Cities as living systems are in process of continuous evolution-negotiating with their past and present in pursuit of satisfying contemporary needs and aspirations. Religious and cultural beliefs defining traditional Indian communities, through their cultural manifestation in the city spaces over the years have given cities their distinct identities. The three concepts of ritual, identity, and heritage are the core topics of this thesis. Here, ritual is interpreted as a part of tradition or as a means of passing on heritage. Identity is viewed primarily as the outcome of heritage. Heritage is therefore the most important element of the triangle since it is via the heritagization of ritual that modern value is assigned. Heritage also plays a significant role in the identification process, which is how people form their personal, group, and place identities. Bargarh Dhanuyatra case is taken into consideration to ground the theoretical findings

This architectural thesis investigates the design of a mixed-use high-rise skyscraper situated in the vibrant neighbourhood of Mumbai Marine Lines. The project aims to create a dynamic urban landmark that seamlessly integrates three distinct functions: offices, residences, and a luxurious 5-star hotel. The design approach is centred around careful consideration of spacial arrangement, vertical zoning, circulation, and core arrangement to optimize functionality, accessibility, and aesthetic appeal. Special attention is given to the incorporation of green spaces throughout the building, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between nature and the urban environment. The thesis explores innovative strategies for vertical zoning, organizing the various functions within the building to enhance efficiency and user experience. The arrangement of office spaces, residential units, and hotel facilities is strategically planned to promote a sense of community, while providing privacy and exclusivity as required. Sustainability is a key aspect of the project, and the design incorporates cutting edge building automation systems and energy-efficient technologies to minimize environmental impact. The thesis investigates the integration of renewable energy sources and explores strategies for reducing energy consumption and waste production. The project emphasizes the creation of luxurious spaces by incorporating premium amenities, high-quality materials, and innovative interior designs. These elements are meticulously tailored to cater to the needs and aspirations of discerning occupants, ensuring a superior living, working, and hospitality experience. Through in-depth research, design exploration, and critical analysis, this thesis aims to present a comprehensive architectural solution that combines functionality, sustainability, and luxury in a high-rise skyscraper. By addressing the challenges and opportunities inherent in urban development, this project contributes to the discourse on innovative architectural design in dense urban environments, particularly in Mumbai Marine Lines

a case of Sri Lankan refugees

Refugee camps are the settlements formed by the refugees after they flee from their home country to a host country to seek refuge. These can be temporary and permanent based on the reason for their arrival. Around 132 countries provide protection and assistance for refugees. Refugee camps are probable to affect the host cities economically, spatially, demographically and culturally which often leads to population influx, vegetation degradation, overcrowding in public places and security concerns for the local residents. Notably, India is not a signatory to the UN Refugee convention. Spatial planners can crucially avoid such situations by providing exclusivity to situations as such. Sri Lankan refugees who fled to India in 1983 to seek refuge after the violence arose during the civil war for a separate Tamil state. Over three decades, Sri Lankan refugees have been living in Tamil Nadu in 117 government-run camps and maintenance of these camps are funded by the Tamil Nadu state government. Largest being the Mandapam camp, Rameswaram is the transit camp for refugees after being deported from Sri Lanka. The second largest camp, Gummidipoondi, is located near the Pulicat Lake in the Tiruvallur district. Situated in the suburbs of Chennai, near an industrial area along the highway, Gummidipoondi is selected as the study area due to its location, scale, and presence of overcrowded settlements. This study aims to understand the housing patterns, economic status, and camp infrastructure, differentiating them from normal neighbourhoods. Field visit was conducted to study the dynamics of the site and household survey method to understand the perspective of a refugee living in the camps. Residents of the camp mentioned many concerns regarding the camp and obstacles of their daily lives like not being able to reach their workplaces, women and children stopping their education and work due to inevitable security conditions and vendors traveling back-n-forth daily to sell the goods and residents of the camp are not accessible to the basic goods. Analysis of the gathered information reveals that this refugee camp faces numerous challenges, with solutions lying at polar opposite ends of the spectrum. Here we provide the space and opportunity for them to live and contribute to the state government by procuring the functional spaces for them to sell and create. Another major concern in this refugee camp is overcrowding and non-functioning common toilets. To avoid that, this thesis proposes the zonal development with standardized spaces for the services and a cluster plan in which four families share a courtyard, common toilets and a space for domestic animals/ fishing equipment. This thesis proposes the redevelopment using the low-income housing standards in India referring URDPFI, Tamil Nadu building bye laws and National Building code 2005. This thesis anticipates providing refugees a secure environment where one can live with the dignity as a refugee and sustainable living conditions by crafting the land to a productive use for the long-term condition

Urban planning is a method that allows for the management of changes in a spatial context. It involves a holistic approach to planning activities, considering economic, environmental, and social goals. The planning process typically involves studying past trends and developing proposals for the future. The Ganges River basin is a large alluvial plain that covers an area of 1.1 million square kilometers and is home to over one-quarter of India's population of more than one billion people. The river has facilitated the development of various forms of human habitation, including densely populated cities, small towns, industrial areas, sacred sites, mountains, and forests. The interface that exists between the man-made interventions and the river is unique and consisting of many layers. The term "pilgrim" has been used for centuries to describe those who embark on a journey to visit sacred sites or perform religious rites. The act of pilgrimage is often seen as a transformative experience that allows individuals to connect with their faith, renew their beliefs, and gain a deeper understanding of their spiritual identity. Pilgrims often embark on long and arduous journeys, facing physical and mental challenges along the way, which are believed to purify the soul and deepen their connection to the divine. Prayagraj is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The city is located at the confluence of three sacred rivers, the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati, making it a highly revered and holy site. The city has been associated with religious beliefs and practices for thousands of years. Millions of pilgrims from all over the world visit the city during this time to take a holy dip in the sacred rivers. The most significant of these is the Sangam, the point where the three sacred rivers meet. It is believed that taking a dip in the Sangam during auspicious times can wash away one's sins and grant them spiritual liberation. To comprehensively understand and address the challenges associated with managing the movement of pilgrims, the study will be carried out using a multipronged approach. The first step involves mapping the footfall of pilgrims across the ghats in the study area, to know the footfall of all ghats and based on footfall finalizing ghats based on footfall. The second step will be to identify the issues and 6 Planning for Pilgrim Movement: A Case of Prayagraj City challenges that currently exist with the existing pilgrim movement, such as overcrowding, traffic congestion and accident rate. Finally, based on the findings of the first two steps, the study will propose planning interventions based on two analysis methods, network analysis and space syntax analysis to facilitate the movement of pilgrims
