THE IMPACT OF IGWEBUIKE IDEOLOGY ON PEACE BUILDING IN AFRICAN
African continent had perceived group soldering as the greatest strategies to tackle difficult and tedious challenges that torment human society. It is an ideology that rose from the natural and spontaneous communalistic spirit in the people's collective relationships. Igwebuike is an Igbo Language which literally means large number is strength. It is a concept that has been developed by Prof. Kanu Ikechukwu Anthony within the context of the underlying principle of African philosophy, religion and culture. The basic ideology there is that united majority is aviable machinery in solving group or members' problems. This paper therefore aims at re-focusing on how Igwebuike as an ideology can be adopted in Africa to provide lasting peace in Africa and among African states and people. The research observes that serious concern is not given to the Igwebuike ideology on the area of peace build. Attention was very much on application of the ideology for economic gains, group opposition attacks and for political gains. The research recommends that earnest concern should be given to this ideology throughout Africa with the use of age –grade system, communal worship system, women folk, kinship system, to mention but a few. The research adopted historical and sociological approaches. Data were sourced from both primary and secondary means. Data were analyzed with phenomenological method of data analysi
SEX DIFFERENTIALS IN STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT AND INTEREST IN TRIGONOMETRY USING INQUIRY TEACHING METHOD (ITM)
The study determined differentials in students’ achievement and interest in trigonometry
using Inquiry Teaching Method (ITM) (ITM). The study was guided by two (2) research
questions and four (4) research hypotheses. The design of this study was non-equivalent
control quasi-experimental research. The sample size of the study was four hundred and
fifty-six (456) Senior Secondary School Students One (SSS 1) in the three (3) sampled
coeducational secondary schools in Enugu Education zone. Hence, the researcher
sampled two hundred and forty-seven (247) male Senior Secondary School Students One
(SSS 1) and two hundred and nine (209) female Senior Secondary School Students One
(SSS 1). Trigonometry Achievement Test (TAT) and Trigonometry Interest Scale (TIS)
were the instruments that were used for data collection, which underwent face validation
only and were reliable with the K-R20 coefficient of 0.78 and Cronbach Alpha of 0.74
respectively. Mean ( ) and standard deviation ( ) were used in answering the research
questions. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used in testing the research
hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level. The study discovered the female students that taught
trigonometry using the Inquiry Teaching Method (ITM)had the higher posttest mean
achievement and interest scores than their male counterparts and the differences were
significant. Secondly, the study discovered that there were significant interactions
between gender of students and the methods on students’ achievement and interest scores
in Trigonometry. The study recommended that parents and mathematics teachers should
ensure that the male students are given equal functions with their female counterparts
both at home and in school to do so that it won’t be difficult for the male students to
transfer the knowledge learnt at home to school Mathematics (trigonometry)
Governance and development in Nigeria: An appraisal
Development is gradual but complete reorganization and mobilization of the entire social
system. The purpose of development is a rise in the level and quality of life of the population.
Development is more than improvements in the people’s well-being: it also describes the
capacity of the system to provide the circumstances for that continued well-being. Corruption
is deeply rooted in the Nigerian society and it destroys any form of development endeavor.
Embezzlement of public funds and other fraudulent practices and moreover the government is
not citizen based. Ethnic group membership breeds ethnic consciousness or ethnicity which
influence interaction between people and groups in Nigeria. The absence of good governance
in Nigeria has been extremely damaging to the government's corrective intervention role,
particularly in the maintenance of peace and security, as well as the promotion of economic
growth and the creation of the wealth needed to confront poverty and improve human
development. The research found out that inequality has not allowed Nigeria to embrace
sustainable development. This work concludes that Nigeria’s being the Africa's largest
economy and one of the sixth growing economies in the world is still unable to resolve the irony
of poverty in spite of the abundant human and material resources. The research recommends
that it is needful for the government at all levels to wake up with renewed strength and
commitment to reduce or totally eradicating the plague of poverty in Nigeria. Nigerian
government should ensure that governance is inclusive of women and youth, who have
historically been marginalized, as well as cultivate transformative leadership at all levels of
government
EFFECT OF INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF GOVERNMENT STUDIES CURRICULUM CONTENT IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU STATE
This study is on the effect of innovative instructional methods in the implementation
of Government Studies Curriculum in senior secondary schools in Enugu State. The
population for the study is 348 teachers that teach government as a subject in the whole
secondary schools in Enugu State. Questionaire was the instrument used for data
collection. The instrument was tested using Cronbach Alpha reliability index formula.
The reliability was established using Kudder Richardson formula 20 (K-R20) to obtain
reliability coefficient of 0.86. One research question and one hypothesis guided the
study. The hypothesis was tested using t-test statistics at 0.5 level of significance and
appropriate degree of freedom. Purposive sampling was used for the sampling
technique. The finding shows that innovative instructional methods of teaching effect
positively the implementation of government curriculum in senior secondary schools
in Enugu State. Generally, the educational implication is that teachers employ
innovative instructional methods in the implementation of government studies
curriculum content in secondary schools in Enugu state is very encouraging
EMERGENCY REMOTE TEACHING DURING THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN: A FOCUS ON ENUGU SCHOOL, ON THE RADIO PROGRAMME OF THE FEDERAL RADIO CORPORATION OF NIGERIA (FRCN)
Global digitization of learning mitigates the education
loss caused by school-closures during the COVID-19
lockdown globally, but few studies examine the awareness
and participation level of the target audience, as well as
factors that influence their participation and engagement
level to address such concerns. To fill this gap, we adopted
a mixed method approach on “Enugu School on Radio
Program of FRCN” using 184 senior secondary school
students from public schools and 192 senior secondary
school students in private schools. We found that students
in both schools are highly aware of Enugu School on
Radio (71% and 78%) respectively. Despite this high level
of awareness, only 13.9% of participants in public schools
and 20.7% of participants in private school participated
actively in terms of submitting their assignments to
teachers for evaluation. This study also reveals that there
are varying factors to these effects: ranging from a lack
of trust on the part of the students (15%, 14%) to a lack of
access to internet/digital devices especially for
participants in public schools (34%), as opposed to (21%)
for those in private schools. The study also exposed that
lack of parental support especially for students in private
school (39%) and 33% for public schools hindered the
participants from participating actively. The students in
public schools who didn’t participate because they
normally forget it is at (12%), while in private school it is
at (11%). We argue that helping students to have access
to the internet/digital devices as well as maximum
parental support with sufficient campaign on perceived
benefits of remote/online learning from media
practitioners will burst students trusts/ participation in
remote/online learning
Effect of Oil Price Fluctuations on Nigeria's Exchange Rate Movements
For some time now, development of financial markets in developing countries of the world has been saddled with a lot of controversies. Furthermore, observations from many studies showed contradictory views which have made debates on the subject matter inconclusive. In view of this, the general objective of this study is to examine financial and stock market developmental issues in developing African countries. It specifically intends to highlight strategies to strengthen financial and stock markets in African countries, among others. The study adopted table content analysis and descriptive statistics in its methodology. The study discovered that in spite of all the gains derivable from financial market development, the intensity of financial sector reforms implemented in some developing countries has not brought about a reasonable increase in the size and depth of their financial systems, among others. The implication of this is that capital market development in these developing countries would continue to suffer setbacks with their attendant consequences on economic growth. The study concluded that the presence of strong and virile financial and stock markets cannot be overlooked in any economy. It therefore recommended, amidst others, the promotion of institutional investors as well as development of appropriate business and investor friendly policies. Keywords: finance, stock market, developmental issues, African countries
EXTENT OF AVAILABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY OF INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIA FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING GOVERNMENT IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU EDUCATION ZONE, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA
The main purpose of the study was to determine the extent of
the availability and accessibility of instructional media for the
teaching and learning of Government in senior secondary
schools in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu State, Nigeria.
The study adopted a quantitative research paradigm,
specifically, the descriptive survey design. The sample of the
study comprised of 345 senior secondary school II (SS II)
students of Government and 15 teachers of Government from
10 public senior secondary schools in the Zone. Two research
questions and Two null hypotheses guided the study.
Checklist and structured questionnaire captioned
“Availability of Instructional Media checklist” (AIMC) and
“Accessibility of Instructional Media Questionnaire” (AIMQ)
were used to collect data for the study. Arithmetic mean and
standard deviation were used to answer the research
questions. Independent sample t-test was used to test the
hypotheses at 0.05 significance level. The result of the study
showed that: Instructional media required for effective
teaching and learning of Government in senior secondary
schools in Enugu education zone are inadequate. However,
the available instructional media were accessible to teachers
and students during teaching and learning of Government.
The educational implication of the findings is that poor
performance of students in Government will continue to be
on the increase unless there is adequate instructional media
for the implementation of the curriculum. The study therefore
recommends among other things that teachers of
Government should always improvise if there are no available
instructional media for effective teaching and learning
process and for enhance students’ performance in the subject
EFFECT OF BUDGET IMPLEMENTATION ON NIGERIA’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
: The impact of an increasing size of government operations on economic growth has become an emerging major
public debate. Nigeria's public expenditure has been increasing year by year, mainly for the purpose of boosting her
economic development. Unfortunately, the achievement of this objective has continued to elude the country. The major aim
of this study was to determine how budget implementation by Nigeria affected her economic development during the period
from 2000 to 2016. Specifically, the study sought to examine the effects of public capital and recurrent expenditures on
Nigeria’s real gross domestic product. Using the variables’ data retrieved from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical
Bulletin 2017, the study employed the ex post facto research design. The E-Views statistical software was employed to carry
out multiple linear regression of the time series data. The results of the study showed that government capital and
recurrent expenditures during the period had negative and non - significant effects on Nigeria’s real gross domestic
product. These results suggest that due process was compromised at the budget implementation stage. The study
recommends that government should ensure the strict adherence to due process in the implementation of its annual budgets.
Future studies can be centered on assessing how the established linkages can be complemented with other policy variables
so as to engender positive outcomes on economic growth
EXCHANGE RATE AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA
This paper examined the effect of exchange rate on the economic
growth of Nigeria. It specifically looked at effect of exchange rate on gross
domestic product (GDP), gross national product (GNP) and unemployment.
Secondary data from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin were
collected for a period of ten years, 2009 to 2018. Ex-post facto research design
was utilized. While some diagnostic tests were carried out to confirm the integrity
of the data and their relatedness in both short and long term basis, Ordinary
Least Square technique was employed in the analysis of hypotheses. It was found
that while exchange rate had significant effect on GDP and GNP, it was nonsignificant on unemployment. This implies that micro economic indices of GDP
and GNP could be used to consciously adjust standard of living of the citizens.
The study concludes that exchange rate should be handled with utmost concern
by experts in the field to avoid unnecessary fluctuations that may inflict
unbearable economic consequences on the Nigerian people. The study
recommends, among others, the adoption of policies that will affect GDP in such
a way that the welfare of the people can be upgraded
NATIONAL POLICY ON EDUCATION IN NIGERIA
Education in Nigeria is an instrument par excellence for effecting national development. It has witnessed active participation by non-governmental agencies, communities, and individuals as well as government intervention. It is, therefore, desirable for the nation to spell out in clear and unequivocal terms the philosophy and objectives that underlie its investment in education. The National Policy on Education seeks to fulfill that role. Government has stated that for the benefit of all citizens, the country’s educational goals shall be clearly set out in terms of their relevance to the needs of the individuals and those of the society, in consonance with the realities of our environment and the modern world. The need for a national policy on education came about as a result of the 1969 National Curriculum Conference which was attended by a cross section of Nigerians. The conference was a culmination of expressions of general dissatisfaction with the exiting education system which has become irrelevant to national needs, aspirations and goals. After the National Curriculum Conference, a seminar of participants drawn from a wide range of interest groups within Nigeria was convened in 1ST3 ~he seminar, which included voluntary agencies and external bodies, deliberated on what a national policy on education for an independent and sovereign Nigeria should be. The outcome of the seminar was a draft document which, after due comments were received from the states and other interest groups, led to the final document, the National Policy on Education, first published in 1977, the 2nd and 3rd editions were published in 1981 and 1993 respectively in keeping with the dynamics of social change and the demands on education. The fourth edition was in 2004. This edition was necessitated by some policy innovations and changes, and the need to update the 3rd edition (1998) .the fifth edition was published in 2007 while the six edition in 2013
