EARNING DOWNSIDE RISK AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ESG PERFORMANCE IN THE PRIMARY ECONOMIC SECTOR

This study explores the impact of corporate sustainability measured by environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance on earning downside risk (EDR). We focus on the role (of ESG) performance in moderating firms' earning downside risk (EDR), especially in uncertain economic times. The economic uncertainty is evidenced by the recent global crisis of COVID-19. We conducted a multivariate regression analysis by utilising a large dataset from Refinitiv, covering 48 countries over fourteen years. Our findings revealed a significant negative association between ESG performance and EDR, suggesting that higher ESG performance correlates with reduced accounting downside risk. The analysis further demonstrates that environmental and social components of ESG, closely aligned with the United Nations Global Compact Core Principles, play a crucial role in mitigating the adverse impact of the COVID-19 crisis, particularly in the primary economic sector. These results provide novel insights into the importance of sustainable practices in enhancing corporate resilience during times of global economic uncertainty

DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION AND EFFICIENCY: EVIDENCE FROM INDONESIAN BANKS

Recent studies suggest that digitalization does not uniformly enhance bank efficiency. A critical factor influencing this outcome is the size of the institution undergoing digital transformation (DT). Small and medium-sized commercial banks often encounter challenges such as limited financial resources and difficulty in adapting digital solutions that align with market conditions, thereby leading to DT failures. This study investigates the impact of DT on bank efficiency. Our analysis focuses on a sample of conventional Indonesian banks from 2015 to 2023. We also explore how digitalization affects the efficiency of both large and small banks. Regression analysis reveals nuanced findings. In large banks, the coefficient of DT2 does not significantly affect performance, whereas in small and medium-sized banks, it exhibits a statistically significant negative relationship. This suggests that digitalization influences bank performance non-linearly, posing different implications for banks of varying sizes. This study contributes to understanding the heterogeneous impacts of DT on bank efficiency, offering insights relevant not only to the Indonesian banking sector, but also to other emerging markets undertaking similar DT strategies

BRIDGING THE GAP: ORGANISATIONAL IDENTIFICATION AS A CATALYST FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL CONTRACT FULFILMENT AND KNOWLEDGE SHARING

This study sets out to investigate the influence of psychological contract fulfilment and organisational identification on knowledge sharing behaviour among knowledge workers. A survey-based study on 233 knowledge workers was conducted to investigate the direct and indirect effect of psychological contract fulfilment. Results show that organisational identification mediates the effect of psychological contract fulfilment on knowledge sharing behaviour. This study highlights the pertinence of fulfilling the underlying expectations of knowledge workers to encourage them to share their valuable knowledge. While numerous studies which employed the social exchange theory (SET) had attempted to identify specific factors that could encourage employee to initiate knowledge sharing, this study focused on the underlying process that could explain why these factors worked in encouraging knowledge sharing. Fundamentally, this study posited that when psychological contracts were not violated, employees tend to identify with their organisations better. Consequently, they share their valuable knowledge with others within the organisation

Influence of Monsoon Seasons on Seagrass Ecosystems on the Coast of Kota Kinabalu (Sabah, Malaysia)

Seagrass beds in Kampung Kebagu, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, are notably affected by natural events and human activities. Seasonal monsoons particularly the Northeast Monsoon (NEM) and the Southwest Monsoon (SWM), intensify these effects, causing significant changes to the seagrass beds in a short period. This study aimed to determine seagrass coverage and leaf length during the NEM and SWM at Kampung Kebagu. The leaf length was focusing on the dominant species; Enhalus acoroides along the transect line. This study was conducted within a year from February 2023 until January 2024 to cover both monsoon periods. Seagrass coverage was estimated using 50 cm × 50 cm (0.25 m2) quadrat with every 5 m interval along the transect line. Field measurements and data collection were done in February 2023, March 2023, May 2023, July 2023, September 2023, November 2023, and January 2024. The NEM was divided into two phases: February to March 2023 (T1) and November 2023 to January 2024 (T3). The SWM, identified as T2, spanned from May to September 2023. Further analysis of seagrass coverage and leaf length using Two-Way ANOVA was done to find significant effects of month between the parameters. There were significant different between seagrass coverage and months (p < 0.05). Seagrass coverage declined significantly to 38 ± 23% during the NEM but rebounded to 80 ± 11% in July 2023 during the SWM. The average leaf length of E. acoroides reached 29 ± 8 cm in May 2023 but was reduced to just 7 ± 2 cm by January 2024. Although this study was limited to a single year, it effectively captured fluctuations in seagrass coverage and leaf length across different seasonal monsoons. These results provide baseline data on how monsoon-related environmental changes affect seagrass ecosystems in this region

The IMPACT OF SOLVENCY POSITION ON BANKS’ PERFORMANCE IN MALAYSIA

Solvency position reflects a bank’s ability to meet its long-term financial obligations and serves as a key indicator of financial stability and performance. However, there is limited empirical evidence on how different solvency ratios influence bank performance in the Malaysian context. This study aims to examine the impact of solvency position on the performance of commercial banks in Malaysia. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed, covering a five-year period from 2018 to 2023. Secondary data were obtained from the annual reports of firms listed on Bursa Malaysia and analyzed using a panel data regression model via EViews version 12. The findings reveal that both the debt ratio and capital adequacy ratio have a statistically significant effect on return on equity, which serves as a proxy for bank performance. Conversely, the equity ratio does not exhibit a significant impact. Control variables such as bank size and interest rate also show no significant influence on performance. These results offer valuable insights for bank managers, investors, and policymakers, particularly in formulating effective capital management strategies and enhancing financial resilience within the Malaysian banking sector
