    India has been named the world's fastest-growing major economy four times in the last five years, owing to surging demand for goods and services. Today, the logistics sector contributes 5% to India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Each year, India transports 4.6 billion tonnes of cargo at a cost of INR 9.5 lakh crore. Most of these items are transported via trucks and other modes of transport (71%). Recognizing the sector's critical role in the future development of the country, many initiatives must be done to improve logistics performance. The Indian government has already taken several steps, including building infrastructure, enacting policies, and programmes such as "Make in India," and integrating technological and digital improvements into the logistical supply chain. However, there is still more work to be done. Despite having one of the largest and fastest-growing logistics businesses in the world, India's Logistics Performance Index (LPI) is ranked 44th in the world. According to NITI Aayog research, transportation demand exceeded 3 trillion tonne-kms in 2020 and will reach 15.6 trillion tonne-kms by 2050. This activity will stimulate growth in all modes of freight transport, but particularly in road freight. By 2050, freight vehicles on Indian roads would have to travel over three trillion kilometres. Such increased demand could have a detrimental effect on the current road transportation business. Several concerns have been identified, including the inefficiency of India's existing truck system; multi-axle trucks are underpowered, spend excessive energy, vehicles are overloaded, and vehicle technology are antiquated. All these issues can be addressed by utilising a Modular Truck system. Modular trucks, also known as Longer and Heavier Vehicles (LHVs), enable the combining of current loading units or modules to create longer and, in some circumstances, heavier vehicle combinations suitable for usage on sections of the road network. This technology is known in Europe as the 'European Modular System' (EMS) and in Australia as 'Road Trains'. This vehicle is more powerful than the present generation of India's anaemic multi-axle rigid trucks. The Indian government has already expanded truck capacity and trailer switching; limited the use of wood in truck cabins; and implemented a new scrappage policy. Increased productivity requirements and the use of hub-spoke logistics will have adetrimental effect on existing vehicles. Modular systems have not been deployed in India yet, and no considerable research has been undertaken to determine their practicality. Though this technology merits additional investigation due to its high-powered, fully-telematic, and efficient nature, as well as the truck's extended length, which aids in hauling more freight. Given that most goods transported by road are volume sensitive, a truck's additional length outweighs its increased weight capacity. This research will aid in rediscovering the benefits of modular truck systems in the Indian context, bringing them up to pace with worldwide freight systems. After establishing a broad area of interest, the study's necessity was established, and several types of modular truck systems in use throughout the world were investigated. Aims, objectives, scope, and constraints are formed by study and analysis. The JNPT port has been chosen as the location for the study, and data will be obtained from freight forwarders. Following that, a questionnaire for the interviews and a site survey will be completed. Primary research and visits to appropriate authorities will provide extensive information, and additional material will be gathered from secondary sources. From the obtained data, a cost and environmental emission benefits will be done to aid in the comprehension of the Modular Truck system's benefits

    Transportation being a fast-paced industry, is a large contributor towards carbon emission and global climate change. Considering more than half of the population residing in cities, mobility plays a crucial role when it comes to the overall functioning of urban areas and the quality of life of citizens. Increased demand and usage of personal motorized vehicles in urban areas is responsible for excessive emission levels, air & noise pollution that have had a significant impact on the social and environmental aspects our society. Poor public transit infrastructure, continuous progressive development of the cities, or increasing traffic congestion due to rapid urbanization are some of the pertaining issues of transport in urban areas and to address these problems, the need for environmentally feasible solutions is identified. Micromobility is an up-and-coming sustainable alternative which aims at providing various options for short distance trips that include first and last mile connectivity. With multifarious benefits such as cost efficiency, sustainable and a flexible mode of on-demand transport, it is a promising approach towards bridging the gap between sustainability and transport due to its potential for reducing our reliance on motorized vehicles especially for short distances. The study area taken for the dissertation is the sub-city of Dwarka located in the South-West district of National Capital Territory of Delhi and is one of the most sought-after residential sub-city. The main study area consisted of 8 sectors within the core of Dwarka sub-city which has a robust road network and being wellconnected by Delhi Metro (MRTS) but experiences inefficiency w.r.t connectivity through buses i.e., insufficient availability and inadequate frequency of buses. The inefficient public transport and growing population in the area is accompanied by increased usage of personal vehicles. To further enhance the research, an extensive household survey was conducted through cluster sampling method to understand the need for the modal shift to sustainable alternatives and perception of people towards various modes of micromobility. Following a disaggregate model to understand the trends and patterns, the household survey included open-ended questions to understand the perception of people & their willingness to use different modes of micromobility which were considered for the study. The results from the site visit and household survey depicted the high dependence of people on private motorized vehicles like 2 & 4 wheelers even for short trips less than 5 Km for purposes like grocery shopping, trip to nearest metro stations/bus stops, recreational trips etc. These observations validated the need for a sustainable alternative for short trips. From the 3 modes of micromobility selected for the study (bicycles, e-bicycles and e-scooters), the survey also included questions for understanding the perception of the potential user group towards usage of micromobility which showed that preference for using e-bicycles over the other 2 modes as a shared service for the study area was higher. The analysis facilitated the proposal stage by providing essential information required for implementing a sustainable transport solution. The aim of the thesis is to assess the potential for recommending a strategy for implementing a micromobility (e-bicycle) sharing system which also covers identification of potential docking stations (infrastructure) and operational requirements for operating the shared service within the study area as a pilot project

    Cites always have been a center of attraction for all people looking for opportunities to make a better life or a better living and so is reflected in the economic contribution of these cities to the growth of a nation. This economic contribution is also dependent on people of the city also. Which makes this a self-feeding cycle, more the economic opportunities in the city, more the influx of people, driving the growth of the city further and making more economic opportunities. Such is the case of Mumbai, a metropolitan that without failure has continued to reinvent itself to be a center of growth. From being dependent on the Primary sector (seaports, fisheries) then transitioning to the secondary sector (textile mills) subsequently to the tertiary sector (national financial capital), Mumbai is and has been on an upwards trend since then, so much so that Maharashtra has the highest contribution nation’s economy. Out of this contribution, 58% comes from the tertiary sector and as a result, one can see a certain group of India's population become the huge immigrant population to the city. Migration data (census 2011) shows the same, compared to any other state more people move to Mumbai (Maharashtra) for work and education opportunity and out of all the people who move to Mumbai the age group 18-35 is the highest in number. These are the young people who are in a transitory stage of their life where in they move from city to city looking for work and education opportunities and as a result become a important of city and nations economy. Making the biggestcontribution to the GDP and widely called as nation’s biggest asset is the youth of the nation, 35%of India’s total population lies under the age of 30. These educated young Indians attract huge investments from Banking, IT, and many other industries looking for skilled people. While there is a growth in the percentage of young Indians (under the age of 26) who are now buying houses, this pattern takes a turn around in Mumbai where the rate is falling continuously. Not only that city has constantly failed to come up with a proper way to accommodate all the people who move in, so much so that the only way of getting a home in Mumbai for most of the working class is indulging in illegal built projects or slums. The old idea of what a house should be also adds to this problem. Our outlook on what constitutes as a necessary element of the home need to change and adapt to the lifestyle of these young Indians. Hence this thesis aims to look at housing for young people from a different perspective. It aims to create an affordable housing solution for young people that is molded around their needs

    Application of CA-Markov model for the analysis of urban growth in Rohtak city

    The Modelling and Simulation of land cover change are fundamental to the evaluation of successive environmental effects. In modelling several factors that are interacting with each other at the local or micro level in a non-linear way. In this research, an attempt has been made to predict urban growth by using the cellular automata- Markov model to predict the urban growth of Rohtak city. Rohtak is one of the 8 priority towns of the NCR region, and it lies 70 km from Delhi. The method applied for this research consists of the following steps. Started with the collection of remote sensing data from 1985 to 2022 and supervised classification was performed. From analysis, aerial increase and direction of growth were determined. The change analysis on Terrset Geospatial Monitoring and Modelling system gain and losses from 1995 to 2021 was calculated. Map transition from the vegetation to built up, barren to built up and water to built maps were created. From literature parameters such as distance from CBD, distance from roads, distance from the district centre, population density and environmental factors were selected. These are variable parameters with the static role and their Euclidean distance was created on maps. Run the transition sub-model with 4 hidden and with 15,000 iterations. As a result, generation map transition potential was created. A probability matrix with built-up, water, vegetation and barren land according to their weightage. Markov model used on these transition potential maps and prediction map with defined years can be created. As an outcome, we get projected transition potential and projected land cover. Validation is done with a comparison with the previous map and false positives were determined. From the analysis, we get vegetation is changing to built up at a rapid pace and need attention so that environment can be conserved

    Cities in developing countries have seen massive in-migration of people from the countryside looking for work and a place to call home. Poor individuals (lower income migrants), the majority of whom are from rural regions, cannot afford the high rents in cities, the lack of adequate low-cost housing, and poor government planning that support the supply side of informal housing. As a result, wherever they find land, public or private, they begin to live there in temporary hutments; as years progress, more people join them, and the region quickly becomes informal housing (slums). According to the World Bank survey in 2018, 35.2 % of India's urban population lives in informal housing. Insufficient resources to provide suitable housing and essential services to residents lead to poverty, unemployment, traffic congestion, environmental pollution, scarcity of land, inappropriate land use, skyrocketing land value, insecure tenure, etc. It poses a burden to the government and planners. Moreover, informal housing restoration and upliftment programs require special funds, affecting the economy. Also, it indirectly affects the nation socially, economically, and politically and creates pressure on un-used, unprotected, and un-suitable public land. Due to a lack of timely information and people's lack of consideration for such things in the absence of any other option, planning regulations in informal urban housing are typically ineffective. The lack of reliable, up-to-date informal housing information and maps in most local organizations poses a problem in decision making. Therefore, preventive measures to minimize the burden are more practical than elimination. Identifying the current and future informal housing will help us plan better and reduce the burden on the economy. The research will study the various paraments for the location preference for forming lower-income housing (Informal housing) through literature and validating the relationship through Geographical Weighted Regression (GWR). This study aims to identify and map current informal housings and predict the more prone location to the formation of informal housings in Pune city through GIS and CA Markov Chain modeling. The study will help urban planners and policymakers proactively address the issue by integrating the Model with the master plan preparation and framework for better sustainable urban planning. Pune is one of the growing metro cities in India, attracting lakhs of the population in search of job opportunities. Economic expansion leads to a large amount of in migration from surrounding regions. Most migrants belong to the lower strata and cannot enter the formal housing market. These lead to 40% of the Pune city population living in informal settlements (Slums). The study identifies the local factors for the location choice of lower-income housing and predicts the suitable location using the GIS and CA-Markov chain model.     Effect of Road Classification and Land Use on NMT User Safety

    According to the World Health Organization, accidents are the eighth major cause of mortality and the first leading cause of death among children aged 5- 14 and individuals aged 15-29. Pedestrians, bikers, and motorcyclists account for 54% of all accident-related deaths worldwide. In India, the number of pedestrians killed in road accidents has increased from 22,656, in 2018 to 25,858 in, 2019. Pedestrian accounted 17 % of the total road accident deaths whereas cyclists accounted for 3 % of fatalities from road accidents. The leading three crime vehicles in terms of share of pedestrians killed are two wheelers (26.8%), cars, taxis, vans, & LMV (25%) and trucks & lorries. In Chandigarh 4.57 people per lac population died due to road accident in 2020 in which NMT users were the second most impacted group after two wheelers. The road crash severity (NMT) score of the city is 41 percent (2020). The purpose of this study is to understand traffic safety condition in Chandigarh city and analyse accident trends of NMT users in the city. Furthermore, to analyse severely impacted areas with respect to parameters for safety of NMT users. Emphasis will be on two questions: 1. Which form of urban road classification are more prone to accidents of pedestrian and NMT users; and 2. How nearby land use impact safety of NMT users

    Vending is an essential part of urban life. It provides for both the consumer and the vendor by fulfilling the needs of the population and providing jobs. Before the formulation of National Policy on Urban Street Vendors in 2004, vending activity was seen as an eye sore. But with the policy release and the verdict of Supreme Court in a 1989 case: Public spaces go beyond the typical definition of being an open space. They reflect the diversity and vibrancy of the urban fabric and hold the power to create memories. Among all public spaces, streets emerge as the most public. Streets are engines of economic activities, social hubs, and platforms for civic engagement. They break socio-economic divides and foster social cohesion. Planning, designing, and managing better public spaces have become important global discussions. Sustainable Development Goals (8 and 11) and the New Urban Agenda emphasize the significance of inclusive and sustainable economy and safe, accessible and quality public spaces for all. “If appropriately controlled in accordance with the exigencies of the situation, sidewalk vendors may significantly contribute to the comfortability of the general public by offering everyday items at substantially lower prices. In a rush to go home at the end of the day, a person of modest means can pick up these items without having to go out of his way to reach a normal market. The right provided in Article 19 (1) g of the Constitution to do trade on the footpaths, if properly controlled, cannot be rejected on the basis that streets are intended solely for passage or repassage and no other purpose." [Sodan Singh & Others versus New Delhi Municipal Council, 1989] Keeping this intention in mind the aim of the study is to investigate the problems and provide appropriate smart planning interventions to them on typology basis. This paper will try to catagorised the street vendors which are prominent there and divide them into different typologies, then by analysing the site data and field survey this paper will provide a smart planning proposal and will provide smart infrastructure planning in Kolkata Newmarket
