilities, and greenhouse gas plume tracking. UAVs equipped with advanced gas sensors offer high-resolution, real-time data collection capabilities in complex or hazardous environments, providing a flexible and costeffective alternative to traditional ground-based or satellite-based methods. Despite these advantages, key limitations persist, such as sensor calibration issues, environmental interferences (e.g., wind, humidity, and temperature), limited flight endurance, and UAV-induced airflow disruptions. The integration of advanced data processing algorithms, sensor fusion techniques, and optimized flight planning has been widely recommended to enhance accuracy and reliability. This review highlights the growing potential of UAV-based systems for environmental sensing and underscores the need for continued research in system robustness and operational scalability.</div

A Study on the Transition from the Convective to Absolute Instabilities in Steam Water Flows

    No full text
International audienceIn the current experimental study, investigations have been carried out on studying the transition from convective to absolute instabilities in a confined, spatially developing forward flow of steam-water two-phase flows. Experimental results aligned well for critical Reynolds numbers, gauge pressure, and wave frequencies/wavelengths. Initially, the flow was stable or minimally affected by instabilities, but it gradually became convectively unstable before transitioning to absolute instability in both axial and radial directions. Throughout the flow, oscillations at the absolute frequency modified the flow structure, even near the pipe exit approximately 3-4 cm away from the exit.</div

    No full text

    No full text
