Christians as Light and Salt in Matthew 5:13-14 and its Implications for Good Governance in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The attitude of many Christians in Nigeria to governance is generally poor and this has always had adverse effects on nation building. Going by its tenets and values, Christianity is a worthy religion whose adherents are expected to positively influence the systems they are part of, and so, Christians cannot afford to leave the governance of Nigeria into the hands of others. Unfortunately, Nigerian Christians are, at best, apathetic to political participation. In the Beatitudes, Jesus likened those who believed in Him to light and salt with an expectation that they would have good impacts on their immediate community. Apart from the fact that light and salt are essential to life, they are also change agents. However, as indispensable as they are, they cannot make any appreciable impact unless they are part of the system they are expected to influence. It is, therefore, imperative that Christians in Nigeria would resolve to be practically involved in the governance of the nation. In this paper, the authors will critically examine the description of Christians as light and salt of the world and, using exegetical and hermeneutical methods, the implications of these to good governance in Nigeria would be highlighted.&nbsp

Electricity Consumption and Economic Growth in Nigeria: : A Causality Test Approach

    No full text
Despite the important role of electricity in the growth process of an economy, deficiencies abound in the Nigeria electricity sectors which constitute a major concern. The study therefore examines the link between electricity consumption and economic growth in Nigeria collated within the period 1981-2019. Other cofounding variables included in the study are gross capital formation, labour force and government consumption expenditure. We used a vector autoregressive based on the Toda-Yamamoto approach to provide the framework for empirical analysis. The causality test result shows that a causal link runs from economic growth to electricity consumption but not the other way around. In terms of relative importance, the result shows that capital stock is more important in the economic growth process than electricity consumption. In summary, long-run causality runs from economic growth to electricity consumption thus confirming the conservation hypothesis for Nigeria. Going by the results, reducing distribution and transmission losses can improve electricity conservation in Nigeria.&nbsp

Every secondary school leaver that is intended to study any science course in an institution of higher learning is expected to have passed physics subject at credit level as one of the prerequisites. However, the number of those who fail physics subject at West African Senior School Certificate Examination (W.A.S.S.C.E.) is on the rise yearly, thereby, leaving parents and guardians worried. On the premise, this study investigated the influence of students’ learning readiness and teachers’ classroom management on senior secondary school three students’ academic achievement in physics in Oyo State. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design and made use of a sample of 590 selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Data collected were analysed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). The independent variables had significant relationship with the academic achievement of students in physics. These were self-efficacy (r = 0.733; P < 0.05), self-directed learning (r = 0.549; P < 0.05), verbal instruction (r = 0.871; P < 0.05) and corporal punishment (r = 0.658; P < 0.05). The study concluded that students’ learning readiness and classroom management have been adjudged to have contributed immensely to the academic achievement of students in physics. It is recommended that students should throw themselves fully into what they want to achieve in their careers. In other words, they should be committed to their goals. The purpose of this paper is to review some Psychometric instruments commonly utilised in the Work-Family Conflict Studies and to adopt them for use among the Nigerian study populations. Broadly speaking, the majority of the Psychometric instruments used in conducting research in Africa vis-a-viz, Nigeria are alien and foreign to these researchers. In order to have to be validated to suit local use, this is the gap, vacuum and loophole that this study seeks to fill. Validity and reliability analyses of these Psychometric instruments for use among the Nigerian populations were determined by administering the questionnaires on a sample of 100 participants randomly selected from 375 staff of the University of Benin, Benin City South-South Nigeria and whose results were not included in the main study. Validity and reliability analyses were evaluated with the Cronbach alpha coefficient by utilising the IBM statistical package for the social scientists (IBM SPSS) version 22 for windows with an alpha correlation coefficient of between 0.71 and 0.86 the results showed that the Psychometric instruments were valid and reliable for Nigerian study populations. The study recommends that more studies of this nature should be undertaken by Work-Family Conflict Researchers.&nbsp

In every woman’s life, pregnancy is the greatest period where nutrition is the main significance for ideal pregnancy result. During this period, there is high demand of nutrients from the mother to the growing foetus. This paper focused on review of nutritional status and factors affecting dietary practices among pregnant women. Based on review, findings revealed that adequate dietary practices is crucial during pregnancy in order to ensure that correct energy and nutrient is provided to the developing foetus. Similarly, steady diet during pregnancy is essential for the well-being of both mother and the foetus. Pregnant women’s nutritional status and health influence the foetus health and survival due to the biological relationship between mother and child. Poor dietary practices result to insufficient maternal nutrition which leads to problems such as low birth weight, pre-term birth, Intra Uterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and infant mortality. Furthermore, socioeconomic status, household food security status, maternal and cultural factors affect dietary practices among pregnant women. During pregnancy, consumption of suitable nutritional food diet is important for women in order to supply the energy and nutrients required to the foetus. Moreover, pregnant women need to be enlightened on significance of dietary practices to their health and unborn child. Likewise, awareness needs to be created on importance of consumption of adequate food diet and sustaining healthy life during pregnancy.&nbsp

Livelihood assets are basic resources through which individuals’ livelihoods are being built. The study assessed the five core assets (physical, natural, social, financial and human assets) of rural women in South-Western, Nigeria. The study was designed to examine the access to assets, level of livelihood assets of rural women across two stratified vegetation zones. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select rural women from two distinct vegetation zones namely the Derived Savannah Zone (DSZ) and the Coastal Vegetation Zone (CVZ). Primary data were collected with the aid of a structured interview schedule and analysed with descriptive statistics (frequency, percentages and means) and T-test analysis. The study revealed that women from both zones in DSZ (76.8%) and CVZ (76.6%) had low access to assets. The result of analysis also indicated that women from both zones had low access to the four assets measured in the study (though the degree varied from one asset to another). However, majority had high access to financial capital. It is concluded that the level of livelihood assets was generally low across the two stratified vegetation zones in the study area. It was recommended that rural credit institutions should be provided by government agencies. There is also a need for the provision of physical assets such as improved production and processing machines by governmental organisations and international agencies in order to improve the livelihood assets of the women in rural communities.&nbsp
