    No full text
The influence of leadership style(s) to the success and overall effectiveness of public universities in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized. In this paper, the study investigated the impact of leadership styles on performance of public universities in Nigeria. The work specifically examined how democratic leadership style impact on academic performance in public universities in Nigeria; and lastly, evaluates the impact of autocratic leadership style on quality of education in public universities in Nigeria. To achieve the spelt objectives, the study utilized survey design; and data was collected though a self-administered questionnaire from a number of 275 respondents who were staff of three randomly selected public universities in south east, Nigeria. The result from the data analyses showed that democratic leadership style impacted positively on academic performance of students in public universities in Nigeria. Lastly, autocratic leadership style was also identified to have impacted positively on quality of education in public universities in Nigeria. The work among other things, recommended that public universities should ensure that they harness the leadership style(s) so well because they are pertinent to their success. They should make sure that academic and non- academic staff understand and implement the government policies guiding their existence, and also, the leadership style(s) being used should be clear to everyone

A well-developed internal party democracy is one of the factors that make for credible elections. African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG), an arm of the African Union is determined to promote and strengthen good governance through the institutionalization of transparency, accountability and participatory democracy throughout Africa. This paper examined the impact of ACDEG on leadership recruitment in Nigeria using the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as its focus of analysis. It aimed to investigate: how the inability to implement the ACDEG guidelines affected internal party democracy of PDP; the relationship between incumbent factors and impositions of candidates of PDP; and the extent to which Nigeria’s electoral institutions complied with the ACDEG’s guidelines on monitoring of party activities during the period 2010-2020. The study adopted the elite theory as its framework of analysis and the ex-post-facto research design. It found that the inability of PDP to abide by ACDEG’s guidelines undermined its internal democracy; that there was relationship between incumbent factor and imposition of candidates in PDP; and that Nigeria’s electoral institutions did not comply substantially with the ACDEG’s guidelines on monitoring of party activities between 2010 and 2020. We recommended, among other things, the overhauling of Nigeria’s electoral laws to bring them in conformity with the ACDEG guidelines

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices toward COVID-19 Prevention among University Students in Enugu State University of Science and 'technology

    No full text
Coronavirus is a global pandemic that has adversely disrupted social, political, and economic as well as educational activities in the world. Reports have shown reductions in the rate of school enrollment, changes in the mode of learning, poor funding, and death of students as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic. Global efforts to prevent the virus and reduce mortality from the disease including manufacturing of the vaccine seemed to have not solved all the COVID l9 related challenges. The population of Nigerian undergraduate students is more than 2 million and it is still unclear the knowledge, attitudes, and practices on COVID-19 prevention among students in Enugu State, Nigeria. This study was undertaken to assess KAP among undergraduates in Enugu State (University of Science and Technology ESUT). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 364 randomly selected undergraduate students. An online structured questionnaire was used to collect the data and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results repealed that students have fairly good knowledge about the disease, however, there is a negative attitude and poor practice towards the disease prevention especially on COVID l9 vaccination. There is a need to embark on a youth-friendly COVID l9 comprehensive prevention measure in universities so that students can make an informed decision toward COVID l9 prevention

COST OF CAPITAL: METHODOLOGY OF COMPUTATION REWIEW

    Get PDF
The paper reviewed various literatures on of cost of Capital to examine and identify the feasible methods for this phenomenon. The methodology of computation that has been in use for the period has not changed. Though different methods have been presented by the several writers but none has been generally accepted in literature. Most of the studies on cost of capital and information asymmetry used CAPM, while majority on other studies mostly used implied cost of capital (ICC).The obvious advantage of this reverse approach (ICC) is that estimates of the expected rate of return are based on forecasts rather than extrapolation from historical data (estimates via market model, the empirical of the Sharpe-Linter capital asset pricing model, or variants of the Fama & French (1992) three/four model). If Cost of Capital should be in predictable cost form, then, the appropriate valuation model should use forecasted cash flows

IMPACT OF CASH CONVERSION CYCLE AND PROFITABILITY OF SELECTED CHEMICAL AND PAINT FIRM IN NIGERIA

    Get PDF
This study investigated the impact of cash conversion cycle on profitability of selected chemical and paint firms in Nigerian for the period, 2000-2013. Adopting the (CCC)cash conversion cycle (accounts collection period plus inventory conversion period minus accounts payable period) as independent variable and gross operating profit as dependent variable and controlling for liquidity, financial assets to total assets (FATA), SIZE and leverage (DR), the study revealed that cash conversion cycle of selected chemical and paint firms in Nigerian has a positive though non significant impact on profitability and thus implies that, either longer or shorter, it take the companies to sell their inventories, has no influence on profitability. In order words, the period between the expenditure for the purchases of raw materials and the collection of sales from finished goods has no impact on the profitability of sampled chemical and paint firms in Nigeria. This suggests that, though longer CCC is good for explaining the financial success of selected chemical and paint firms in Nigeria, it is not a critical factor to consider when taking decision to improve profitability. The result also revealed that financial asset to total assets as a control variable has a significant positive impact on value and profitability of the sampled firms. This means, that increasing in the level of financial assets to total assets will lead to increase in the profitability and value of the sampled firms, since the financial assets are brought in for profitability purpose

Spatio-temporal land cover dynamics and emerging landscape patterns in western part of Lagos State, Nigeria

Lagos State, which is home to Lagos metropolis and the eighteenth largest urban agglomeration in 2018 in the world, has been characterized by rapid urbanization. An earlier study of the eastern segment of the state revealed dramatic urban growth in previously rural local councils where it replaced mostly ecological assets. For a statewide view of the landscape pattern changes, this study examined the western segment of the state to characterize the magnitude and trend of these changes. This was done with Landsat images for 1984, 2006 and 2015 along with ENVI 5.0 software and FRAGSTATS v.4.2 spatial pattern analysis program. Results show that cumulatively, the ecological assets, which comprised 75% of the area in 1984, have been whittled down to about 34% by 2015 having been lost through urban development. At the council level in 2015, the highest growth areas, in decreasing order of magnitude, were Alimosho, Badagry, Ojo and Amuwo Odofin local government areas. Both class and landscape-level metrics confirmed the dominance and fragmentation of the resultant landscape in 2015 by urban development. In 1984, vegetation dominated the landscape at 55% coverage and was the largest feature with the highest area-weighted contiguity or connectedness index. Thirty-one years later in 2015, built-up areas were the dominant patch with 54% coverage and the highest contiguity and area-weighted contiguity index, higher than vegetation. These findings have narrowed the information gap about the spatial and temporal changes in the ecological assets of the western segment of Lagos State as a result of rapid urban expansion

The outbreak of different airborne diseases such as COVID19 has led to the wearing and extensive use of face masks to help control the speed of this diseases from one person to the other. Masks are design in such a way that bacterial, virus and fungal cells can not easily be transmitted from person to person. this study was aimed at determining the microorganisms that could be found on daily used face masks of Godfrey Okoye students. a total of 20 face masks were used for this study, 10 were distributed to male and female students and worn for 24 hours, collection of sample was done using damp swab stick to swab the inner and front part of the face masks

TAX POLICY AND PLANNING: LESSONS FROM DEVELOPED COUNTRIES

    Get PDF
Abstract One of the fundamental issues in developing countries is how to evolve tax policies that can generate sufficient revenue for government activities. Consequent upon the above, this study examined tax policies and planning in developing sub-Saharan African countries. It adopted table content analysis and descriptive statistics in its methodology. The study observed that aggressive tax planning which the Multi-National Corporations execute through royalty payment, interest payment, strategic transfer pricing and treaty shopping, among others, has caused countries around the globe huge revenue losses annually and has become a matter of serious concern to both the developed and developing economies. The implication of this is that achievement of objectives of tax policies and their reforms will remain a mirage in sub-Saharan African countries. The study concluded that the prevalence of illicit financial outflows in the form of tax evasion and avoidance in the guise of aggressive tax planning by multinational corporations, however, makes Africa’s tax policies worse. It was recommended that the Organization for Economic Corporation and Development, and the G-20 should involve developing countries in the Base Erosion and Profit Shifting project as they are the worst victims of these activities.
