English as a Second Language (ESL) education in Malaysia holds significant importance in providing students with the essential global communication skills required for achieving academic and professional accomplishments (Kaya, 2022). According to (Secondary Education Regional Information Base, 2011), general secondaryeducation is offered by a variety of institutions, each with a unique programmed structure and duration. The majority of secondary education institutions typically provide the whole secondary cycle, which consists of two (2) years of upper secondary education and three (3) years of lower secondary education (Grades 7–11). Malaysia offers a variety of secondary education options, including military colleges run by the Ministry of Defence, MARA Junior Colleges run by the Council of Trust for the Bumiputera of Malaysia, regular secondary schools under the MOE's authority, regular secondary schools run by private organizations, and religious schools run by the Ministry of Education (MOE), state governments, or private organizations. The school that involved in this study is a government school which bears resemblance to SMK schools in Malaysia namely Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK) San Min. Nevertheless, SMJK schools are distinct in that they are commonly recognized as Chinese medium educational institutions, where Mandarin Chinese serves as the predominant language of instruction. The SMJK schools exhibit inclusivity by admitting students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, rather than exclusively catering to Chinese students. Indeed, a considerable number of non-Chinese students opt to enroll in SMJK schools due to their provision of a superior standard of education and a pronounced focus on scholastic excellence. It is important to acknowledge that SMJK schools receive government subsidies, albeit to a lesser extent compared to SMK schools. This implies that students enrolled in SMJK schools may still be required to make certain financial contributions towards their education, albeit at a comparatively reduced rate in comparison to private educational institutions. According to Rashid et al. (2022), for pupils to learn and be proficient in a language, vocabulary is crucial. Students who have a large vocabulary will find it easier to learn English and its four (4) main language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students may find it difficult to express their own thoughts and understand those of others if they lack a wide vocabulary. Furthermore, a variety of distinct word-learning strategies such as implementing technology and game-based learning are needed for children, and comprehension is more likely to be impacted by in-depth instruction (Rashid et al., 2022). Therefore, in order to increase students' vocabulary mastery, vocabulary instruction should be given a lot of weight in language teaching. The incorporation of technology into English as a Second Language (ESL) education has arisen as a potentially fruitful approach to augment language acquisition by promoting interactive and customized learning experiences (Alamri, 2021). Blooket, a learning platform that incorporates gamification, offers an inventive resource for fostering engagement among English as a Second Language (ESL) students through its interactive activities and games (Blooket, 2023). Nevertheless, the extent to which it is effective in the context of English as a Second Language (ESL) education in Malaysia has not been thoroughly investigated. This research aims to fill the existing research gap by examining the appropriateness of integrating Blooket into English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms, with a specific emphasis on its capacity to enhance vocabulary acquisition and foster student engagement. Through this endeavor, the primary objective is to disseminate knowledge regarding educational methodologies and make a valuable contribution to the advancement of English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction in Malaysia

This study examines the critical factors that influence employee perceptions of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) programme implementation in Malaysian organizations. In an era marked by heightened global sustainability awareness and significant corporate controversies related to ethical labour practices and governance lapses, understanding how internal stakeholders perceive ESG initiatives is paramount. Drawing upon psychological contract theory, agency theory, and stewardship theory, the research posits that key determinant—namely board independence, the adequacy of financial reporting and auditing, top management commitment, and transparency—play pivotal roles in shaping employees' trust and engagement with ESG programmes. A quantitative research design was adopted, with data collected via structured questionnaires distributed among employees in Glenmarie Industrial Park, Shah Alam. Advanced statistical techniques, including descriptive analysis and regression analysis using SPSS, were employed to analyse the relationships between the independent governance variables and employee perceptions of ESG effectiveness. The findings reveal that robust governance mechanisms and transparent communication strategies not only enhance the credibility of ESG initiatives but also promote a culture of sustainability that aligns with organizational values. Moreover, the study underscores that employees are more likely to actively support and participate in ESG efforts when they perceive a genuine commitment from both leadership and the broader corporate governance framework. This research contributes to the theoretical development of agency and stewardship theories by highlighting the significant role of internal stakeholder perceptions in the successful implementation of ESG programmes. The implications extend to practitioners and policymakers, suggesting that fostering an environment of trust and accountability is essential for achieving long-term corporate sustainability and competitive advantage. In Malaysia, growing concerns about mental health have highlighted the importance of psychological well-being among emerging adults. This developmental stage is often marked by inter and intrapersonal challenges, making it essential to explore factors that support and enhance their psychological well-being. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the relationship between pet companionship, sense of belonging, and psychological well-being among emerging adults in Malaysia. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, using purposive sampling to recruit 128 Malaysian emerging adults aged between 18 and 29 years. Data was collected through an online self-administered questionnaire. The instruments used in the study were Comfort from Companion Animals Scale (CCAS), Sense of Belonging Instrument – Psychological (SOBI-P), and Brief 18-item Psychological Well-Being Scale. The findings revealed that Malaysia emerging adults reported high levels of pet companionship, sense of belonging, and psychological well-being. A statistically significant positive relationship among the three variables. Meanwhile, both pet companionship and sense of belonging were strong predictors of psychological well-being. These findings provided theoretical support for the PERMA model from Seligman’s Well-Being Theory, also offer valuable insight for future study by highlighting the need to develop inclusive and culturally appropriate mental health interventions that incorporate both human-animal bonds and social affiliation strategies to enhance the psychological well-being of emerging adults within the Malaysian context

Factors affecting the relationship between alexithymia and moral decision-making among undergraduate students in Malaysia

    Get PDF
How do individuals living with alexithymia behave when they encounter an ethical dilemma? Will they choose a utilitarian or a deontological course of action? Past research found that alexithymia, a personality trait characterised by difficulty in identifying, understanding, and expressing emotions, was correlated with moral decision-making. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between alexithymia and moral decision-making among university students in Malaysia, and also the mediating roles of empathy and reasoning style (analytical versus intuitive) on the correlation. Additionally, the ethics position (idealism versus relativism), which is about the cognitions around moral judgements, was also examined along with moral decision-making in this study. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted with 90 university students in Malaysia aged 18 years old and above, using an online survey method. The instruments Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI), extended Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT), short Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ-5), and Gawronski’s Moral Dilemmas were applied to measure the variables. The mediating effects were analyzed by using the PROCESS macro mediation analysis. The findings reported that empathy fully mediates the relationship between alexithymia and idealism, instead of moral decision-making, and this relationship is positive. The present study offers new insights about alexithymia and moral decision-making, and this can be utilized as a reference for related future research

Augmentation strategies for plant disease classification

    Get PDF
This study explores the effectiveness of various data augmentation strategies for enhancing plant disease classification using the LeafGAN model. We propose a novel approach that integrates leaf region and disease symptom masking to improve the quality of synthetic images and, consequently, the performance of plant disease models. Three different configurations of the LeafGAN model were tested, with each model applying distinct masking techniques: LeafGAN with LFLSeg uses basic LeafGAN outputs, SingleMask-LeafGAN applies leaf region masking to isolate the leaf from the background, and DualMask-LeafGAN combines both leaf region and disease symptom masking for enhanced disease simulation. The models were evaluated based on their ability to generate realistic disease progression and recovery images, which were then used for data augmentation. Results show that DualMask-LeafGAN, incorporating both masking strategies, produced the most realistic and high-fidelity images, leading to superior augmentation quality. These findings highlight the potential of advanced data augmentation strategies in improving plant disease simulation, emphasizing the importance of targeted feature masking in enhancing the generalization and robustness of disease classification models in agricultural applications
