Emerging Issues and Solution to Examination Malpractices in Nigeria: Implication on Education Managers
Get PDFExamination in broad perspective is an instrument for test, assessment, evaluation andaccreditation. It is also used for the purpose of selection, placement, certification andpromotion. Unfortunately, examination malpractices tend to relegate certificates issued atdifferent levels of education. It becomes a societal problem as it is now being largelyperpetrated across all levels of education. Moral laxity, laziness on the part of the students,inadequate teachers, teaching and learning facilities, among others, are the causes ofexamination malpractices. Forms of Examination Malpractices and other related offencesare the two main forms of examination malpractices. The effects of examination malpracticesare that it makes parents spend unnecessary by looking for ‘orijo’ from teachers or workers inthe establishment; or pay for someone else to sit instead of their wards. It is noted thatstakeholders including parents, teachers, examination board officials, students andgovernments are to curb the examination malpractices. Among other recommendations, itwas suggested that all schools should teach good moral principles and all stakeholders shouldbe discouraged from cheating

Understanding Performance of Undergraduate Students in Trigonometry in South-West of Nigeria
Get PDFTrigonometry is a course that student’s first experience with mathematics beyond what theyhave learnt in the secondary school. It provides critical prerequisite skills for both physical andbiological science students. This study investigated the level of performance in trigonometryamong undergraduate students in the South-West Universities of Nigeria. The research designused in the study was a descriptive survey type. 150 undergraduate students from faculty ofscience were randomly selected from three (3) universities in the South-west region ofNigeria. Instrument used to gather data for this study was Trigonometry Achievement Test(TAT) (r = 0.78). The data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics and independentsample t-test at 5% level of significance. The results indicated that the level of performanceof majority of the undergraduate students in the trigonometry achievement test was good 94(62.7%) and 3 (2.0%) perform poorly. There was no significant mean differences inperformance based on the type of secondary school (public, private) graduated from(t(148)=1.426, p 0.05), while there was significant mean difference in performance basedon their area of study (t(148)=1.576, p 0.05. Based on these findings, it is recommendedthat lecturers teaching trigonometry course should consider all the different areas of study ofthe undergraduate students that are offering trigonometry course in order to enhance theirperformance in the course
Knowledge of Modern Contraceptives among Single Women in Universities in Kwara State, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study examined knowledge of modern contraceptives among single women in universitiesin Kwara State. Specifically, the study sought to examine differences in knowledge of moderncontraceptives based on age, religion and ethnicity among single women in universities inKwara State, Nigeria. A descriptive research design of a survey type was used. The populationfor the study comprised all final year single women across four Universities in Kwara State.Multistage sampling technique was used to sample 1996 respondents out of 7429 singlewomen. Descriptive method was used to analyze the demographic data while t-test andAnalysis of Variance were used to test the hypotheses set at 5% level of significance. Thefindings revealed that single women in universities in Kwara State had knowledge of moderncontraceptives. Single women less than 19 years had the highest knowledge of moderncontraceptives; Muslims had the higher knowledge of modern contraceptives and Hausashad the highest knowledge of modern contraceptives among final year single women inUniversities in Kwara State. The study concluded that age, religion and ethnicity causeddifferences in the knowledge of modern contraceptives among single women in Universitiesin Kwara State. Therefore, the study recommends that adequate modern contraceptiveinformation and messages be given to single women from 20 years of age, Christian singlewomen and those of Yoruba and Igbo ethnicit
English Language Teaching for National Development in Rivers State Nigeria

The aim of this research is to identifylanguage teaching in secondary schools as a pointer towards national development. Adescriptive survey research was used with 20 item questionnaires titled English LanguageTeaching for National Development (ELTND). This was done through quantitative datacollection. There were 300 respondents who were secondary school language teachers. Theanalysis was done through mean and standard deviation on 4 point rating scale. Findingsdemonstrated that language teaching is key for the overall national development

Italso identifies what Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is and theobjectives, which is meant for students to match their theoretical school knowledge with thepractical aspect of their training in Industry. Also, the issues and challenges faced by thestudents and industry were discussed. Hence, in order to effectively achieve the goals andobjectives of the Scheme (SIWES), it was recommended among others that orientationprogrammes should be conducted for students before embarking on Industrial Training exerciseso as to understand the objectives of SIWES and on the part of the Industry, the employershould be sensitized on the need to expose the trainees to such areas of training that wouldpositively contribute to their level of acquisition of Business Education skills. 
Law Library and National Development: Exploring the Connection

It also brings to the fore the need to regard law libraries as crucialinstitutions to the development of the nation. In addition, it remedies the lack of attentionreceived by law libraries in developing countries generally and advocates their strengtheningto perform the roles they are created for. National development is the dream of any developingcountry; these countries therefore strive to attain it by employing various means. However, inspite of the efforts made, national development still seems to be unattainable by many ofthem. This paper introduces the law library as an institution to be studied as it functions toultimately promote national development. The paper discusses the concept, overview andtypes of law libraries. The roles of the law library to national development are explored.Conclusion and recommendations are made, bringing attention and focus to giving priority toproper equipping and maintaining of law libraries. 
Community Resources Utilization and Teaching – Learning Activities of Social Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Ede South Local Government, Osun State, Nigeria
Get PDFThe study examined the Community Resources Utilization and Teaching-learning Activities ofSocial Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Ede South Local Government, Osun State,Nigeria. The research work covered both the public and private secondary schools in EdeSouth Local Government Area of Osun State. Two hundred and Fifty (250) Social Studiesteachers participated in the study. Self-structured questionnaire titled Community ResourcesUtilization and Teaching-learning Activities of Social Studies Questionnaire (CRUTLASQ) wasused to elicit information from the respondents. The respondents were drawn from Ten (10)Middle Schools, Five (5) Private Schools and Ten (10) Junior Secondary Schools using PurposiveSampling Technique. Ten teachers were selected from each school for the study. Three researchquestions were formulated. The result revealed that most of the teachers made use ofinstructional materials available (91.2%) and the usage has influenced students’ learning ofsocial studies (87.6%). It was concluded that the teaching ability of the teachers and thelearning ability of the students were enhanced with the use of community resources. Based onthe findings, it was then recommended that the teachers should ensure that Social Studies asa subject is taught using the community resources available to simplify teaching and aidlearning of the subject by teachers and students. Teachers should encourage tours to landmarkplaces and excursions of different kinds to further enhance students’ learning
Influence of Gender Factors on Workers’ Attitude towards Training Programmes in Selected Organizations in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria
Get PDFInfluence of gender factors on workers’ attitude towards training programme shows trainingas an instrument that brings about change for everyone in employment including women inorder to bring about positive attitude in organizations. However, there exists inequalities oftraining opportunities by gender in Nigeria. This is not because government deliberately putup any policy to deny women access to training but for the existence of some prejudice arisingfrom socio-cultural set-up which put the women at a disadvantaged position in our organizationshere in Nigeria. Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The study targetpopulation consists of employees in three (3) selected organizations with a total populationfor the study which is estimated at 6,800. However, a five percent (5%) of the total populationof each Organization were chosen as sample elements for the study which indicates that 325respondents were used. The data was collected through a questionnaire titled “influence ofgender factors on workers’ attitude towards training programmes in selected organizations inIbadan, Oyo state, Nigeria”. Simple random sampling technique was to select 325 respondentsused for the study. The data was collected through a questionnaire and analysis was doneusing Pearson r correlation to test 4 hypotheses at 5% level of significance. (r=.432, p<.05).The study established that there was significant relationship between gender factors andworkers’ attitude (r= 943, p<.05). The study also revealed that there was a significantrelationship between workers’ attitude and Age of last child (r=.751, p<.05). We also havesign relationship between Workers attitude and marital status (r=.762, p<.05). There isalso no significant influence between workers’ religious affiliation and workers attitude(r=.312, p<.05). There is no significant relationship observed between training on workers’Educational attainment and workers attitude (r=.148, p<.05). The implication of the above is to work towards avoiding the erroneous beliefs that women donot like to be involved or attend training programmes. Instead, government and people inplaces of authority in organizations should put necessary machinery in motion to makewomen get more involved, interested and attracted to training programmes in order to deriveincreased and maximum productivity from women through continuous training to achieveOrganizational goals and national development. 
Teaching Staff Talent and Knowledge Management Activities as Predictors of Competitive Secondary Education Delivery in Rivers State
Get PDFThe study investigated teaching staff talent and knowledge management activities as predictorsof competitive secondary education delivery in Rivers State. Two (2) research questions and2 hypotheses were answered and tested in the study, respectively. The population of the studywas the 268 public secondary schools in the state while the sample was 214 (80%) principalsselected from the population, using the simple random sampling technique. Respondents ofthe study responded to two validated instruments. These were the Teaching Staff Talent andKnowledge Management Scale (TSTKMS) and Competitive Secondary Education DeliveryIndex (CSEDI), designed by the researchers, in the modified 4-point Likert scale model withreliability index of 0.74 and 0.84, respectively. Linear regression was used in answering theresearch questions while t-test associated with linear regression was used in testing thehypotheses at 5% level of significance. The findings of the study show that teaching stafftalent and knowledge management exercises predicted competitive secondary educationdelivery by 20.2% and 25.2%, respectively and that there are significant predictions ofteaching staff talent and knowledge management exercises on competitive secondary educationdelivery in Rivers State. It was therefore concluded that deliberate teaching staff talent andknowledge management exercises are strong predictors of competitive secondary educationdelivery in Rivers State. Based on this, it is recommended that stakeholders in schooladministration should continue to ensure effective talent and knowledge management while making sure that they break new frontiers in order to keep abreast with current requirementsfor global competitiveness.
